Reality of the world is the smaller sites have no scale. Therefore they need a larger cut to make it viable. Then, when the site gets bigger, it still needs a larger cut because its overheads are high. The site - once established - then makes a decision whether to cut its costs, pass on a slice to the artist, or simply make more money.

0 sales. At one point I would have loved to know the number of views, but I realise they would only be my own views.

I would probably blow most of it on beer and food.

How much is the photographers share from Fotosearch? I am having micro sales from them, but I see my photos for sale there from $99?

I just recorded another $20 sale with them. So far this 3 months has earned me the same $ as the past 2 years.

I deleted most of my FT portfolio. I am hooked up to get an email each sale. It seemed I got far more emails than the $ counter on the site indicated.

-Their only credible resource has announced she's leaving.
-It's impossible to upload there using any FTP software.
#1 I never considered her credible. #2 I use Filezilla and it works. My $ per sale has gone up up up in the last 3 months, but the numbers are down. In the end I am about 5% up on sales.

I guess most of us face the same issues working alone in micro. You get down in the mouth from rejections, sales are down, you run dry of ideas, and consider throwing in the towel.
So what do you people do to keep your chin up?

As Tan said, use public domain stuff. Alternatively do this. Use the Photoshop sheet music symbols. Go to an online sheet music generator and just make some music ... eg, http://www.p22.com/musicfont/

My good food shots sell, my ordinary ones do not.
To take a good food shot takes a lot of practice.
There are heaps of speciality enthusiasts on flickr who give great advice.

My January / February sales are close to the previous 12 months total.

I did that as well Nikon. But I just wondered if there was any benefit in them having a small customer base themselves.

I was wondering if anyone had success using PhotoShelter as their ecommerce site for direct sales?
I have an idea I believe I can market direct to buyers but it is unsuitable for micro, in fact most of the agencies reject these images. All I want is an ecommerce site to sell from.
Tell me your stories please.

I just went through the same decision, after not having the $ for a new 5DmkII. I bought an older model 5D for the same price as the 50D

The important thing to recognise is all of the opinions are just that ... opinions.
You say, I say, he says ... all just opinions. While it is not illegal, sellers have every right to do this. And unless there is a Code of Conduct somewhere that we all have voluntarily signed, it is not unethical or immoral.

If you go to all the hassle of getting a property release, you are wasting your effort selling them via micro. There are plenty of big end photo sites where the return is worth the effort.

Alien Bees are hopeless for Australia. They require you to call them in the USA and their kits are built for low voltage.
I have a set, and they are not as good as this cheap set.
