Pond5 / Re: Pond 5 review changes
« on: May 02, 2016, 06:07 »

So, they are not opened to any new SFX submissions but they say that " are many opportunities to provide content that will compliment their existing collection. Among other things, were working on a new artists newsletter where well be communicating needs on a regular basis"... I'm definitely going to Envato with my sounds. And they are "working on a new artist newsletter"??? Working? You need a team of 20 people and six months timeframe to work on a newsletter to communicate needs? As far as I'm concerned Pond5's only need is a slap in the face. I know it sounds like Im insulted and hurt (and I am to a point) but this is 90% money related! I gave up my exclusivity (again) with Pond5 in mind as a second/first earning agency for my audio library. If they WROTE ANYWHERE on their submission page, first page, newsletter etc, that they are not accepting NEW SOUND FILES OTHER THAN SONGS AND MUSIC my decision regarding non-exclusivity would be different. Like this I'm stranded (I think that the word) to a degree.
....

AND that's the main problem here! You nailed it!

Yes that's right. I did have the courtesy of an exchange of e mails with Javier Salinas who seems to be somebody at Pond 5 with a brain and it seemed encouraging. I did give them a second go and I think I've been fair about it.

The only logical question would be what Javier said about rejection issue, if you contacted him at all?

They are still paying out 50%, the fastest way to increase their earnings is to cut royalties.

So I do think fair trade was part of the concept.

Of course the owners make money, why else would they run a business.

Well, as I said long ago...not much fun in 50% if no sales. Nice PR though.

No offense to anyone here but many have rather naive outlook of new/old management.
Both just wanted $$$$, not the revolution in fair play sharing profit. Old folks got it and vanish into better life, the new one will get $$$ somehow or move to another gig.   8)
p.s. Who really knows what new management inherited from the old one, what kind of issues and problems to scale the business further.

Official reply just in today:

Hey folks! Not sure if I posted in this thread yet. I can confirm that the curators are tightening their acceptance parameters as we grow and evolve. Some pieces of advice from us:

1. Look at the clips from your own batch that were accepted, and use that as a guide for what we are looking for from you.
2. If you feel clips were mistakenly or wrongly rejected, please do write in to [email protected] with the clip IDs and why you think there may have been a mistake. We can run them by the curators for a second look. Please be aware that sometimes the decision is final, and each time we send clips for a second review, the queue becomes longer.
3. We realise frustrating things happen when acceptance patameters change. That's why our curation leads are working on a comprehensive guide to add to our Artist Resources - this will be an anvaluable resource and something to help you consider what exactly we're looking for when we curate.

I hope this helps! Please be assured, we value you guys and we want everyone to do well, from the jack of all trades artists to the b roll folks, to the full time stock shot professionals. Building a strong, high quality marketplace with things that are likely to sell will help us all do better.

I called Paypal, they told me they would wait for a reaction by Pond5 on this before releasing the money..

Good luck with waiting for a reaction by P5!  8)

From which country they are paying us?
Ireland, Swiss, Czech or US? That's where P5 have been registered as a company so maybe they've changed address and now need a verification of some sort, which takes time.  :-\

Pond5 / Re: Is setting 80$ for a 4k video is too high?
« on: April 16, 2016, 03:08 »
The fact that someone is even posting this question is 100% Pond5's fault.

I posted this last year, and while I haven't checked recently I suspect it hasn't changed by much. This is what P5 shows contributors when they go to set the price of an upload:

HD clips: $43.60 (all), $59.80 (best-selling)
4K clips: $50.30 (all), $80.30 (best-selling)

Another sales report was due just over 2 hours ago and it seems this one hasn't come through either. I and other artists have email support... again.

What makes this personally frustrating is after train wreck start to year sales appeared to be really taking off in the right direction and ATCs ("add to carts" where you can track which clips have been added to customers' cart) over the last 4 days have been best in years. So yes I'm particularly keen to see if these ATCs have converted to sales but of course everything's messed up right now.

I still have faith in the company but these glitches and corresponding lack of communication is frustrating - I hope it gets resolved ASAP, especially with Payday tonight / tomorrow.

After 10 years of existence they just announced hiring for Head of Customer Service...so be patient with your requests. You will get an answer...eventually.   :o

Love it! They blame each other depts. Btw, P5 CTO is gone...so how about blaming HR for not replacing him to organize sales report.   ::)

Not good, these are small departments too not departments with hundred people, a "team" there is probably 2-3 people at most and answers should be immediate. Something tells me you are on to something, they are going around in circles blaming each other and occasionally giving the customer/supplier/us the middle finger.

Could not be all attitude directed at us though, could be intense unhappiness within the company, employees may not be happy, not like the new leadership for all we know and it's basically work to rule.  I have seen that before in a workplace, everyone just dumbed down, worked to rule and eventually the company went bankrupt but was bought by different owners.

As I said long ago, circus artists can NOT fit in corporate environment that is on now. If founders thought that getting $61mill is just that, they were dead wrong. Even them got replaced (although, let's not worry about their bank accts). You gotta perform or you OUT. And that's what they do now, new leadership is bringing new employees and it will take time to make ops smooth.
And guess who is gonna suffer most?   :-\

You nailed it on that one!  like any startup, the day you take delivery of VC funding is the day the party is over and you start working for not the customers but the investors and VC's will bleed the company dry, they aren't in it for the long haul and to make a family business out of it and that's just the way it works.

There may also be an issue of lack of certain skills in the workplace that the new managers are expecting to see so I would not doubt there will be some front line personnel changes.

The question is will Pond5 be able to come back as a top seller for us?  these days if you lose traction it's near impossible to come back into favor with the customer and one only has to read the story of Blackberry to what happened there and to this day no matter what they do and come out with the customer isn't even looking, the name has been tarnished.

I don't think they are rushing to become bestsellers anymore. It's more like acquisition they are craving...
My craziest prediction is that Google might buy them out in the end, which for sure P5 would love. That's why that VP guy from Google got on board to fix them up in a way that Google needs them.
Time will tell.  8)

It's up the spout - no sales have been reported site-wide for 3 days which is very annoying. I and others have badgered support and also posted in the forums, hopefully this gets resolved ASAP since Payday is tomorrow.

And what did they say? "Oh so sorry we've been busy crop dusting around our new swanky office on Park Ave."   >:(

They said IT's on the case but that was over 24hrs ago and another scheduled sales report has gone by without being released.

CTO and founder no 2 is gone too....WOW!
Anyone left there?

I am fearful that they are following the path of Fotolia and Canva....taking revenge on contributors who question their new model/methods.  Ever since I had an email exchange (stern, factual but clean and legit) with them where I pointed out clear inspection shenanigans on their part, in fact showing them a search term from a set of my submissions, ZERO results come up on P5, so why were my videos in that batch fully rejected when there were no "oversupplied clips?" The response was too bad, all rejected.  I responded back to them in a nice way stating that they are destroying a good model and that the value for P5 was really in good curation, keywords and pricing floors, not destroying a model that is working. Then I linked them to one of the P5 threads here, never heard back from them. But haven't had a sale since, either. That was about 5-6 weeks ago. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not. I have about 900 clips and 3,000 photos there.

They hate MSG because here we fully call out their nonsense and PR bs.
But for sure they follow what's been said here.  8)

In other words, if he's successfully sued, they know where to look for money. So in a way, it's a good sign.

Well, not much money there...he has only 40-ish followers. :-/

The soundproof production room is probably a dark interior office space with cubicles, which are the "editing bays." The mix of personal and group spaces are the long desks everyone sits at ("personal") and the small conference rooms on the periphery ("group"). The whiteboards and cork walls are most likely in the conference rooms. Pretty standard office stuff. Then they have some TV monitors mounted here and there with a loop of videos running.

It's the copywriter's job to make that sound Fabulous with a capital F. I'll tell you our amazing new cat litter has super effective "odor destroyers" that will transform your life, and the R&D guy will tell you they sprayed the clay with lots of perfume. (True story.)

Ha ha...well said! Is there anyone out there who actually buys into PR bs anymore?

p.s. This is a jolly good read for anyone having any illusions on startups these days...
