Assuming you haven't changed the theme, then the upgrade is quite safe and easy.
You download the zip file from the Symbiostock.com site and save it on your disc. You go to Themes in the wordpress admin area and activate one of the standard WP themes. Then you delete the Symbiostock theme. Go to install new theme by upload, select the zip file and upload it. Finally, activate it. I can't recall exactly which build needed this final step, but there is no harm in activating the standard WP theme again, then activating Symbio again just in case that step was needed.
What everyone else then does is activate their child theme, which is simply a place to put modications to the appearance of the site.

I think we are misleading you with a wrong assumption. These responses assumed that you have changed some of the files in the theme in order to change its look or format. If you havent done that - and very few people have - then the upgrade to another release doesn't impact all our work on photographs.
Have you altered any of the core files of the theme - ie modified the code?

It isn't when you search on just Bengal Cat. How many would search using the word lonesome with bengal cat? Just wondering... I think this game is all about getting those relatively rare searches. I come up number one with "Bengal cat licking lips" which you might search if you wanted an image for a pet food advert. I hope a stock buyer has something a bit more specific in mind than "bengal cat" when they do a google search, although I am on the first page for "bengal cat stock photo". The chance of getting to number one on generic phrases is pretty low, but when someone has a real use in mind, those are the searches we need to "ace!" Steve

Hi - although I submit video to a couple of the stock agencies, I am no expert in stock footage, but I have been talking with Kevin (from Denmark) who is interning with a video production company, has been looking at agencies as a potential buyer and is trying to understand how the various stock agencies appear to the contributors. He is new to this forum and so I volunteered to help create the survey, and position it with the members of the forum. Here is his explanation: This is a questionnaire made in conjunction with a study internship, and also pure interest. The goal is to get an overview of what is actually important for stock footage contributors, and how the different sites are positioned within certain criterias. The data generated during this questionnaire will be publicly available via Google Survey. At the end of the survey you will get a link to the results and I will also post them here. The questionnaire will be online until 25th of August. At the end of August the data will be refined into graphs and again shared. Here is the link to the survey on Google Docs: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1dINf3xE3DmWSArXGozHs6svhvM8vy2I19tzhW151Zvc/viewformThe survey should only take five minutes or so - please complete it if you submit to stock footage sites. Yes - that was my original plan - to only put them on Alamy as RM, but as the sales there are so intermittent I decided to give them 6 months as exclusive on my own site instead. Not sure if it is entirely logical, but I put the price higher for an exclusive image on my site - thoughts about that?

It doesn't seem to make a difference to my results whether I am logged in to Google or not - they don't show my stock site as "belonging" to me. They do have a marker against my blog site that registers that one to me, though.
I still get "number one" for my lonesome bengal cat!

We are at 60k images at the moment, I am sure we are going to 100k that means we will be bigger then People Images, if we keep going maybe get to 200k images we could be bigger as Stocksy I'm at 1000 images now and only 4000 more to add! We will get there! I'm also experimenting with putting my latest "editorial" type shots exclusively on my Symbio site. These relatively specialized images won't sell well on the main micros, but should appear right at the top of any Google searches. It will be interesting to see how that goes. Steve

I have the 5D mkIII and I use the 24 - 105 f4 most of the time. I do carry a wider lens and a 70-200 f4, but this all purpose lens is the one I use for probably 70% of my images

Thanks Leo, for explaining everything so carefully.
I have set my site to "red" in the content filter and Allow unrated images to "Yes" so I should be seeing everything. I have a few images that I marked as yellow last night - if anyone that has me in their network wants to search for "Liverpool", you can test your own settings. You should see some photos of some statues on a beach near Liverpool.

Great - can you look at the formating of that page that you come to from the registration email at the same time. The layout between the "sign in" and the "registration" part of that screen is pretty messed up (at least on Chrome)

On a related note is anyone finding that they don't get all images up when searching in the All Images (Ladybird) section?
I have about 248 dogs if I search on the customer side of my site, when searching in the back end I only get 84, and three of those are dogwood not actual dogs? It does appear that the admin search of images finds any use of those letters in words - so if I search for cat, I get images that have the word "vacation" coming back in the search. I don't know if it did that before or not. It then becomes a bit hard to find if the number of "cat" images matches the ones I get on the user side of the site, so I can't directly answer your other question! steve

Just a quick question on that setting if I may. I have the "allow unrated content" set to Yes but "content filtering" set to "-"
Is that the right combination of settings for any of my own images to show up (they are mixed green, yellow and presumably no rating) and for any other images in the network to show up?

Leo
I thought some of the way those threads were worded was not very "nice" - just ignore it - the overwhelmingly large proportion of your "customers" are very happy with the work you have done!

The updates do normally show up in WP - I was on 2.5.0 and I saw that an update to 2.5.5 was available in WP Themes. It is just that this jump from where you are couldn't be done with a normal update.
I'm sure Leo just wants to freeze this and get on with something else - I think 2.5.5 is where we will be for a while

Slightly more complex CSS question. I'm running Amanda's clean theme, and on the image display/purchase screen, my descriptions of the image run straight into the author's picture and bio - with no spaces unless I force a "non breaking space" into each description of each image. As I didn't do this for the first 600 images, this is a hassle!
I would like to add a bit of padding either underneath the description display on the image page, or at the top of the author bio segment so that there is a space between the two. I can see the various Class IDs when I look at the source code, but not sure how to modify one of those to add a bit of space.
Ideas?

I've moved to 2.5.5 now - all seems well with the speed of the site and the way the search by the keyword tags works now

The themes are on Symbiostock.com - the latest is 2.5.5. From where you are, I think you need to load this one manually from the zip file. Activate one of the other themes, delete the Symbio theme, upload the new zip, activate it, then (and I can't remember is this step is needed or not) activate one of the standard themes again, then activate Symbio. Finally activate the child theme.
That double step was needed for one of the themes around the release where you are.

I find that my images (that I have properly described on the SYS site) normally appear in Google text results and in Image, even though I have the same image on most of the other stock sites. For instance "cat licking lips" shows my stock site on row two, with 123RF and Deposit Photos on row three of the image search results. I think you are right about the image search only showing one of each image though - I do have all those images on all my sites, but only one is shows.
Still - it does show that properly describing them, and having the network effect of SYS brings us to the top.

Perhaps it was related to steheap's complaint too...who knows. I think it was - I was noticing very long wait until the results of clicking on a keyword appeared, and on one occasion it came up with no results on a popular keyword, and there were no categories shown. I thought I mentioned it, but I was worried!! Steve

I'm back on 2.5.0 - speed is restored again. It could be Google, but I've never seen that before that it took a minute to load an image.
Anyway, its late and that is enough excitement for me!
Steve
PS - I had a database error trying to go back to the 2012 theme - I've never seen those before on my site. I refreshed the page and the theme loaded, but it was a worrying time.

Leo - I'm pretty concerned about the stability of my site right now - I've had about 2 database errors and the performance is really slow. Are you sure 2.5.2 is stable?
steve
I'm backing out to 2.5.0 so if you try the site, it could be strange...

« on: July 05, 2013, 21:34 »
I've just updated to 2.5.2, but the site seems incredibly slow now...
Just clicking on one of the keywords in the tag cloud takes about two minutes before anything comes up.
It could be the hosting of the site, but it seemed to be OK before I upgraded to 2.5.2. Nothing else was changed - just the new theme from 2.5.0
Steve
PS - and it didn't find anything against that tag - maybe that is that image update issue, but just moving to one of my cat images from the one on the home page takes a long time...
PPS - latest attempt to load home page got Error establishing a database connection
Worrying,,,
