Adelaide the idea is to have one image each week - you can't change yours just because you got a sale!  That's too greedy!

« on: October 01, 2007, 15:08 »
In the long run you'll be disappointed with either of those lens choices.  As you shoot more and more you'll simply become aware of the limitations and lack of quality compared to the 50mm F1.8.

What not look for a short telephoto on eBay?  Same goes for wide angle - you might be able to find a nice 28mm F2.8 for not much money.

Chode, you've got 2234 images at Fotolia, but only 240 of those have got downloads.  Clearly you've got to decide whether to leave them all at FT or submit to mutliple agencies.

If you believe the quality won't meet the standards elsewhere then of course you've got to leave them where they are.

You've got some great ideas worth shooting again once your DSLR arrives.

This is a worthwhile project.  A good way to boost some of our favourite images.  Let's hope others join in.

StockXpert.com / Quality...
« on: September 29, 2007, 17:38 »
I had a look at some of the images for sale in the Jupiter collection.  Frankly I think the overall quality and creativity isn't any better than a lot of the work submitted to the microstock agencies; in fact, I've seen much better work in microstock.

There is a post on the StockXpert forums from some disgruntled photographer who has now been rejected twice; he's furious because he gets his stuff accepted by Getty and 'owns one of the best cameras in the world'.

Some of the macro photographers are going to get a big surprise when their work is seen as inferior and gets rejected by the microstock agencies.  Owning a great camera doesn't make a great photographer.

I get the overall impression that the macro world is a bit of a 'club'.  That club is going to find that it loses control, loses income, and life is about to become much, much more difficult.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Istock poll about Exclusivity
« on: September 29, 2007, 14:10 »
When I look at successful photographers at iStock, I see most of them already exclusive.  And these exclusives have huge download numbers.  I suspect that exclusives get more than just an increase in commission - it seems that sales improve dramatically (at least for some).

However my main concern is the 'all eggs in one basket' problem.  Of course this hasn't been a problem for Lise or Hidesy or Sean Locke, all of whom have flourished there.  Nonetheless, the technical difficulties seen over the last few weeks must have worried some exclusives.  What if IS has a serious problem like Fotolia with V2?  I recall Phildate's comments about his huge loss of income from Fotolia.

It's a difficult choice.  On the one hand it might be a very successful and satisfying move.  On the other hand it could be equivalent to having one's entire life savings in Enron stock.....

Okay I'll play.  Yours is a simple, effective and useful image for design, so I've left a comment and given it a 10 rating.

Here's my image:

Glad it's not just me....!

No - the seven keyword thing also applied under V1.

The fact of the matter is that, at FT, if you do not order your keywords correctly (when uploading the image) you are wasting your time.

This is why I've always commented on the considerable amount of time it takes me to upload to FT - sorting the keywords using their rather slow sort list thing is very time consuming.

But my sales there are very good, so investing the time is worth it.

I don't think they will expand beyond the seven word thing for some considerable time (if ever).

StockXpert.com / Re: Subscription Coming Soon to StockXpert
« on: September 29, 2007, 03:07 »
Yes, I've opted out of all subscriptions at Snapvillage. In addition I've priced all my images at $10.  I spend a considerable amount of time making my pictures as perfect as possible, and of course that implies that the perfection MUST apply to maximum size; hence pricing all images for maximum size makes sense.

Thankfully I don't get that many subscription sales at DT.  But I've just looked at the last ten sales and I'm astonished and disappointed to see 2 Medium, 2 Large and 6 Maximum.  None of the sales are small.

25c is simply too low.  SS increased theirs to 30c earlier this year (and hopefully will make a further increase next year);  123RF have fixed theirs at 36c;  Dreamstime is the odd one out and shouldn't be letting our hard work go for a credit to us of 25c.

I don't have a problem with subscription sales, so long as there is a volume customer base and the payment to contributors is realistic and fair.  I can understand why most people here feel that 25c is a slap in the face.

StockXpert can do better than this.

It seems to me that StockXpert have done everything pretty well so far - given the size of their library, they appear to have a very high customer/image ratio (far higher than say DT or BigStock) and I get encouraging results.

StockXpert were also not tempted to build the library with any old rubbish; they've been selective right from the start, and this builds confidence in customers.  They have a tightly run contributor list of only 3,400 photographers, compared to 17,000 at DT and 36,000 at IS.

Also, through Steve, StockXpert have tried to give good communication - how often do we see anyone in authority from FT or BigStock posting here?

Now Steve says that StockXpert's reseach shows that subscriptions will INCREASE the customer base, resulting in increased sales for us all.  Given what I've seen so far, I am inclined to trust StockXpert's judgement, unless and until proven otherwise.  I don't think this is a way to 'screw' photographers at all - StockXpert will need to run the subscription model in an efficient way in order for it to make profits, and that means it will need volumes of customers to dilute maximum download risk.

However I agree that 25c is disappointing and will need to be higher if StockXpert wants to use this to attract quality images.

Despite my misgivings about SV, I'm given confidence by seeing Ron and his team upload there; I don't believe the Iofoto 'machine' would support a venture unless they believed in long term economic rewards.

So I've been uploading gradually over the last few days.  Pleased to see some improvements to the site since I last uploaded weeks ago, but the thing is still very unstable; it doesn't seem to 'like' uploads of the maximum of five images and always times out, but when I reduce the number to three or four at a time it seems to work okay.

I'm not a world leading brand like Iofoto (!) so I am pricing everything at $10 for the moment.  I don't want to undercut the existing agencies who have served me so well over the last few months, and besides - we all want prices to rise rather than fall.

iStockPhoto.com / Reduced upload limits...
« on: September 26, 2007, 17:31 »
Uploads are suspended at the moment, as most people know.

However I notice that the upload limit has been reduced: my limit as a bronze now shows 15/168.  This is the lowest upload limit since I joined iStock, and presumably has something to do with trying to reduce activity on the site while they sort out the technical stuff.

Presumably there will be an announcement about reduced upload limits in due course.

Or they are holding us while they are been buyed by Getty?

Actually, that's not so daft as some peeps might think.....

I was just wondering this morning that the situation at StockXpert has been 'allowed' to go on for quite a long time; a surprising amount of time actually; it occured to me this morning that I would delay recruiting new people if I was involved in potential corporate action, such as buying a competitor.  We'll just have to wait and see.
