General Stock Discussion / Re: Oh Canada
« on: September 20, 2007, 15:33 »
Talking of inflation, the Zimbabwe situation is why Greenspan has warned this week of possible double digit interest rates in the years ahead.  Currency devaluation risks importing inflation, particularly in a country like the US which has a huge trade imbalance.  Think about it - if the USD drops 10% suddenly all the foreign goods in the shops cost 10% more......and if that gets out of control..........

US friends can expect mortgage rates of 9%, 11% or higher sometime in the next three or four years.  What that will do to the housing market doesn't bear thinking about, given its already fragile state.

Not good.

USD is simply going through a long term gradual devaluation in order to correct trade and budget imbalances.  Better that it is gradual and controlled than a sudden drop which would cause panic and loss of confidence.

This has been happening for a long time.  In 1954 one USD bought 6,000 JPY (Japanese Yen).  Today that same dollar buys only 140 JPY........

The same thing will happen to the Chinese Yuan, which will probably appreciate at an average rate of 15% per annum compound for at least the next 20 years.

Just think yourselves lucky you are not in Zimbabwe, where the local currency has fallen 98% against the US Dollar over the last two years.  A local bottle of milk now costs $50 instead of $1.  Mind you, Zimbabwe does have a monthly inflation rate of 2,000% (which is what happens when currencies suddenly collapse).

Happy days..........

iStockPhoto.com / Getty image sizes
« on: September 20, 2007, 02:49 »
Someone on the forums at iStock has pointed out that Getty have announced an increased minimum image size of 10mp.

I'm convinced that it makes sense to create images at the largest possible size, because with the rapid changes in technology who knows how soon the microstock agencies will have minimum sizes of 8mp or 10mp or 12mp...........

It doesn't affect existing images already up for sale of course, but imagine if you have a large collection all taken at 8mp and a new agency comes along in a couple of years and specifies 10mp minimum.....

This announcement doesn't affect iStock (yet).

For me, iStock generates increasing sales as my portfolio grows.

I blow hot and cold over the exclusive thing - one week I'll be all for it, then something will happen and I'll thank my lucky stars that I don't have all my eggs in one basket.

I've been watching the news back in the UK of the queues and queues of people all lining up round the block and waiting patiently for hours to withdraw their life savings from Northern Rock Bank in case it goes bust.  Eggs and baskets came to mind.

Then I think to myself 'what if IS were to have a V2?' and I recall Phildate's comments about how he though Fotolia 'could do no wrong'.

Congrats Whiz.  Now get uploading.  But not all at once.  A steady stream of new uploads to SS is the way to sustain momentum.

Depends on price, I suppose.

I don't intend to do anything about SV.  I think marketing and sales are probably months away yet.  I'll consider uploading when and if I see some serious effort at building a business.

BTW, I notice that Iofoto has 1,000 images online, which is a vote of confidence from him.

You are of course correct sharpshot.  I hadn't noticed that before.  Yes, perhaps it's just because SV's are larger that I noticed it.

I've just posted this on the SV blog:

"Unfortunately when I view my portfolio, the watermark doesnt appear on the small size images. These images can still be stolen. Although the right click save as has been disabled, all I have to do is mail this image and hey presto.

Im afraid I shant be uploading any pictures to Snapvillage other than my initial test images which will now be deleted.

It seems that Snapvillage simply doesnt understand the need for security - I have invested a considerable amount of time, money and effort in creating my images, and I am not going to trust them to an organisation that doesnt understand the need to protect them."

By sheer coincidence, I have just been reading this on the SS forums:

"I just wanted to let you know that Corbis are giving all their photos away for free, if you sign up. When I say free, I mean web size photos.
I visited a web design firm today in Delhi, India and was asking what companies they use for getting photos. When they mentioned Corbis, I thought how could an Indian design firm afford Corbis photos. Then he just showed me how he logged in and could access all web size images for free. I was horrified!!"

Hmmm.... 88.8....... is that some sort of Fibonacci thingy...?

Personally I wouldn't submit any of those to any agency because of the selective focus.  You've used F5.6 on the last one and you need to be stopping way, way down beyond that.

You might find that they can get accepted.  But buyers will be put off by the lack of overall sharpness.  In the world of art, selective focus is great, but in the world of stock images everything needs to be sharp.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Isolations at iStock
« on: September 14, 2007, 18:19 »
Just trying to be helpful, modellocate, but there is a difference between what gets accepted at iStock and what actually sells.  If you look at TomBoy's portfolio, she's achieved over 3,000 downloads with a tight, clean portfolio with nice crisp white backgrounds.  Your own portfolio has not yet achieved 10% of those downloads.  So by all means submit stuff with coloured backgrounds, but the evidence is that 'white sells'.

I had a quick look at your portfolio.  You're clearly very creative.  I like your 'moody' girls and nudes.  But once again there is a difference between what is pleasing to your eye and what buyers actually want to buy.  Moody nudes in withdrawn light simply don't sell.  They might be great artistic photographs, but they don't sell as stock images.

Girls and nudes do sell of course.  But it's the bright, clean, happy, carefree, lifestyle stuff that sells, not the moody stuff.  You're up against stiff competition from some wonderful photographers.  Perhaps the best of them is dolgachov, whose crisp, striking images I admire very much.  Apparently across multiple agencies he sells 10,000 copies a month.  You can see his stuff here:

Leaf, I wonder if future lightboxes should look further forward; I think it's too late in October to be making up Christmas and Halloween lightboxes.  I shot my Christmas stuff in July and last week I was doing Valentine's day.

Also, lightboxes that are not 'seasonal' would attract regular views throughout the year.

Very nice clear pictures.  I see no reason why you should be concerned about having to reduce the size.  Note that if you do, the resultant images must be at least 4mp.

If I was being ultra critical (and SS might be), I'd say this:

Your coin might be rejected for flat lighting and possible incorrect white balance (needs more contrast).

The plane might be rejected for poor lighting (too many deep shadows on the plane itself).

In the hand and currency shot there is evidence of noise on the thumb.

The box with days and pills might be rejected as 'not commercial'.  Very difficult to see the point of this shot at thumbnail size.

The mobile phone is covered in dust spots and needs to be cleaned.  Note also that a designer buying this shot will be very disappointed to find the near and far edges out of focus.  It's difficult shooting these Motorolas because of their length, howeber if you place a couple of coins or something under the hinge to tip the phone unit slightly towards the camera you'll bring the rear edges into focus at F32 or preferably F64 (if you have it on your lens).

But I am being very picky.  IMO once you have been accepted at SS a batch of shots like this will sail through the approval procedure (apart from perhaps the coin and plane).  Overall, nice clean, clear pictures.

Hope this helps.

StockXpert.com / Sept already a BME....
« on: September 14, 2007, 00:39 »
Only a couple of weeks into September and it's already a new BME for me at StockXpert.  Sales have taken quite a determined spurt upwards.  StockXpert do seem very serious about promotions and advertising, and building a serious business.  Well done to Steve and his team.

I hope everyone else here is enjoying rapidly increasing sales at StockXpert.

Well done sharply.  And naturally I'm pleased to see one of my pictures in there.

BigStock have been making gradual changes here and there.  And it's good to see them refining the web site.

But what they need to do is to spend some money on advertising and promotion in order to generate CUSTOMERS.  They can have the best, most functional web site in the world, but without customers it's just a waste of time and effort.

Let's hope that now the summer lull is over, BigStock have some serious marketing plans up their sleeves.

Quite right HSI - one of my best friends back in England is a black Nigerian.  He's as honest as the day is long.  Carved a career in the City of London, and from humble beginnings now owns a very nice house and earns a fortune.  Not all Nigerians are the same.

796
You are of course quite correct - I don't know you.  Neither do any of the microstock agencies.  You could be the Queen's brother, a Nigerian con-artist or even the mad axe murderer from Tunbridge Wells.

That is why you should WELCOME any requirement from professional stock agencies that applicants provide detailed and sufficient identification.

Your original post made no mention of being concerned about internet or identity theft; it simply asked how you could join some photo agencies without providing any ID.

When people pop up from nowhere asking how to make money without being identified that is highly suspicious.

Had your original post explained that you appreciate the need to be professional when joining an agency, that you understand how they need to be wary, but that you are worried about wiring your personal details over a potentially unsafe medium ...  well that would have been a different kettle of fish.

But your post didn't say that, which is why you got the reaction from me.

I am not elitist; I welcome all to the microstock industry and, as you will see from my many posts here, I try to be helpful to everyone, newbie or oldie.  We are in an exciting club, and there is space for talented and creative people.  But NOT for Nigerians, and not even for the Queen's brother unless he can prove it.

797
Let me see if I understand you correctly....

You want to submit photographs to professional image agencies who spend millions of dollars every year developing their businesses, promoting and marketing to professional design agencies worldwide and giving you the opportunity to earn tens, hundreds or perhaps thousands of dollars....

.... and yet you are not prepared to give them any form of ID?

Then what I suggest you do instead is go out and buy a wig, a false beard and a pair of dark glasses, make up a few prints and try to sell them on a street corner.

No offence, but our industry doesn't need people like you.

Many others, including you, have been around for much longer.

If you took the introductory offer, Karimala, aren't you now stuck with them for 400 days...?

I must say that I am not tempted at all by any of these new agencies.  I simply cannot see how on earth they are going to be able to generate the sales traffic.  Why would a client sign up for Albumo (who have 200,000 images) when they can join another agency with 2 million images?  I'd rather spend my time trying to refine and improve my portfolios at IS, SS, StockXpert etc.

Of the 'smaller' agencies I see StockXpert and 123RF as being an opportunity.  I suspect this is because they are part of larger organisations.

After my forst year in microstock I will 'cull' the worst performer of the six agencies I submit to; at the moment BigStock is the clear front runner for the cull........ Not that they offer bad service or anything, simply that they cannot generate the sales traffic I obtain elsewhere.
