iStockPhoto.com / Re: Extrapolating Redeemed Credits
« on: September 25, 2010, 19:23 »
Interesting charts.  And very helpful.  Thanks for posting those.

Comparing Indy diamond to EX diamond, it looks like if a hypothetical independent makes $37, 863 then at the same level they would make $79,500 as exclusive.  Am I reading that right?

If so, that would mean they would only make 211% of their independent Istock income if they were to go exclusive, assuming their sales levels stayed the same.  So double their income, plus 11%.

As an independent diamond who makes 40% of my income from Istock, double that plus 11% still leaves me 9% short of my total income as an independent.

Am I doing this right?   I was under the impression that under the current royalty scheme I would make significantly more as an exclusive.  Is that a myth, or have I somehow miscalculated?

You also need to include access to Veta and increased upload quota and able to spend more time concentrating on shooting and improving Istock portfolio. These are all hard to quantify which makes the decision for exclusive harder. With Istock's recent behaviour I'd be surprised if many people are considering going exclusive.

Bigstock.com / Re: BS login problem?
« on: September 25, 2010, 18:45 »
I've had problems uploading via html interface, you select you files and upload, goes through the motions and then just returns to the upload interface.

803
i haven't uploaded since the announcement but I haven't deleted any.

804
I've stopped uploading to them, I will make an assessment on what to do long term later. Basically I will be at 16% mark.

A small protest but something

Another move by a competitor to flush out some new blood :)

I'll give you 85% of the 3 cents per download referal.

Apparently 15% is enough

General Stock Discussion / Re: Volume of Submissions Now Reducing?
« on: September 24, 2010, 04:00 »
fantastic work, turning people to depression and making them cry, think I'll stay earning millions less in the stock world.

Why don't you make some prints of their child and threaten to shred them infront of them if they don't buy them.

Maybe hold a magnifying glass up to sun and start slowly burning a track across the print towards their qute little faces.

BTW If you use any of my ideas I want some commission. :)

imagine how many image downloads he would have in total.
Well done

Veer / Re: The Veer Puzzle
« on: September 19, 2010, 01:10 »
There are a lot of people that probably submit to the top 6 plus veer (because they were going to be the next best thing, backing of corbis and all that.)

This would slant the poll on the right towards Veer against some other the other low earners.

eg I don't contribute to crestock, deposite photo, graphic leftover and hence don't rank them

What I'm trying to say that there are less people voting for the agencies down the bottom end and hence the accuracy of the results aren't as good as the top 4.

if it results in the contributor getting screwed I guess yes.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: So what are we all going to do?
« on: September 11, 2010, 22:13 »
No one will lead because most (not all) will tuck the tail and give in like they always have.  Words are one thing, actions are another.

You can easily search the threads of the previous issues and find the near future outcome here.  One or two standing by what they say will not do anything.

iStock started paying a nickle a download, soon we will be back there again.

Yeah but they weren't charging $30 and paying out a nickle

I think you would find that Istock is making heaps of money but it has been chosen to offset reductions across the rest of the Getty business.

Having said that I don't care, you don't eye gouge the golden goose to prop up reductions in sales in other areas. 80% is already enough commission.

So seeing istocks financial statements would make me more angry in this grab for cash.

Adobe Stock / Re: Why I love Fotolia!
« on: September 11, 2010, 00:51 »
what why spruke about how good Fotolia is compared to Istock ? if Fotolia actually had any sizable number of exclusives they would have screwed them long ago. Fotolia are by far the best at screwing contributors over.

I do not believe you when you say you don't have any vested interest in Fotolia other the being a contributor.

I've stopped up loading to Istock unless they fix this mess.

i think it's all bullcrap :

microstock is a JOB, not ART !

if working as a stock photographer bring you nightmares then maybe you better find another career.

i can also tell you that shooting sport or news isn't at all artistic, and wedding photography can get boring
after shooting yet another 100th wedding.

it's a job, no more no less.

on the other side, my case is special but...

I was thinking the other day we hadn't heard in ages from "macrosaur" or any of the other helpful happy trolls that spread rainbows across our otherwise cloudy days.

On the original post, I now have a focus to keep shooting photos of different subjects, more money to spend on equipment. I still work a salary job and will for a long time yet. I have no intentions of making photography a full time job. (I'd probably starve if I did)

815
yawn  another book really this is getting me tired but anyway thanks for sharing

have there been many books on microstock before ? there are a billion blogs etc but this is only the second that I've heard of.

816
I imagine with all the people already doing some searches, sort by download, pick some contributors then sort their portfolio by downloads and then start shooting happens so much that having a couple of photos in these books would be a small % of the total impact of copying.

Anybody can easily find some photos with huge downloads and "use that as their inspiration"

They didn't have the book at my local book store and it had to be ordered in, with all the blogs, websites I don't think this will be a massive impact on my sales

Adobe Stock / Re: New prices for unsold files at FT
« on: September 01, 2010, 03:10 »
If they are going to have so many levels and rules I wish they would just adopt a system like dreamstime and have automatic image levels that are based on the individual image and not the photographer.

I agree

820
I just checked my DT statistics. This August was my BME, with RPI $1,42
Also my referral earnings there were BME.

Last year's August is my second BME. Lol, it looks like I sell most during summer slowdown.

Did you mean return per download ?

821
don't know of the quality for stock but one of the guys at my work has one on his bodyboard and has some okay shots from it printed out and hanging on his wall at his work station

just don't tell Sjlocke  ;)
The "don't dodge" rule came actually from sjlocke. I tried it out and he was right.

My poor attempt at humor didn't come off.
If you've shown that you've made a bit of an effort Sjlocke is one of the most helpful people around here and Istock forum. Hence the wink.

Photo Critique / Re: Which image would make better stock
« on: August 19, 2010, 15:58 »
If I was you I would upload both to Istock shutterstock etc but not at the same time. Just to give them a different chance in the best match game we play.

With dreamstime I would upload the best one (everyone picks B) and hold the other one back.

If you don't get many sales on it I'd send the second one in as another shot across the bows of the microstock world, maybe you might hit something.

There seems to be a bit of luck in when photos hit the newest pages whether they get sales or not.
