 Hi All,

Personally I think this person has heard all of your disappointment and disagreement with her posts. Maybe we should just let this one end. No one is getting anything of value out of it but a lot of frustration and name calling. Just my two cents.

Jonathan

Hi Pixdeluxe,

What I try to remember is there is no one way to make a living in stock. There are many paths to success that differ greatly but they can all lead to great financial reward. When we started the stock co-op www.BlendImages.com there were 23 of the top stock photographers in Macro as owners working together. One of the most interesting things I found was they were all very successful in their own stock endeavors but they all had completely different methods to their business models. More than one way to skin a cat. OHH! that's not the best Metaphor is it.

Cheers,
Jonathan

Lisa4,

My company paid $67,000 dollars to produce 3,500 Micro images, it broke down to $18.67 per image. The half I uploaded first paid for themselves ( which includes all my costs from insurance, down to toilet paper and the talent and locations and post with uploading and key wording, EVERYTHING including my meager salary ) in just under six months at 5 sites. The other half are in the process of uploading now and we have expanded to 10 sites. I hope that helps.

Jonathan

Well put Pixelbytes,

I am right there with you, this is definitely not an anti Istock site.

Sean,

I have been losing my edge since I was a kid. Maybe you could help me out.

Hi Laflor,

Thanks for the tip. I am sure there are lots of people out there that have learned from your helping. Good for you.

 Hi Stardust,

To my knowledge there isn't a Micro collection out there paying people like Yuri higher percentage for his work or making separate side deals. That is a hard secret to keep in this industry and can lead to great dissension if discovered. Just me opinion. I have seen it in Macro though.

Jonathan

Yes Laflor,

I couldn't have put it better myself.

I will second that one Zeus,

RM is still very strong if you shoot the right content and are represented by the right agencies. It is bringing in my highest RPI by a mile. I have a friend in RM that had three different images sell for $15,000 this year so far, besides all his standard income from RM and that was just at Corbis.

Hi cybernesco,

I am glad for you and your new excitement about the future there is nothing better than to wake up feeling the future looks bright. I wish you the best of luck with your sales and hope you are out from behind that desk sooner than later. Keep shooting.

Cheers,

Hi Dook,

That is a good point because I am trying to figure out why he would do all that work on such a small file for free. They are only comp size to my knowledge and Getty won't take such a small file to my knowledge, unless they do with their Flicker stuff.

Hey Gostwyck,

Thanks for the info on the shelf life of your images holding steady on their second year. I don't have that kind of data yet and I am happy to here you say that.

 Hi All,

I Had a chat with Fotolia and they can't find this photographer in their providers list so I wouldn't point a finger at Fotolia on this one. There advice was to approach Flickr with a DMCA to find out what is going on.

Best,
Jonathan

Hi Sean,

Nope! Jack is just a dear friend we are not in business together on this one. NDA's can't say anymore at this time but I will be happy to share as soon as legal is clear. The ink is drying on the paper as I type, so pretty soon. I can offer that there is no one you would know involved in this collection with the exception of myself.

Hi Marksout,

You made a very sellable image here. Much better than so much of what I see on Micro. I would take the above advice from zymmetrical and send it through again. It was probably the problem all Micro sites suffer from, poor editing. These are not professional editors looking at your work. I have had many sellable images rejected, waited a couple of weeks and sent them through again with no trouble. I think most people would say that this is a strong Micro image. Sunglasses, lose them next time for a frame or two buyers love to see the eyes.

Good Luck,
Jonathan

Hi Stardust,

I am uploading to the following 10 Micro agencies at the moment. These were chosen by the company that is doing our post on Micro uploads www.lookstat.com. They help to research the market to see where our style of work is seeing the best sales.

SS
IS
Fotolia
Dreamstime
StockXpert
VEER
123rf
Creostock
Cutcaster
Panther

I am uploading to these Macro sites as well :

Stone RM
Iconica RM
Photographers Choice RM
Getty Motion RM
Blend Images RF
Cultura Images RF
Photodisc RF
Digital Vision RF
Brand X RF
Stockbyte RF
Punchstock RF

21 sites in total now with one brand new Macro RM/RF agency coming soon.

Hi If,

Yes I think that is a good idea and I would keep it stern but professional about your concern for this issue and ask what action will be taken to not just stop this one infringer but also your concern for this taking place in the future as well. I would focus this on the individual and post him a letter and also contact Flickr. I sent Chad an e-mail as well but I don't see this as Fotolia's fault. Suggesting a better watermark is a good idea but I don't believe Fotolia is directly involved with what is taking place. Just my opinion.

Best,
Jonathan

Hi Elenathewise,

Thank you very much for pointing this out. One of my photos is also up there. There company has had this issue for ever and it is  time to try and put a stop to this flagrant misuse of copyright infringement. I have sent a letter to Flickr to share my opinion of what is taking place there and I am quite happy to pull the fangs out for this. I am also sending the photographer a copy of the letter. The next one comes from the lawyers.

Thx,
Jonathan

Hi Eric,

Actually outside of the animal thing Micro is much tighter on editing rules than Macro by far, at least that has been my experience. I have never had an image rejected from Macro for technical difficulties but I sure have in Micro.

Hi Pixelbytes,

No they will not let us Macro RF shooters join unless all our work is under only the Getty umbrella. I have my work in so many different collections it would be impossible because in Macro you sign long contracts up to 7 years to be represented. Even if I wanted to pull all my work and give it to Istock I could not.
Now Getty as well as ever agency I have ever been represented by, is very well known for change that will increase it's revenue so where we are on this rule by this time next year might be a different story. I can shoot all the Micro exclusive video I want for Istock because my motion is only represented in RM and only at Getty so that option is wide open.
If I could I still don't know if I would but Istock does show the highest RPI of all my Micro agencies. Right now I have enough images to upload my 20 a week to Istock for the next 3 years before needing to produce another frame.
My sales have shown the highest RPI at Istock but SS has made half my Micro income. It took 5-6 months to pay off the photos I have loaded in Micro at 5 agencies so in the first year I hope to see a 30% profit and I still have another 1,000 images from our original shooting to upload to all the sites and we have increased to ten sites now instead of 5. So hopefully when all is said and done I will make 3-4 times back on each image I produced over the next 3 years. That is only a theory because it is impossible to tell how long the shelf life will remain in Micro. For me so far so good, not nearly as fast a drop as I thought it might be. And thank you for the kind statement about the feather in the cap. Istock has some very strong shooters so that is a really nice compliment.
I wouldn't go as far as to say the dark side. Are you actually my father SJ, I refuse to believe it but please don't laser my hand off :D

Best,
Jonathan

Hi Tom,

We already have to get releases from the owners of dogs or horses or any pet or live stock in a Macro image. I am not sure how far they go with Micro but I remember the first time I was asked for a dog release. I said the same thing. Stick his paw in some ink and slap it on there  :D

 Hi All,

12,000 portrait images without a sale. I would love to see the work that is being mentioned just out of curiosity. Why does an agency continue to accept images if the contributor isn't making them money. If it were my agency these are the shooters I would be sending a kind " thank you but no thank you " letter to.

 Hi Eric,

The one that makes me chuckle is that you can shoot the Eiffel Tower during the day but not at night. They have copy written their lighting of the Tower at night but not the Tower itself. As stated above if one object doesn't stand out as the hero and it is just all city sky line you should be fine in commercial as well as editorial sales.

Good luck,
Jonathan
