oops, I had no idea about this feature at iS. have assigned a dozen files but will leave a dozen free spots in the hope that my summer shooting doubles my port. cheers.
You may be throwing money away = I'd suggest sorting by DLs per month and putting the top 15% in. They can be changed around after 6 months and you will also get more slots as your port grows. Top 15% sellers probably account for 85% of DLs so it makes a big difference.

Never. I only have to work out how much money I would need to save in the bank at an interest rate of 1.8%, or how many houses I would have to buy that yield a profit on capital of 6% to make what I get from stock to know that I would be crazy to drop this. It's quite instructive to value your portfolio like that.
Good point. For most, it's no replacement for the day job but something that produces a passive income even if your're not doing much at certain points.

The last 2 posts were 2 extremes of what might happen so I think that you can expect something in the middle. It will take a bit of time to get established at the new sites but your port is good and I think that you should do well everywhere making it benificial to you to go independent.

You're one of a number of DT exclusives who would obviously do well anywhere. As long as you get into SS and / or IS (and no reason you wouldn't) you should see a big increase in revenue.

The man makes many good points (at least in so far as I agree with everything he says).

Actually there are only 2 reasons to be anonymous - fear or dishonesty.
Give me a break.
There's a long tradition of anonymity on the internet, going all the way back to Usenet. Plastering the details of one's personal life all over the web is a recent thing.
It's not clear to me why anyone should be asked to explain or justify their desire for privacy and anonymity. I'd say the questions should be going in the other direction: why is someone, in this context, expecting or demanding to know who I am?
Nobody is expecting / demanding to know who anyone is or questioning anyone's right to be anonymous, nor is anyone saying fear is necessarily bad. However you dress is up, I have seen nothing here that doesn't, when brought down to essentials, fall into one of the 2 categories.

you can have well argued posts delivered anonymously but even these would be strengthened if the author is prepared to stand over Only if the point requires a signature. Opinion does not necessarily have more gravitas for being signed. References (eg to sources) and examples are what matters (as I am sure many of us learned at University).
So, I suppose you submitted your course work anonymously?? Anonymous opinion can be well argued, honest and pertinent but does not have the same gravitas. There is a reason people have to give evidence in court and not just send in an anonymous note. I would suggest though that "good" or "bad" depends on whether the reader agrees or not.
Only where the answer involves a subjective opinion. Not in a world of right and wrong answers.
Very little in this world is black or white most discourse involves subjective opinion On this particular site, the one area of opinion for which I'd have zero respect is port criticism by those in the long grass.
If someone asks for a critique it makes no difference whether the responses they get are anonymous or not. All that matters is the quality of the opinion. For the most part a well delivered critique will validate itself. The quality of a critique stands or falls on the quality of the opinion. Nothing else. Remember that the buyers are anonymous.
How can a newbie tell if an opinion is harsh but fair or something delivered by someone who gets his jollies from belittling others? If you want critique post on the SS or IS forum. I challenge anyone to provide a reason for anonymity that isnt rooted in fear or dishonesty.
I would turn that the other way. Unless an opinion requires a signature I do not see any reason why it should need to be signed.
In many cases you are likely to get more honest answers from anonymous sources.
Nobody is saying something needs to be signed, that is entirely up to the poster but the reader, equally, can draw conclusions. Being totally unaccountable for comment can certainly be an aid to honesty. I think that's what attracts a lot of people to the internet, they can be anonymous and say or do whatever they want to others without having to take responsibility for their actions or words.
IMO these sorts of anti - anonymity themes are often propagated by interests which seek or advocate greater control of the internet and greater control of opinion in general. Often in concert with lobbying on behalf of companies which want greater freedom to harvest and exploit personal information. Anti - bullying arguments are often used in this context.
In reality, much of the most acerbic, ignorant and bitter opinion I regularly see is written or read (broadcast media) by people who are more than happy to put their names to it. This does not bother me however since I was bought up to understand that:
"sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me"
^ we need to get back to that. Rather than trying to stifle opinion.
What anti anonymity theme? Started by an anonymous member with fairly balanced for and against. The argument that anonymity = freedom strikes me in the same way that the gun control = oppression argument does. I have to say I really enjoyed the plagiarism argument. Im wondering if someone could express the % probability of the increased risk of plagiarism by posting here as against having their actual work available on numerous sites with 100s of 1000s of users?

What about being business smart? I suppose that can fall into 'fear'.
Absolutely, discretion being the better part of valour and all that

My port (although small - only 600 images) will be getting deleted in the new year. With their low image credit prices, discounted credit pack prices I think they are heading the race to the bottom more so than others and dont really have the volume of sales to pull stunts like this.
This is the root of the thing. IS @ 15% and 10% of the port makes double 123 @ 50%. No anger, no worrying about "fairness", they simply won't be worth the effort.

Actually, I wouldn't disagree with this - you can have well argued posts delivered anonymously but even these would be strengthened if the author is prepared to stand over them (as you yourself argue with examples). Actually there are only 2 reasons to be anonymous - fear or dishonesty. How valid is any opinion when even the author is not prepared to stand over it?

Course if that was the intent we wouldn't be there in the first place with approval ratios in the high 90s

How old is old? I have to say that I still have no clue what makes a seller - some take off, others don't but still getting regular sales on some of my first 10.

Again, it's not the "80%" that will make a difference but the 80% of the "20%", who have accounts on the big 4 and who will have their commissions cut.

All of them except 123 so next year it will be all of them

80% won't leave for sure but many of these will be those who haven't even passed the exam on IS / SS. I reckon quite a chunk of the 20% will be affected (the really top guys will be in the top 5% or less). Generally, burning bridges is not a great move but many, many can stop uploading without noticable pain. Sure the people who keep 50% should stay but that won't be any extra for the site.
817
« on: December 18, 2012, 09:48 »
Yes, the guys who keep their % should stay as should those who get an increase. If the rest of us quit or at least stop uploading and the impact on the bottom line might lead to a reconsideration. Seems even IS realise that an unhappy pool of suppliers is not good for business (whether or not action is taken is another thing) - for a small player the loss of goodwill could be a disaster,

Definitely no new stuff but will hold off for a bit on the delete - DP look too cheap so nowhere else to go after top 4.

Actually just noticed a few "additional" sales - unfortunately subs but, as you say, a sale is a sale that might not have happened with a jpg

I won't presume to comment on the pictures but don't the IS tests accumulate? I think I submitted 3 and 1 got through, then 2 with1 through again and then a final 1. They may not have a lot of fans but still much more worthwhile than any of the others except SS.

Why would you even think of being a stool pigeon for istock? I have nothing against them personally but lots of folks feel they are not exactly fair so an element of karma if someone is putting one over on them?

as I am kind I have PMed him and he haven't even answered, glad I made it clear if he uploads a single file to an agency beside iStock I will contact them
Why would you do that?

Does anyone have a clue as to what's going on?
The editor (not only @ SS) don't have "Don't like this image" option so they must pick something. I guess the "out of focus" it's at the beginning of the list.
Most of the times I receive this rejection too... I think, the reason must be something else than focus.
Nail on the head

Level 3 image sells medium size for 12 credits. A few days later the same image, now level 4, sells large size for 10 credits. I probably wouldn't have noticed except that the same image was involved but seems like it should have been 15 credits for the larger sale - Error? More experiments? Sale prices at contributors expense?
