...In all honesty I am not sure it's all his fault at iStock. Getty likes to blame him but my guess is they tied his hands.
It absolutely isn't all Kelly Thompson's fault - there's lots of blame to go around. However,...
He handled the initial 2010 cash grab badly, and then when it blew up in the contributor community he tried to smooth it over and was so inept at that and clueless as to what he was dealing with that he made it much worse instead of better. Jonathan Klein's scorched earth policies and greed caught up with him in the end, but Kelly was just so out of his depth it wasn't funny. Prior to that, during 2009 when the site was in one of its many stages of being broken because they'd tried to "improve" it, he seemed completely out of touch with what a mess things were (this from a Q&A at the iStockalypse in Calgary). I don't know what he was supposed to be good at - other than being Bruce Livingstone's friend I don't know why he was there
i don't know about Kelly. but i know that Bruce Livingstone was the one who made all the money when he sold istock. wiki : 2006, Livingstone sold iStockphoto to Getty Images for $50 millionwhether Kelly was his mouthpiece or getty's whipping boy, it seems many are not forgiving about Kelly. if Kelly was BL's friend, why did Kelly not leave with BL??? anyway, still, it's ironic how no one said the same thing about Livingstone and his new dream agency if you were ever in a position where you were paid to be the whipping boy (eg. management to fire the employees, etc) you will know that it is not your buddy the upper management who is the one who fired you in the lower management. it is the owner or the people who kept most of the money , and never did any of the dirty work. my only thing i don't like about 500 is whether they want to be a social-media with thumbs up and great work, come visit me ppl over there. once they decide they want to be another ss of the old fame, then i will take them seriously, Kelly or not.

cobalt on November 15, 2015, 11:12 More people around the world have some kind of emotional connection to Paris, than to Damascus or large cities in Africa that also have many attacks and violence.
The terrorists know this, an attack there will get them more attention and a lot more money from their supporters than an attack in Beirut. ---------------------------------------------------------------
BRAVO ! bINGO!!!
it isn't that i do not grieve for the 140 dead. if it's just the number that shakes you to warrant a "discussion" to this to perpetuate the terrorists spread of terror, here's something with bigger number for you to grieve and ponder...
239 million people in sub-Saharan Africa were hungry/undernourished in 2010 (its most recent estimate). 925 million people were hungry worldwide...
that is times more than 140 ppl.

definitely go along with jo ann, best to get a PR if you can. this will minimize the risk of future problems. i find that the site that sells the most are the more likely to err on the side of caution, as jo ann said.

it varies. but you may have the same trend as i do..ie the best sellers sell almost daily. sometimes more than once a day. and really, it is these daily sellers that are bringing in the money.
which comes back to a comment someone made in another thread. would your sales go down if you don't upload new images? for me, the answer is no... because the best sellers continue to gain downloads and no doubt gain their position on pg 1 first row.
is this your experience too???

Not quite dead, only mostly dead. Lifetime earnings since 2009 = $1924. I generally make around $200 a year with 840 files. Comes in handy around Christmas.
true, rimglow... at least you are getting some money. i gather you stopped uploading, or are the new uploads making the money for you?

definitely yes i am. the main purpose of terrorism is to spread terror and paranoia. in spreading the news and discussion, you are doing exactly what they want you to do...
That must be by far the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard regarding criticism, discussion, and spreading of information.
yes, and they said the same thing about some other ridiculous person when he told the public the world is round and not flat. the intelligent boob came back with the response...
"That must be by far the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard regarding criticism, discussion, and spreading of information rumour"

What you are doing here is imposing your own criteria on what information is practically calling all information rumour. If you dont like certain aspects of the discussion, critize those, dont paint it all as rumour.
Information means nothing by itself. It needs discussion and criticism to mean somethin and you just rejected those as means to that end. Maybe it is people like you who are of the impression that earth is flat since all discussion regarding it's non-flattness must be rumour and these discussions dont belong here anyway?Hows that?
isn't everyone here trying to impose their own critieria... even the comment you just made... which obviously you did not read what i said ... i did not say the world is flat... i said the world is round..have you taken a look at yourself in the mirror lately???

Normally, I don't involve in a discussion if it's out of my interests. Sometimes I leave after halfway through if I lose my interest. Then I don't worry what others discuss about. Probably you can try the same. No one is forced to involve in each and every thread. Just a suggestion.
while we're OT, can anyone recommend the best diaper for incontinence
Really, over 100 innocent people died and you're making jokes like this?
definitely yes i am making joke of it... because even more than 100 ppl could die if you help them spread their terror. the more powerful weapon of terrorism or any form of bullying is the insurgent into your mind.. to make you believe they are more powerful than you think. if the general public are afraid, the terrorist will have already succeeded to spread terror and paranoia of their threat and power to seize the general public by getting the common folks to spread the news of their terror. in spreading the news and discussion, you are doing exactly what they want you to do... granted the newspapers discuss this, but they do not blow it out of proportion to give it headlines. even when a so-called copyist-terrorist is trying his own to terrorize who he considers the guilty party, the police or dept of defence or whatever, do not entertain these people to discuss it any further. ok, back to serious business, you still haven't answered my question... what is the best diaper for incontinence because when people get paranoid they drip constantly ... Also, don't forget that you can put the off-topic comment about an equally off-topic thread on ignore if you wish

off topic like reddit or pickup gurus,, or just plain way off topic rather than closely related photography topics other than microstock.
Shouldn't they go in the massage board for "General Photography Discussion"? http://www.microstockgroup.com/general-photography-discussion/
ya, if a massage is what they really want

are you going to pull your port from SS if the preview isn't reduced in size?
Don't know just yet. Pulling the entire port would be drastic. Depends if there are other changes coming.
drastic, or as another colleague said insane. i got this from wiki... Unaddressed protests may grow and widen into civil resistance, dissent, activism, riots, insurgency, revolts, and political and/or social revolution. Some examples of protests include:
Northern Europe in the early 16th century (Protestant Reformation) North America in the 1770s (American Revolution) France in 1789 (French Revolution) etc etc etc (perharps this one... apolitical protest... shutterstock contributors protest against over large preview and dl. for now, we are in the protest stage, ... but we still have many other stages to go if the protest is unaddressed... before we reach insanity or stupidity as to delete our portfolio

It's true, they probably won't get any money which has already been paid out. I just meant that they may not get their next payout, as I was only referencing Karen's post. From iStock's contract: "Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, iStock is entitled to set-off against any amount owing to Supplier, all amounts to which iStock is or may be entitled under this Agreement or otherwise at law, including withholding amounts as security for any pending or threatened claim relating to any matter which is the subject of a representation, warranty or indemnity of Supplier under this Agreement." I'd still like to think that somehow the ripped-off artists would be paid, but ...
so the dude/duda is gone from is. bravo to stvagna maybe stvagna should start a new sideline ... stock photography/illustrator fraud bounty hunter and charge 50% of the earnings lost by the rightful owner

i don't know about the rest, but i for one , hate to see leaf's forum turned into having the top 5 issues as off topics instead of what he wanted this forum to be ... microstock photography.. off topic like reddit or pickup gurus,, or just plain way off topic rather than closely related photography topics other than microstock. we have this site as the only forum worth reading and sharing about views on microstock.. why try to replace it with talks on incontinence, PQQ and mitocondria biogenesis, what i can do with wet sock and body odour,etc.. whatever... i hope you see where i am going??? it's like someone going into a camera club or golfer's club to pickup on terrorism or crochet or wife-swopping, etc etc etc it's just not the place... esp when the web has tons of each appropriate topic forums also, as shadysue pointed out, there are lurkers who have not commented at all ... so let's keep this forum out of harm's way

as leaf titled this forum... MSG , it is not about discussing mono sodium glutamate and even more, it is not about discussing mass suicide genocide or what other MSG means
This thread is posted in "Off Topic" section.
doesn't matter. there are forums where you can talk about terrorism until the cows come home or till your ying yang whatever falls out. if you come here to preach some anti this or pro that, you came to the wrong place. ss forum etc also has offtopics but it just means something else other than micro stock.. but terrorism or pointing a finger at certain sections of our society is not really the place on msg. sorry !!! here's one for the true terrorist forum, why not go where there is a common thread , no pun intended http://www.topix.com/forum/news/terrorismor just go to any newspaper site, they all have a page for "your opinion" on terrist attack in paris unless you prefer to discuss a topic here where we are more "know only about" taking photos..

I submitted around 20 photos; 20 of my best photos. Just submit the stuff that you normally shoot, but the best photos you have. If you shoot food, send those shots that look like they come from Jamie Oliver's magazine. If you shoot hipsters or lifestyle, make sure they as good as from Kinfolk etc. If you shoot travel, landscape or wildlife; well look at Lonely Planet or NatGeo for reference. My point is, don't send stuff that you think look good only on flyers or banners, but good enough for editorial section in popular magazines. Nothing wrong with those photos for flyers and banners, but you can save them later after you got in .
but stocksy do not accept editorials, no??? which is why i have not even looked towards applying to stocksy or canva
Stocksy doesn't offer editorial licensing. Stocksy favors realistic, editorial STYLE of photos.
ah, finally someone with a specific description of what stocksy really wants!!! thx 4 the headsup.

There always seems to be that very large gap between what these agency people say they're looking for, vs. what they actually want.
Maybe it's one of those "they will know it when they see it."
Frederic Raphael, talking about Stanley Kubrick, summed it better: "You dont know exactly what he wants, but you know he wants he doesnt know what and hopes you can supply it"
so funny, i choked and spat my beer onto my laptop !!! i am going to send you a bill soon if my laptop chokes on me . seriously, i guess that explains why they are taking so long to approve or reject some of the applicants. waiting to have their portfolio pop up and grab them by the throat ...hmmm, i know i don't want these... but these ones i am still wondering maybe yes, maybe noooo, maybe...
oh oh oh etudiante rapide,... now that's a definite no !!! (no, because i have not decided to submit there too)

This is a very low level discussion. I haven't learned anything in the last 5 pages, other than photographers have very little understanding in history, economy and politics. Therefore it was a big waste of time for me. When I read independent news outlets like ZeroHedge, the general level of understanding is much higher, people also disagree but you can learn quite a lot - that's the difference.
MSG is great when it comes to micro agencies and photography, and that's about it.
you were right on the spot in your one before comment when you say this is not the place to discuss politics, then you come back a 100% turnaround to continue to say msg forum ppl is only great in their head with photography and agencies. you are right first time, and second time,.. but only partly-right on the latter comment. this is not a place we care to discuss politics, there are forum where you can discuss that or spread your political patroitism or beliefs , but really, most of us are not interested in discussing politics here. as leaf titled this forum... I look forward to clicking Omendrive and having IS say page not found.
On December 5th Omendrive will cash out his profit from selling other people's images. It's a shame that iStock allows this robbery!
There is a good probability that if s/he gets their port closed, they won't get money. However, whether the actual artists will get their due share of their work which has sold from their port, I'm not so sure. Maybe they'd need to pursue that themselves, which might be a downside of fast takedowns.
Presumably this issue applies equally to all the sites they were on, not just iS.
i am not sure how they are going to get the money already paid to the fraud artist. if they are in the same country as the agency , i can see that possible. but say if the fraud artist is in a foreign land , say nigeria or vietnam or philipines , and istock being in canada, i can't see this going anywhere. that's why fraud cases even via telemarketing, etc never get charged and served... nigerian fraud especially.

So what you're saying is, that if I download only preview of one of your images it will show on your map? Not to mention that SS didn't have previews until 1 month ago. I know, that location of the sale can't be precise. But I always thought that what shows on our maps is an actual sale.
good point Dumuc. what Scott says to me is that downloads is what show on the map. so, a preview dl is considered a mark on the map. which in more to say, it is a dl which we do not get any money. i think ss should look at it this way, from their earning standpoint... how many preview downloads are you giving away each day???
that is money ss is not paying us because ppl are downloading our work for free
