why try to compete with 1200 pages of images?

or add a goldfish

« on: April 29, 2010, 00:06 »
mine is about 55% very frustrating ! my dreamstime approval rating is about 80% and of course they reject the best sellers :)  My approvals there have been up a bit lately, mostly I think due to flood of uploads slowing.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Finding a partner
« on: April 28, 2010, 17:16 »
I would suggest agreeing on an average time that should be spent on each photo in order to get it up to scratch, come to an agreement on price and make a one off payment, otherwise it could get really hard to track to the end of time, gives you flexibility to do what every you want with the images in the future.

Well, Thomas, let me put it in a different wording: "Would you please be so kind to refrain from making irrelevant wow-style comments. Many thanks in advance."

@ Claude: Nothing personal, really (even in spite of your BTW addendum). Obviously, I just don't appreciate unsubstantial speculations when it comes to money, no matter how princely amounts are involved.

Thanks a lot, UncleGene! This is what I forgot to say in my OP: no, AFAIK, I do not donate!... :)

Well if you don't want unsubstantial speculations then don't ask here and ask 123rf directly.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Copycats
« on: April 23, 2010, 17:29 »
It is against the rules to download other people's photos and use them in your work.

Yes... If you don't have license which allows that... Some micro agencies have such allowance in their licenses ;-)

[ADDED] I think it is called 'ELECTRONIC ITEMS FOR RESALE' License... Thus as Macrostock dinosaur I really don't understand it...

I don't think that it true, electronic items for resale is for web templates, screen savers and alike.

Otherwise you could buy a few extended licences of the best sellers in microstock and submit them you could easy make a profit with a couple of hundred downloads on Istock. If this was possible people would be doing it. The only option I think that you can do this is buy the copywrite.

they just had the hockey world cup Australia won. there is world cup of heaps of different sports, rugby union, rugby league, hockey, netball etc.

I don't see how they can copyright "world cup" on its own.

In other words if they are using the Flickr account as storage or sharing vehicle (between say project group members), it is not violation of any rules. Except that it sounds pretty stupid.

I don't think that's true. If they are allowing the images to be shared by multiple members, they would have needed to purchase an appropriate seat license for that and right off the top of my head, I am not sure which sites offer that license. And there is NO existing license on any of the sites, that I know of, that allows one person to purchase a web-sized image, post it on their site, and allow others to "share" it. Whether there is a download button there or not. That's called re-distribution and copyright infringement. They are allowed to purchase the image, post it on their site for their own personal use, period.

And if they did purchase the correct license, they should have kept the copyright information of the contributor intact or given them credit. I'm not sure this is a requirement, but...

The only license that would allow it would be "buy the rights" on dreamstime

General Stock Discussion / Re: Infinite monkey theorem
« on: March 12, 2010, 23:07 »
There is a big difference between 1,000 and infinity.  1,000 monkeys would struggle to type 1 word.

Yes, but this thing was born in typewriter era :-) Tools now are more advanced and can do more for a monkey :-) Maybe now monkey from this experiment may have a tool that would generate a 100 words randomly with one click of the button so number of words would grow exponentially :-)

My question is do microstock really need professional photographers when equipment is so advanced. What portion of SS 10 million photos are done by professionals, 1%, 5%? If Yuri removes his portfolio from everywhere would it hurt agencies? Next best probably would take his place right away.

They do need professionals if they want to keep taking market share from the more expensive suppliers. If they want to just sell isolated objects, people smiling on headsets and goldfish your band of monkeys can provide it.

With your monkey and typewriter example all the things needed to provide the output are infront of the monkeys.
For top quality stock attractive models, props and locations don't just randomly appear infront of the monkeys and sign model releases.
Also you need infinite time to produce, If I'm a agency and I'm waiting for the monkeys to produce I might go broke before they come up with the goods.I need  combination of monkeys and professionals to provide me with the goods.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: istock has roughly 85k contributors
« on: March 12, 2010, 18:52 »
I imagine it includes buyers aswell, you can have designers in your network and send sitemails etc.

Kelly said in a recent announcement that they have over 100,000 new registrations per month.  Obviously the vast majority of those are buyers, and there's probably relatively few who actually spend money. So the 85,000 could not include buyers.

Okay maybe I meant "designers" that submit to design of the week, post and read forums etc.
You know the ones in the forums recently complaining that prices are too high, I use to get everything I wanted for $1 now I want more but it costs $10 etc. :)

Dreamstime.com / Re: Incorrect keywords DT
« on: February 26, 2010, 16:10 »
I flagged a number of files ages ago and am now getting response (some abusive) from the contributors of the files.

If I had known that I would get these responses I wouldn't have flagged them, not because I think the keywords were even marginably correct but because I don't want to deal with people complaining at me for their spam.

I much prefer the Istock system where there is no chance of retailiation.

On a side note shutterstock has the worst spam around, do they have any reporting systems ?

Veer / Re: 9 sales today at Veer
« on: February 23, 2010, 01:14 »
I got 5 for a total of $17.50. Hadn't had a sale since november.

Looks to me that these had been stuck in the system and just got bunched up together and reported today. Like someone else said maybe partner sales or something.

I regards to refusnds due to CC fraud etc.  The way I see it that should be included in the 70% or whatever fotolia take for being the agent.

I have no control over their security measures but it is my content that gets stolen not fotolia's. They should absorb the theft themselves as it is 100% in their control and 0% in mine.

It doesn't affect me monetarily because there is no raise for black diamond even if I were exclusive, but it is still nice to know I will probably make it to BD, even without grandfathering now.

Yeah but if/when you are exclusive you could put/(forced transfer) of your entire portfolio on thinkstock and get an extra 2cents per download compared to normal diamond. :)

Veer / Re: Wow! Major sales at Veer!
« on: February 17, 2010, 01:25 »
no sales in the last three months there and views have also taken a steep downward trend too.

around 250 photos online only fotolia rejects more of my photos than veer.

Had more sales on snapvillage.
Disappointed with the performance.

IMO this is about building market share. Not about cutting commissions. Cutting commissions would be collateral damage if it happened. It may not even be what they want. My guess is that they do not want a fight with the world of photographers. There are two good reasons why not:

1. Sooner or later another model might emerge. Nobody can tell with new models but the way things go they can take over a market very suddenly. If the 2 key issues could somehow be solved a new non agency model could become dominant.

2. Equally as worryingly for them. Someone else could set up an alternative league and  build a successful high end micro like agency for (guess) about $100m up front. That would have to include buying the exclusive loyalty of about 100 of the best and most prolific content producers.

I don't agree, getty loves to fight the world of photographers.

Getty will just buy any new serious competitors out.

They'll have a Big war chest after they screw everybody over.

If thinkstock doesn't work shutterstock will be bought out and destroyed.

what does hemera mean or stand for ??

If I was Getty I would set the site up with say 2,000,000 photos holding back content so they can always have 20,000 new photos added this week. Maybe this is what is happening with the getty owned content.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Who's sending 1099's this year?
« on: February 02, 2010, 16:22 »
I believe (based on nothing), that you can either report book keeping on either method, ie when you earn it or when you redeem it but you can't change your method once you start.

"without any substantial limitation or restriction as to the time or manner of payment or condition upon which payment is to be made"

As I rarely acheive a payout each month then I believe there is a substantial limitation because they won't pay me.

« on: February 02, 2010, 16:09 »
So did IS just buy them to kill them?  Or did IS buy them for the free images site?

I will never understand this  ???

Istock didn't buy them it was Getty and they bought Jupiter, which included among alot of other things StockXpert & SXC. StockXpert doesn't fit in with their Istock plan so its gone.

I just wish they could have announced what was the plan a while ago so you could make decision on what to do next.

StockXpert was about 10% of my montly earnings. Hopefully the buyers go to whatever agency gives me the best $ per download.
I truely hope none of them go to Fotolia.

SS buying BigStock is one of the strange ones. I don't know what is going to go on there. Doesn't make sense to me for SS to have bought them. DT or FT as they are bigger competitors would have made sense but maybe they weren't up for sale or too expensive for SS to buy.

Adobe Stock / Re: Increase in Credit Value at Fotolia?
« on: February 02, 2010, 02:52 »
Just in case it helps: A fotolia employee on the German forum confirmed that the credit value will stay the same for contributors and will vary for buyers from $ 0,75 to $ 1,20 (or Euros, GBP respectively) according to how many credits are purchased.

Can I buy 1000 credits at $0.75 per credit then request payout at $1.00 ?  Somehow I doubt it.
