General Stock Discussion / Re: Best agencies for footage sales?
« on: January 25, 2016, 04:53 »
Pond5 for me.  They have had a problem with review times lately though that has taken far too long to fix, so I'm not as confident about them as I once was.

General - Stock Video / Re: Thoughts on 360 videos?
« on: January 25, 2016, 04:48 »
I got a Ricoh Theta S.  The 360 video is low quality but the stills are good.  I think VR will take off this year, I've only used a google cardboard equivalent that uses my phone screen and that works well.  There should be a market for VR stills and video clips if it does take off.  Much more interesting than 3D.

I like the look of it but its a shame if we can't make any money from it.

The geniuses at Istock will be flattered to see that SS has followed their example:
1.  Make detrimental-to-suppliers announcement on a Friday afternoon.
2.  Supply NO notice period.  As I recall, SS always gave at least 30 days notice and this comes into effect Monday.
Come on SS! You were my last hope for fare business on microstock market.
Don't kill my last hope!!!  >:(
I think the last hope went years ago when we didn't do enough to deter sites from cutting commissions.  The majority of contributors that weren't prepared to make a stand have left us in this situation.  Sites can keep cutting the amount they pay us, knowing it will just increase their profits.

Most of mine are under a minute without keywording but I can take a lot longer with isolations and anything I think might sell a lot.

881
I honestly don't see the point of announcing such a big change, and then not giving the details immediately. Like it's some no-name company with two and a half employees.

Unless they want to see how the community reacts to adjust the percentages depending on the reaction. Shutterstock does a lot of A/B testing, trying out different things, so it's unlikely, but also I wouldn't be surprised.

In any case, if the change is negative for me (top tier), I will deactivate enhanced licences (it's very easy to do - account settings - Enhanced License -> Opt Out)
Maybe give the bad news on Friday and give us something more positive on Monday to make it seem better than it really is?  An old trick and one I hoped SS wouldn't use on us but I can't think of any other reason not to give us the full details in one go.

How will Adobe and Shutterstock react?
I doubt it will make much difference to them.  They were competing with Veer and they are down in the low earners in the poll here.

883
They could sell EL's for much higher prices.  I don't think its hard to reach the top tier with SS, unlike some other sites that make it almost impossible.

884
I bet our microstock images end up on istock or thinkstock.  I removed all my best images from istock but it seems pointless as they will probably end up getting them from some other site.  Think I will wait and see what happens.

Haven't got the email about the commission cut yet, what's taking them so long :)

Envato / Re: Mood after 1st 2016...
« on: January 22, 2016, 04:49 »
I dont know how everybody else, but now when I see new sale on Envato Im not happy like before 2016. Im angry! Im angry becouse I know how much money Im loosing with every sale. All of this is of course becouse their move to US and introducing US Tax to ours (already low) royalties.

Here is Royalty structure for Non Exclusives (sale to US):
HD video priced $8. Envato gets: $5,12 You get: $0.96
4K video priced $25. Envato gets: $16, You get: $3

Im still watching and  waiting for their solution of this situation. If not, time will come to break this humiliation.
How has that time not come already?  Tolerating a site that is so much worse than others is damaging for all of us.  They've had over a year to go back to being an agency but they haven't done it because they are still getting supplied by contributors.  So they will probably keep making things worse for us and easier for them.  The only way out of this mess is if enough of us deactivate our portfolios, I did it a year ago.

Wont people get bored of uploading if they don't make much money?  I would of thought that would of happened already.

Pond5 / Re: Pond5 subscription program to start
« on: January 19, 2016, 10:06 »
I used to think they were great but it seems strange that they lost control of the review queue at a time of year when most sites have faster reviews and they deactivated lots of SFX portfolios and made it impossible for some people like me to verify them.  So they have a slightly tarnished reputation with me at the moment.  They could fix these two things easily but have shown no inclination to do so as yet.  Hence the disappearance of my last site referral link in my signature, I used to have 3, now they're all gone.

There's also people charging $200+ for clips on P5, don't think that's going to change.  It works with stills, SS have been pushing their higher prices up over the years while keeping a cheap subs offer going.

This thread needs sorting out.  The original subject wasn't great but much more interesting to microstockers than the hijacked subject.  I suggest anyone more interested in politics and philosophy should use more relevant forums.

Pond5 / Re: Pond5 subscription program to start

I don't see a big  problem because we don't have to give clips to the subs program.  It will work like VB, if you have something that isn't in the subs program, people will pay for it.  Anyone without any unique content is screwed but that's going to happen anyway.

This is one of the reasons why I still don't like Fotolia.  Adobe have a lot of work to do before that changes.

Looks interesting.  Surprised Know Your Onions hasn't lambasted them for this yet :)

A lot of my portfolio is still pending cut outs.  Maybe I should do them myself?

Pond5 / Re: Pond5 - average review time?
« on: January 17, 2016, 06:47 »
I'm not sure if the long review times are just because they have had a lot more uploads, possibly from people quitting exclusivity with istock or if they have cut back on reviewers.  Either way, I think they should of addressed the problem by now.

Off Topic / Re: David Bowie dies of cancer aged 69
« on: January 15, 2016, 04:44 »
I'm from Central Canada.  I swear I was the only weird kid on the prairies that was obsessed with David Bowie.   Yes, I've gone to halloween parties as Ziggy Startdust.  The man was so freakin eccentric.  And oh my goodness, the talent!  I was addicted to the way he layered his vocals and his androgynous costumes.  And his songs!  Figuring out the lyrics - Spiders from Mars?  Uncle Tom?  The worlds he created - weather they were figuratively in space or the Berlin era with Brian Eno.  Kids these days are so cheated of this kind of genius.  All the songs are about "Making her headboard rock" or similar gratification - where have the mystery and the longing and the chase gone?   Where is the beginning, middle and end of a great ballad?

I saw a post on facebook yesterday that said
We paid for music  (insert photo of Bowie and some other ugly mug I didn't entirely recognize , but you didn't have to be beautiful in the 70's, you had to have the raw talent)
So you don't have to  (insert photos of Bieber, Kanye and Minaj

We drifted apart about the "Let's Dance" era.  I missed so much.  Just last week I rediscovered Bowie on Spotify and had his tunes looping through my edits, and this week he is everywhere.  Last night I had a shoot in a community centre and even the Zumba class in the gym next door cooled down to Bowie.

So long space man.
I disagree about new music, there's great music out there if you look for it and keep an open mind.  Every era has a lot of dross and music is more fragmented now but there's still great musicians in the current era.  David Bowie was inspired by new music throughout his career.  People from older generations would of made similar comments about David Bowie in the 70's that you made about current music.  Complaining about new music is just a sign of getting old.  I love lots of music from the 60's and 70's but I also like Tame Impala, Muse, Jake Bugg, La Roux, Mean Lady and many more that are making music now.

I haven't uploaded to them for years now.  Don't care what they accept, I rejected their less than 20% commission.

There's 29 days this February, an extra day to complain about low sales.

Off Topic / Re: David Bowie dies of cancer aged 69
« on: January 11, 2016, 06:45 »
I was listening to his new album yesterday, quite amazing to be still coming out with something original at his age.  It was a shock to hear the news today because I thought someone that famous couldn't keep the fact that they were dying of cancer secret but he achieved it.  The last videos have a new meaning now.

My favourite Bowie song is "Never Let Me Down".  Sounds so much like a John Lennon record.  He made so many great songs, I expect he will dominate the top 10 in the UK for the next month.  Just hope there's no posthumous album, unless he planned it.

Envato / Re: Contributors are paying envato's taxes..
« on: January 11, 2016, 05:41 »
Looks like such a mess, I have no idea why any contributor would want to use them now, as they have made a monumental mistake and done nothing to fix it.  Deactivating portfolios does make a difference with smaller sites.  Buyers will look elsewhere when they can't find what they want and they probably wont go back when they see what other sites have to offer.

I don't like seeing sites fail but when they make life difficult for so many of their contributors, they don't have my sympathy.  It would of been so easy to go back to being what everyone thinks they are, an agency.
