Dreamstime.com / Re: Do you believe that DT is dying?
« on: March 10, 2015, 18:34 »
I had my first non sub sale of the month today. Not dead, but not entirely well either.

902
obviously the average # of images over the year is not 50,000,000 but if so that would be under .60 per image... whatever it really is, it seems that it is falling.

I am guessing that BS is not paying out 28% considering their severe RC scheme even if many artists are bridge to bigstocked into a higher rate than they would get for RC (is that still going on?)

General Stock Discussion / Re: False Envy
« on: March 07, 2015, 21:36 »
The way I look at FB I figure if all my friends each do something really cool or interesting once a month, that pretty much fills up my news feed with cool interesting things. That doesn't mean they are all always doing cool and interesting things though. It is probably similar for microstock as far as best months - at least for a while everyone has one at one site every once in a while and if that is all they post it looks like everyone else is having them all the time. Unfortunately it also seems to appear to be true for worst months lately.

123RF / Re: 123RF - dead or takes time?
« on: March 05, 2015, 16:46 »
My sales never doubled when that was promised. In fact I don't think they ever really increased at all. My RC totals drift up and sadly mostly down but in the same general level they were when they first announced the "lets screw the contributors" RC scheme. Starting out there would be especially painful since sales are seldom for a good amount even if you got 50%.

I agree with what EmberMike said. The only incentive would be if it helped keep people from quitting microstock altogether or sending everything to somewhere like stocksy or Alamy RM or any other place that people think might make them more than .38 or maybe kept people from throwing in the towel on the long run prospects and supporting things like the DPC just because they figure they might as well get every penny out of this lost cause before it is all dried up.

I would love a raise, maybe they could start small say by making the royalties on BS comparable to SS.

As for me controlling my costs, I have minimal control over the cost of gas, internet, computer equipment, photo equipment, food, lodging... Actually  I do have some control, but I have already squeezed them about as much as I can and I will have a hard time going below zero.

IS - 0 regular downloads (on an admittedly small and weak port, but still - how the mighty have fallen). Dec subs and PP was pretty good (for them) though.

General - Top Sites / Re: The Wall
« on: January 29, 2015, 14:12 »
I think if you want to do this for real work for the long haul you have to plan on producing enough selling content that when you hit the wall you are happy with your income compared to the amount of work you put in. Compare this to a "regular" job. How much do you work, how much do you like it, and how much do you make?

Unfortunately the changes at the sites probably have as big an effect on your long term earning as what you do (well, maybe not as big - but a big effect and one you can't really do much about other than pull the plug or take your images elsewhere).

Unfortunately this isn't some magic passive income machine where every new image you create will increase your income forever by a certain amount. (but if you do stop producing new content you should still make income on a (hopefully) long and gradual decreasing tail).

I wish their tool that showed the relative numbers of searches still worked, going from 1 search to 5 searches is a big increase, but not worth submitting a pic for.

"time lapse" - 26,890 searches

search for "time lapse" - 145,518 results

That isn't exactly inspiring either, Fashion had 27K searches and 68K results...

They even suggest I should be taking selfie's (I actually did submit 2 last year, I think one was accepted and sold once) and pics of flowers... How useful is this info anyway?

Bigstock.com / Re: No more uploads for me
« on: January 27, 2015, 15:46 »
They do seem like the site where SS plays screw the contributor to decide what they want to do with SS in the future.

It would be nice if they would tell us how long they will keep paying .38 for subs for the bridge folks (they are still doing that aren't they - originally it was only supposed to be for 6 months or a year I thought).

General Stock Discussion / Re: How did 2014 compare to 2013?
« on: January 26, 2015, 12:48 »
down a bit from 2013 and a bit more from 2012 but up from 2011.

Port up about 10%.

Alamy was up (Dec saved it) along w/ FP, PD, 123, CS (although some of those are so small they aren't significant).    SS, BS, veer,  down. DT, IS, SF, P5 remarkably similar.

In general sales seem less steady and it is the few rare big sales that make or break a month (or year).

Software / Re: stacker program by Zerene
« on: January 22, 2015, 10:14 »
I did a few with Zerene a while ago. Usually there were a few spots that needed fixing afterwards, but they did pass inspection after some clean up. I never really got to a workflow that I liked or seemed worth the trouble for microstock though.

My understanding was that it is really optimized for large stacks (10's to over 100 images) of truly tiny things.

913
The bottom line is important, but not everything. If a site continually seems shady and moves the goalposts, etc. then I am unhappy with them and might not even work with them or may stop submitting or even remove images. I am much happier with .35 from Canva than I would be with .35 from some distribution deal where the buyer paid $35.

If there was another site w/ less sales but the same $ as SS, I'd upload there at the same time and be a lot happier. (some months Alamy does this, but over the long haul they don't).

I think things will trend the way the OP suggests, but it will take a long time and sites like SS will still get enough fresh content to be king for a long long time. (plus if they just churned their library they probably have plenty of buried content that would appear to be fresh).

914
I certainly have my suspicions on this and most deals these days that there is a per image component that we get a percent of and there is an up front deal fee (or however the accountants justify it) that we will never see a piece of.  I can see why the buyers and the sites would be fine with that and why it would hurt us.

Pond5 / Re: Pond5 launches The Public Domain Project
« on: January 20, 2015, 14:34 »
so can we take this material and then upload them back to p5 to sell? (perhaps with some subtle change?)

916
At least in my case IS produced quite well for a very limited number of images - so one image might take off and get flames and earn as much as all the others combined 'til they changed the best match and sales stopped. This was great if you were one of the favored or otherwise managed to get some images to "take off". Otherwise not so much.

On SS things were a little flatter and deeper - so with the same number of images and income on SS 50% might come from the top 20 percent of images and on IS they might come from the top 5% of images.

I have no idea how things work at IS now though.

Dreamstime.com / Re: Do you believe that DT is dying?
« on: January 19, 2015, 22:03 »
I am guessing the earnings page was done by someone who either was not interested in making the relevant information easily visible or perhaps with the goal of obscuring it. It was painfully easy to see when the last 20 sales were all subs before, now that is harder to see. As a painful aside I got a new low for credit value .118  ouch.

Shutterstock.com / Re: HUGE UPTICK ON SALES
« on: December 31, 2014, 16:19 »
The last month worse than this December at SS was Feb 2011. It was preceeded by 1 lackluster month and one better than this years average month...   It looks like overall December will be my BMY - but Alamy was the only good performer (and they performed very well).

919
I got some .70 and some .35 subs during this time period. Were they all supposed to be more than the standard or are the .70 subs just something different that I am not aware of (like the $2 pseudo subs).

General Stock Discussion / Re: Finding your sold images
« on: December 28, 2014, 20:41 »
also search for "copyright your name" and "copyright your sitename" and use the copyright symbol (cut and paste it) and the word "copyright" but you have to eliminate via search or wade through heaps of microstock site pages too.

921
nothing but subs for me since it started - too bad we can't get 100% on those - I wonder what it would be...

Alamy.com / Re: Alamy distributor commision
« on: December 24, 2014, 10:51 »
I feel worse about them cutting our 'normal' royalties from 60% to 50% to set up a new US office

I feel very good about 50% being the normal royalty rate and 30% being the minimum.

better than 60 and 40?

923
That ranks up there along with "your sales will double" as one of the great lies from 123RF.

924
I got an e-mail from them...

I got a sub sale for .70 and thought this might actually bring this month up, but then I got one for .35 and figured I guess not - plus I am pretty sure that we don't get 50% from sub sales. If it is like SS - more like 30% Still, it would be nice to get full royalty if I get any sales before it is over.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Your hopes for 2015
« on: December 22, 2014, 13:17 »
I'd love to see one or more of the smaller sites with fair payment take off. Maybe someone like p5 could get their search working a bit better (maybe it already is for all I know, I haven't messed with it lately) and gain some traction. In fact w/ the ability to set price and 50% to the artist, P5 would probably be my choice of a site to take off. I'd like to see faster reviews there too, but faster sales are a much higher priority.

My real dream would be for buyers to recognize just how low the percentage to the artists is and move towards the sites that pay more fairly.
