Newbie Discussion / Re: Newbie here with lots of questions
« on: June 26, 2011, 00:40 »
Ultimately, if the OP was able to answer or willing to reveal the answer to sjlocke's question, there wouldn't have been the knee jerk reaction from him and this thread would not have become as antagonistic as it has become. Abracadabra, has rattled a lot of people's cages here, by insinuating that people are unprofessional or trolls. Oh look, I haven't answered ur original question at all, I have strayed off the topic, it happens when people are in discussion. Get over it!! If you want absolute control over what is said or asked in a public forum, create ur own forum, so can delete what others are saying.

Might  be a good idea to drop a note into a Canstock thread.  Not sure if Duncan would be likely to read a Dreamstime one.  :)
What is wrong with me?  I thought I posted this comment in a thread where Duncan challenged someone to upload 400 photos to see how fast they would be reviewed... am I in a dream world?

Yes, you've got what is known as Microstockhome syndrome. You need to switch off from all microstock activities for a month. Give your passwords to your partner so that she can change them. Come back after a month and let us know how you got on.

I think more than half my port on dt is editorial. They are more lenient, as with the other agencies on quality for editorial images. The important thing is if there is some kind of story to the image. For the "Editorial info" section, I go to Google, put the filter on 1 year or less and search for something on the subject, then put the facts I find in this section and a link. I use the same info. for ss also. It's kind of a long process, but it helps to convince the reviewer that the image is relevant or topical.

First time I've heard the word booger. Is it American cuisine?  ::)

Matt, obviously there are just so many sales on the site, your email was in the queue for a full 3 weeks.  ::)

I'm at the airport and I just burst out laughing because of this thread. Now people are thinking, I hope he's not going to be sitting next to me.  :D

General Stock Discussion / Re: Fotolia's Watermark
« on: June 21, 2011, 11:16 »
I live in Indonesia. If I mention that I sell my photos online, often I get the reply, "Ah Fotolia". The people here seem to love the photos on Fotolia and the vast majority of Indonesians have never made an online transaction in their lives.

I think they all offer poor exchange rates. There was a similar thread not too long back.  :)

If that is the case, then I guess Ladas win hands down.

Of course, we all know we'd choose a Lada over an Audi anytime. No contest.

It's not a question of what we choose, it's a question of what buyers are choosing. Istock is no Audi, as it sells so much of the same as what ss and the others have. The same only they price it like luxury cars. You can't find Audis in one showroom and then go to another showroom and find it at half the price.

Back to the original topic, please....

Google's image search turned up one of my beach pictures here.. Mine is center bottom row.

They offer a "painted" image to the customer. If the customer wishes to have a background replaced, they can pick from one of the images shown.

I know that someone who painted (or collaged) something with one of my copyrighted works couldn't claim copyright to the resulting work, but can they sell it? This seems a bit like the Obama Hope poster dispute (minus the arguing about which photo it was based on).

I'm fairly certain this was sold by iStock but now I'm independent, I doubt they'd look at the issue (and the image has already sold via Canstock, so it might be them).

This site doesn't look like it's going to be the Wal-mart of hand painted photos, but I wondered if using stock in this way was within the license terms.

They need an EL, we need to sue their backsides.

If you read down to the comments, you'd find this which does give some additional perspective......

\ istockphoto and shutterstock.com (which i use both for buying and selling) are like comparing apples to bananas. shutterstock.com has some of the WORST quality files along with search functionality. We get way more downloads on shutterstock BUT way more income from less downloads/files on iStock. Shutterstock accepts all our files (bar a few) and iStock only accepts a small selection. Quality vs quantity are the obvious synergies between these 2 companies(shutterstock the later). I really dont see any value in comparing them, other than they are selling a product in a similar category. In the same way Audi and Lada sell cars ( id drive an Audi if i could afford it customers will do the same). If you are a quality / pro producer of content and want a good volume of sales iStock is your market place. If you are an amateur producer of content chances are you will get most of your files accepted to shutterstock. Hope this helps JasV

If that is the case, then I guess Ladas win hands down.

Had a chuckle at the title. So contributors are having less sales and assume that's because the buyers are leaving..What bollocks !
More contributors ,more choice of content =Less sales.Simple.

So why hasn't the same happened with Shutterstock?  I'm sure the demise of istock is exaggerated here but it sure looks like buyers are going to other sites.

Istock's loss is Shutterstock's gain

On a side note, leaf, what's going on with your filter?  I wrote "that's bullsh1t" and it converted to "that's crap".  Now I don't know about you but I don't see how bullsh1t is more offensive than crap.  Is a turd specifically from a bull worse than turds in general?  What if I wrote "that's elephantturd!" or "that's monkeypoo!" or "that's horsemanure!" or "that's catfeces!", will these be filted too?

Sorry I just don't see how the word "bullsh1t" could offend anyone.

I would like either an explanation or the filter changed to "monkeypoo" for shits and giggles :)

EDIT:  Ok this is very interesting.  "shits" is allowed?  I've had "crap" replaced with "crap" before.  Don't mind me I'm just going to save this to test the filter some more.

EDIT SOME MORE:  I'm baffled now.  One would think that "shits" in plural, would be worse than a single one.  I would cringe a tad more over a pile of turds than just one.  It might be just me though  ;D

Ok folks, carry on.

I'm just testing the filter to see what comes out. Ok here we go. Politicians tend to speak through their backsides. They will say any kind of fecal matter, in order to get votes. But once they get into power, they forget about what they promised and defecate on the people who voted them in.

Ok, I'm posting this now, I used the some really bad swear words. Lets see how it turns out.

Maybe u can email PaintMyPhoto what a normal license covers and what an EL covers.

Chrome is fantastic. Starts up fast, browsing is fast, images look better, doesn't crash. Firefox always crashes for me, even though I usually update. I keep both firefox and Chrome open, I still like firefox for all the add ons. I haven't used Internet Explorer on my own laptops for about 5 years.

;D ;D

how about approving corrupted files? please check that out and after I will give CC a chance by uploading my port until "yesterday", I am sure instead of 2 sales from 2 years, I will have 4 on the next 2 :)

We went through a full site change over. Obviously, some corrupted files came through.  We have deleted them, and informed our programming staff.

As far as the slow sales goes, with a generalist portfolio, such as yours sales, can be a bit slower. I have a generalist portfolio myself and tend to sell slower, so I speak from experience.

As I said before, we are still working and building.  In the future, if you see something odd in your portfolio, please contact us by email so we can address your concerns right away.

Thanks.

I've heard that motorcross racing images do very well.

Thank you MR PaulieWalnuts for expressing my exact thoughts and saving me a lot of time and trouble articulating them.

+1

I still come here out of habit, but its getting to the stage that its become a daily dose of depressant. There's always been a bit of a negative sentiment around, but being so consistently negative isn't really healthy for anyone.
And now we get people being negative about the negativity :)

Multiplying two negatives makes a positive.

Why did u take ur port off in the past? No need to answer of course, if u don't want mention the issue.

If I may presume to answer for JoAnne - she went exclusive at Istockphoto.

Yay! Eggs baskets many. Me like.

I've always found uploading, navigation, attaching MRs (although I don't have many MRs) on 123rf a piece of cake. And yes they had an ftp problem at the weekend, but they seldom have problems with ftp. I love not having categories to choose from too, even though there are categories for buyers.

The national bird of Indonesia is the Eagle (Garuda) and the national airline carrier is named after the bird too. And the planes often plummet, similar to this eagle or overshoot their runways :-) I think they should change the name of the carrier to something like Swan Air.

Totally off topic, but I made the mistake of flying Garuda once. Never again.
Lol! Last year flights to Europe were allowed again after a 6 year ban. So if u live in Europe there maybe no escaping them.  :'(
