Hi there - just after a bit on insight over this. GDPR legislation comes into effect in May 2018 - https://www.eugdpr.org/ basically tightening up data protection regulations massively. I've tried doing some research into this regarding the following, but can't seem to find a definitive answer:

I do a lot of work designing websites for small businesses. For the sites a lot of the time these businesses want galleries of their own work (lovely shots of fencing and clean drains!). Ok, that's easy, send them to me and I'll set up the page for you.

My question is to comply with GDPR would I need to append either Alt Text to the image identifying the subject / who supplied it or/and would I need to ensure the relevant information is added to the image in the meta data as well - (file info fields in Photoshop / IPTC captions)?

I'm guessing a picture of a landscaped garden with differ from one with an identifiable house '/' person in the background:

What constitutes personal data?

Any information related to a natural person or 'Data Subject', that can be used to directly or indirectly identify the person. It can be anything from a name, a photo, an email address, bank details, posts on social networking websites, medical information, or a computer IP address.

If anyone does have knowledge on this, it would great if you could let me know what you think. I know there are lots of huge companies out there who design websites, containing both stock and customer supplied pictures - interested what this will mean to them.

The key here is that the same search term should produce different results on different devices. Not impressed. Got a response for what I thought was an underpayment of >$50 compared to their stats for the month. Turns out the over and underpayments have been going on for many years and this is a balancing issue over all that time. Basically they have discovered over / under payments going back to 2010.

I'll just let it go for the sake of the amount, however it leaves a nasty taste. It would be like me claiming for uses in 2010. No, not impressed.

I've been with these for a long time. Not specialist stuff - just regular hard work over a long time - in fact my port is less than 5k. Slow, gradual growth, culminating in getting an email off them a few months ago for breaking into the top 500 contributors earning wise.

No magic tip from me - but reward for hard work will do...

I can't remember off the top of my head if the FTP log in details for all the agencies are the same as the user name and passwords. If so, then security is high on the list, if not, then it doesn't seem to matter much to me?

Alas I'm aging and not a coder....I was hoping one of the younger guns could explain if I'm missing something...

Sounds a great idea. One upload to dropbox and then we use their bandwidth to send to all the agencies.

Only thing that concerns me is the security aspect. Forgive me, but it sounds too good to be true. Given the fact that uploading is a major headache for one and all, am I missing something?

I think the ideas great and you offering here is fantastic - so this has me confused. Would not the forum give this a universal thumbs up, and if not why not?

Lot's of great people on here and a lot of experience. The personal arguments however are tedious and childish. Many a time I've thought of posting something of interest on here, only to decide against it.

Yes, currently it's an open forum and one which is moderated to the best of an individuals ability. Unless extreme personal criticisms and hugely off topic and inappropriate remarks are really carefully policed, this group is in danger of losing credibility going forward.

That would be a shame; if the forum conducted itself more professionally it could be a more active and unified force for change in Microstock.

Well done - yes, that is good for most people. The key element though, is did you have high production costs for your 1800 pics? Keep refining and cutting these down where possible to maximize your profit.

Depends which browser you are using. All browsers have a default country setting which you can change.

You could use a different browser to your usual one for Shutterstock and change the default country setting on this one to the country you want which should work fine. You may also be able to set the language change for a specific site.

I use Firefox - just go to tools > option > content > languages. You can then set your preferred language for a web site.

Exactly. This has changed over the last few years; increasingly so. I work in SEO - I can make a case for a business operating internationally and based in Norway having a .com., but not the vast majority of businesses who are looking for "local" custom..

There is no alleged about it - it is fact. The search locale is primary, but only for searches with a dominant local interpretation.

User location - York
User query - cinema - should display local cinema listings - no one is going to travel to London!

user query - prom dresses - This is not a local query as most people would buy from any shop in the UK online. UK domains should be dominant.

user query - latest Nikon camera - not a local query - people would expect to pay shipping costs and buy from another country if it was cheaper.

Exactly as you have done Sue - if you want to buy local then prom dress shop in York or Nikon camera UK would do the trick...

The domain extension is now a key part of the algorithm for determining search positions. Some of the new domain names are non-location specific, so will be harder to get ranked.

A .com would be fine for a photo agency operating globally or an American taxi service, but not for a German garage, English pub or Scottish shop.

If a search query has local intent, then that countries domain name extension is ranked higher on most occasions.

Bet if I started an Amazon or Ebay shop and started selling drugs online it would soon cause me a problem! These companies should not be able to act with impunity. I'm pretty sure there are legal obligations to running a business...
