Something a bit ironic in all this is that I had also first learned about the pay cut from the email I received from SS about a week ago, but I didn't actually think that much of it or about it in detail at the time (for whatever reason). Maybe I was busy, or maybe I was even distracted by something else at the moment, but somehow I even almost managed to forgot about it.

Then, around the 2nd of June, I decided to check in on my SS sales for the last 5-6 days, which is something I often do. That's when I saw the $0.10 royalties had started coming into my account and that's when it really sunk in. Then, and I don't think it took more than another 30 seconds, before I opened up the settings in my SS account and disabled my portfolio completely. It was as fast as that and it was as if something that I had never even considered before was then suddenly decided for me in the blink of an eye. I didn't really care to hear what might even be the reason behind it. I just simply decided right then and there that me and my pictures are worth more than that. And it was only after I disabled my portfolio that I came here onto this site and realized there was already a big movement about it and that so many other people were also pulling out of SS en masse like I did. I didn't actually think the decision I made so quickly would have been so equally instinctive for so many other people too. That was my underestimation, but it was deeply comforting to see that I was by far not alone in my thinking.

I do realize though there are also a lot of contributors on SS who have much larger portfolios than me, who are heavily invested in their content, and who really rely on the SS income to put food on the table. For those of you I hail, you truly have my sympathies because it's horrible to be pushed into a position where you feel you need to allow yourself to be exploited only because you have no other choice. My heart definitely goes out to you all.

I do hope though that from all of this something great will emerge from the ashes which will allow everyone to regain their dignity and income as image creators in this industry that has been on the downhill for everyone for nearly a decade. Let's see what happens and try and remain positive for the moment. It's only been a few days that things have begun to really percolate and maybe it will start to boil over in a positive way very soon. This to me feels like this could finally be the thing that's big enough to cause the paradigm to shift in a positive way for the valuable creators in an industry where there has been much needed change for so very very long. The revolution has begun!

I disabled everything while they still owe me a payout. I don't have any reason to believe I won't get it and I see no reason to delay disabling. They rightfully owe the money and so they will pay it. Screwing contributors on what they rightfully owe them is not how these large companies operate. It's my right to disable my portfolio at any time and it doesn't mean they are no longer obliged to pay me my royalties if and when I do so. No rules have been broken on my side and I have not violated any terms of the supplier agreement.

I doubt those counters are a reflection of anything in regards to the vast number of contributors now either pulling their portfolios or shutting down their Shutterstench accounts completely. It's probably just a simple running counter that counts the total number of images and videos that have been uploaded since the beginning and it doesn't reflect when images and videos get removed from the archive.

I think over the long term the reality is that Shutterstingy will end up losing about 50% of its contributors from this pressing of the self-destruct button. Greed has often been the cause of demise in many instances throughout world history. This event will likely prove to be another reconfirmation of that narrative. Or a more simplified and philosophical way of looking at it: "Karma is only a b*tch when you are."

The royalty rate target increase of 25% (across all tiers) is by no means a little pin prick to the finger. It is an outright knife in the back!

Keep lowering prices of pictures, keep lowering royalty rates, and keep increasing the size of the collection with anything that anyone is willing to upload. What could possibly be more incentivizing for contributors?

Thank you Franky. Also, is there any way to view only the current month's Statistics without first deleting all the older Statements from all the previous months and then having to restart DM first just to see only the current month's Statistics?

It would also be great for example if there was simply a drop down menu in the Statistics tab where you could select the time period you would like to view as per below and without having to first delete any Statements at all:

Under the heading "Releases" (about the middle of the page). The red triangle is explained.

In short: Getty requires you to enter the Date of Birth of the model in a separate field. (besides it being written on the release PDF as well).
Double-click the model release in the list and enter the Date of Birth for the model.

As for updating to a new version. You can also download from the site:

Hi Franky. I am wondering if there are any plans in the future to add a function to DM which allows the user to increase the thumbnail display size on the Statistics tab?

It would be very useful as the current thumbnail size is very small and sometimes hard to see the thumbnails clearly if you are using a very high resolution monitor where everything is made a lot smaller on the screen. Thanks

Unsplash is an image sharing website where photographers share high quality/res work and it is 100% royalty free. Guess too many contributors got a little too close to the higher royalty rate levels this year for comfort. By nudging up the targets 10% higher next year, they will sleep better at night knowing there is less of a threat of contributors hitting the higher tiers next year. Got to keep making sure Getty's profits continue rising.

Agreed, but the part I can't work out though is how they are going to justify only paying people 20% when all the other micros are paying much higher.

Also, there will be this mass exodus of Exclusives when that happens, as there will be no economic benefit to being exclusive anymore. But maybe that is no longer a relevant concern to them either.

I can see paying Getty content creators 20% when the average download price is over $50 a pop. But when people are now paying mostly subs rates for a download on iStock, and you cut the royalty rate in half for exclusives, it leaves you with a royalty of only a few cents on a download.

Then again, Shutterstock only pays you on average $0.33 on a download too. So I guess it wouldn't be much different. But at least the volume of downloads on a file on Shutterstock is many multiples of what it is on iStock.

Sheesh. That's not cool. The poster just offered some useful information in his/her previous post and then was very polite about asking some questions.

I see many people hijacking posts on this forum all the time and are never polite about it at all in any way. At least this person had some polite etiquette and should be recognized for that.

In fact, within this thread there are already various mentions of other sites and their policies on removing images and portfolios, Alamy, etc. So I don't see the questions of this poster about removing images from Shutterstock to be unrelated to this thread at this point.

Is August 20th conclusively the date after which you wont be able to self deactivate files anymore or is this just an estimated date based upon the announcement?

I looked earlier, before I started this thread, and couldn't find anything in their forum. Also, don't think any buyer would be hunting around forums, looking for answers. They don't have time for that. Would already be buying their content elsewhere by then. And aren't the forums only accessible by contributors anyway?

I also don't use Facebook. And Facebook, is that how a multi-million dollar company sends out important announcements (like site outages) to their customers and contributors? How about an email to everyone notifying them or at least a message on the website (the most obvious place). You can't even make this stuff up.
