General Stock Discussion / Re: SS earnings/imagen

Thank you all for your comments, It was really my fault to not deeply check how much they pay before I started there. It's something I will have to think because as I said some pictures I don't want to sell it on that low price.

I apreciate you share your experience because it help me to better understand how this work. You are always nice trying to help beginners like me, thank you again.

Hello,
Difficult to explain this in english but I will try because I would like to know your opinion.

Until now I've uploaded about 35 images on SS, I have about 40 rejects. The reason for almost all this rejects is "soft focus"...

So far, I've earned 0,25$ to a maximum of 1,88$ per image. Well, the point is that I'm started to think they don't have any respect for us, photographers. I can't believe they pay only 0,25$/ image.

I sell also on Getty and 500px. I'm thinking to close my SS account or to upload only my very low quality work and leave the best for the others.

What do you think? Are you satisfied with your earning there?

So sorry for my english!

You applied to join SS for a year and this is the 1st you looked at how much they pay? It's not by the picture, you need many sales to make money, look at the poll results. Where is 500px and where is SS? If you only upload your low quality work you will get only rejections and low quality returns.

If you are not happy with subs and woriking for low pay, high volume, you are never going to be happy with SS. Less happy with most of the other Microstock. You should leave if it makes you upset. We all work where we pick to be. I am satisfied with my earnings on SS.

I started to sell on SS since 1 month ago. Thank you.

Gabriela, many people avoid SS because of too low pricing. Some people respect their work enought to sell it in other, fair pricing places, SS is volume seller. If you fell you can and want to do mass, tones of photos, feel free to use SS. But if you preffer to take care of your work, control it and sell for higher pricing then 500px wil lbe much better place.

0,25$ is definitely NOT encouraging price for your work. Even 0,40$ is still some joke, I mean it's like giving for free, I think. (Selling mass is another case, don't mix two things for now). That's why I don't upload my better images here.

Ps. Are you from Poland? Your name is familiar :)

You've explained perfectly, I think this is the point, SS is a volume seller. And I do not know how to produce in volume, I dedicate time to each image.

I'm from Argentina and I live in Montreal, Canada:)
Thank you so much and have a great day!

I understand those who do a good margin on a total of pictures sold, but I spend a lot of time with each image to sell them at $ 0.25.

I do not think my pictures are extraordinary but do not think also there value is $ 0.25, for me it's a joke and I don't feel good.

I'll definitely not upload my best photos on SS. Thank you so much for your feed back.

Thank you!

Well, I have already 7 pictures there and I sold 2, I had 0,50$  :-\

I don't really understand how much the charge for each image and which % we have.

I will read more to understand all that...

Thank you very much for your advices, I'm very surprise how realistic and honest you are, I appreciated that. Your advices are precious to me and make me think a lot about the direction to take. It's hard because I love doing photography but also I need more money, so sell more images may be one solution.

I think also for Offset my kind of editing is too much, as I see they prefer not only storytelling pictures but a cleaner style, so is why I'm re editing others pictures to present to them.

My only fear is that I will give them a new link to a portfolio created just for Offset but what if they visit my others web pages? then, they will see again my style so worked..

You are approaching some philosophical questions :) On one side - there is photography that you like , on other is the money and kind of photography that you don't like that much. If you go for money I'm not sure that you will enjoy that much, even though the money brings some joy... But be aware not to sell your soul to the devil...

Anyway, like etudiante said - you are trying to control something that's not controllable. Just make it the way you think is the best now and see what happens. Don't think too much, make that Offset portfolio and then something will tell you how to proceed

Thank you so much!!

instead of worrying over something beyond your control (unless you deactivate your other site temporarily),
perharps if your edited work meant for Offset is much cleaner ,
it could work to your advantage to show you know how to custom edit for each market.

personally, i would advise on just do it; if it works for you, great, if not,
move on. there is still no guarantee that after being accepted you are going to make money worth the trouble.
so, don't worry too far ahead; cross one bridge at a time.

You have much reason, it is better not to put so much pressure! Thank you :)

Thanks Gabriela and ultimagaina. And photos are exclusive or how were they listed?

They are not exclusive ;)

I have a free account with them and I already sell 5 images 175$ each. Two weeks ago I ask to get paid by check and 2 days after I received the check in the mail.

Thank you! I'm processing many images to be "standard" for the next evaluation, I hope this time I will be accepted. I'm preparing some others images for Offset to see also if they accepted me as well.

Hello,
I'm here trying to select "the best" pictures I have to send to SS, some of you mention that I should upload, some portrait, some landscape, some still life and concept.

Well.. the fact is, that I don't have any landscape nice to present, many of "my best" work are concepts.

So, do you believe could be ok a presentation without landscapes or I should wait until I have some to present?

You are very kind to give me many valuable tips. I thought and will make a selection of photos as you say and I will re-postproduct them with a cleaner style as they want. Thank you so much!

I will apply there to see if they accept me. Thank you!

First of all, I want to thank everyone for your precious advices and your time.

Before last time I presented the images to Shutterstock, I took the time to look what kind of images they had in their stock. Then, I presented the most "standard" images I had, and they did not accept me, I think the images I chose were TOO much "standard" for them. It is not easy to know what to present that could be good for them.

What I understand after seeing your comments and also after reading some of the post in the forum is that I have to try to get into Shutterstock if I want to sell more. I'll also apply on Stocksy to see what happen.

I will try to focus in producing some standard but interesting images to present once again to Shutterstock and we will see what happen. I will let you know sure.

Thank you so much again, I really appreciated each comment!
(Sorry for my english)

I don't have much to add to the above advice, but I wanted to say how lovely your images are.

I'm not at all surprised that SS turned you down (I think they're daft, but I don't set their photo editing guidelines), but I'm fairly sure that you could process a subset of your images slightly differently to get the cleaner look SS reviewers will want to see and get yourself accepted.

I also agree that applying at Stocksy - which, if you're accepted, means image exclusivity - is a good idea. You could then take an approach similar to Sean Locke's, where some of your work goes to Stocksy (I think all his new shoots, but perhaps he can comment) and the rest goes to a number of other micros - and Shutterstock is the big earner. In Sean's case he has several years of earlier stock work that is at SS and other agencies, as well as selling direct.

With a dual approach you won't tear your hair out trying to deal with getting SS to accept your lovelier work but you can process things you think will be a fit for them in a way that you know will have a high chance of passing inspection. Some photographers have said good things about Westend61 as a macro agency that might also be a fit for your work.

Thank you so much for words about my photos Jo Ann! I didn't know the other agency, I will look at it. I will write below for everyone. Thank you for your advice!

Or maybe just stay away from microstock, where they will make you shoot in a style you don't want in order to fit their agenda (or you'll waste a ton of time uploading stuff just to have it rejected).   I think if you have your own style it's best not to compromise. Later on, you might not want people to judge you as a microstock shooter (we're not the most highly regarded photographers, you know) you might want to be classed as an art photographer.

I would not feel good producing images which I do not feel happy to see them . But I also think that the more artistic images I can make it just for me or my website and other images without compromising my style could occur in the agencies.

I'm starting on this, I don't know what will happen, at this time I would really like to sell my work. Sorry for my english. Thank you so much for your advise!

Gabriela, maybe this is a good advice, maybe not
(Other forum's users will confirm or not)

When you apply for Shutterstock it is better to give them what they consider as "normal" images, I mean images with very standard exposure, very standard white balance, very standard tonality, very standard etc (and no noise at all) - Give them what they want

Seeing your photos it is understandable that you can produce good images as they want.

So, my advice is: let your style aside for the photos you will submit to the Shutterstock exam.
Then, once accepted (and you will be), they will probably accept your "styled" images without problem.
And, if you put a note to the inspector explaining that the photos are "effected" you will get an higher rate of acceptance I think - it works for me and other, so it should work for you too ;)

Edit: Oops, i just see now that mystock wrote a similar post to mine

Thank you so much for your advise! I'm conscious my photos are not suitable for everyone and less to all agencies. I have to present definitely standard images if I want to get accepted. I have a question for you, what means "effected" for them?

Gabriela, your photos are beautiful and would sell, on Shutterstock too.

But first you need to pass the test. So avoid using filters and try to obtain 10 perfectly lit, perfectly boring, ordinary stock pictures just for the test: that's what they want.

Then - once you're in - mantain your style. Half batches will still be rejected for lighting, but the half accepted will sell a lot.

Thank you very much for your kind words about my photos! It is a good point to present them standard photos to see if they accept me that way. Thank you so much!
