Off Topic / Book Recommendations
« on: June 16, 2012, 15:51 »
How can I be further off topic? :)

Please check my latest experiment, book recommendations site http://dozen.softover.com

From the front page:

How To Get Best Recommendations:

  • Sign in with Twitter.
  • Find several books youve read recently and rate them.
  • After each rating your recommendations are refreshed. Check the list to see if you can rate something, or would like to drop some books from your recommended dozen.
  • Rinse and repeat.
  • Return often, your recommendations may improve in time based on other user ratings.
  • Spread the word. More users and more ratings mean better recommendations for everybody!

General - Top Sites / Funny stats - Drunk Inspector Ratio
« on: April 08, 2011, 13:57 »
http://microstock.geneimages.com/dir (not really "big 4", but "bigger 5")

The calculation is done in assumption that absolutely drunk inspector makes absolutely random acceptance decision.

For the top 5 stock sites, we calculate how many images that have aggregate earnings of more than $5 were rejected, and how many images of the same amount of worst images (no-sellers for longest time) were accepted

Results are compared with random decision - 1/2 error rate

Results:

Stock               DIR
123rf             96%
iStockPhoto        61%
Dreamstime       41%
ShutterStock      38%
Fotolia               32%

Off Topic / Wanna use free WiFi?
« on: November 10, 2010, 00:50 »
Old news, but in case you missed it - http://www.informationweek.com/news/security/client/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=228000481&cid=RSSfeed_IWK_All

In a nut shell - do not login anywhere using public WiFi (gmail is one of exceptions), it became very easy to get your access (and do not be fooled by secure login page, it is not enough)

P.S. Just checked top 4 - none of tools that are supposed to help with the problem will help

Microstock Charts / To save or not to save
« on: June 24, 2010, 23:36 »
Either I am doing something wrong (e.g. not using proper account, but I tried all I have), or my account data is lost. Is everybody else fine?

Shutterstock.com / Reviewers allergy or global trend?
« on: June 24, 2010, 23:09 »
For the last month my approval rate dropped at SS to 20% - I am submitting batches of 5, and pretty consistently get approved only 1. Approval rate on IS did not change. Is it me that cannot fit SS composition and lighting standards (majority of rejects), or others see something similar too?

iStockPhoto.com / License for book usage
« on: May 17, 2010, 15:19 »
After checking IS licenses, looks like  book usage of the picture does not require extended license if book has less than 500K copies (probably majority of books)

Is there any way to find out amount of copies printed?

Looks like my backup site ( ;) ) stopped understanding keywords (reads only first one)...

123RF / No watermarks?
« on: March 10, 2010, 22:47 »
Yet another 123 development? Images have practically no watermarks (only something tiny in the corner)

Edit: they are back, looks like temporary glitch

Microstock Services / CSPA
« on: February 06, 2010, 20:42 »
Just stumbled on a link
CSPA - Contributors Stock Photo Software  http://www.cspa.tuulimaa.com

Screenshots look interesting, but I am cautous installing something unknown.

Did/does anybody use it? Does it worth time for installation (or even $29)?

Thanks!

Just to make sure - I have no relation to this program, and it does not offer discounts for posting :)

(O-ops, sorry for posting it in Services)

Software - General / Lightroom 3 question
« on: January 30, 2010, 12:55 »
I decided to try LR3 beta. Overall impression - very good, but I am stuck with one problem. It successfully copied manually added IPTC data, but all the camera info is lost.

Question: is it that I am doing something wrong, or it is LR3 bug, or common LR problem?

And question unrelated to LR: will I have any problems with empty-info (camera, date, etc.) photo uploads to any sites?

Just some words of caution

If you submit to CanStockPhoto, your images are available on Fotosearch
Fotosearch images are sold by subscription at StockPhotoPro

If you close your CanStockPhoto account, images disappear from Fotosearch, but not from SPP - and there are _no means_ to delete from there, other than manually searching for all images and requesting deletion individually.

Update: please see later post, problem has been resolved. Sorry for using MSG as a muscle, but it works :)

General Stock Discussion / ImageCatalog - one more is gone
« on: November 30, 2009, 11:10 »
http://imagecatalog.com :

"Image Catalog is Now Closed

Thank you to all the members who have supported us over the years! "

yet another ~$50 minus....

(I was not sure what section I could use for this post)

Zymmetrical.com / Zym was right!
« on: November 24, 2009, 23:37 »
Today I found that my account just disappeared from Zym. Cannot find any images, login gives "You are not currently authorized to login to this site."

Interesting thing that I tried to go there to make my mind - upload more or close the account. Looks like they nicely helped me to make the decision...

New Sites - General / StockPhotoPro - WTH?
« on: November 12, 2009, 19:31 »
Just found a lot of my images on their site. As they are sold by subscription only, it is quite possible they are there legally (e.g. partnership with some other site, though I could not find any exact match).

What bothers me - their copyright info. All my images say
Photographer Fotosearch Subscription

I know that there are a lot of people in this group who are pretty fluent in related laws. So my question is: even if the usage is legal, isn't such copyright notice a violation?

Microstock Services / StatsMicro.com
« on: April 14, 2009, 10:23 »
At first - a little history

I just wanted to be able to answer several questions about my portfolio:
- What are my best sellers across several sites?
- What decent earners at IS never got to SS (or vice-versa, or on other sites)?
- From early microstock days (or maybe not only early ones : ) I have a lot of "junk" sitting in my portfolios. How to find them, taking in account that some photos could be just overlooked by customers at particular site

I am too lazy to track manually  necessary for answering these questions stats, and none of existing tools could help.
Being a software developer in my "main" life, answer was obvious - develop my own tool. And there came additional "requirements" that lead to solution that potentially can benefit others:
- I want to be able to access this information from any computer, so it has to be web-based
- I do not have extra money to pay for hosting - I will be limited to free hosting/platforms, but this also means that I cannot store (or even log) _any_ sensitive information on the server, mainly - passwords. I.e. the solution has to be secure (for me, and I am pretty paranoiac).

After spending some time working on this I think I am ready to add couple beta (in reality - alpha) users to the site - at least to see if it should remain my personal tool or more people can benefit from it.
Sorry, for now - only couple, and with specific requirements. They have to be:
- willing to help, not just use the tool
- having _small_ portfolios (couple hundreds) across IS, SS, DT and StockXpert

If you are interested - please PM me with links to your portfolios on these sites (only for size verification), and I'll white-list selected one (or two, or three - we'll see how service can handle the load) at http://statsmicro.com

General Stock Discussion / US microstock visitors data
« on: September 06, 2008, 12:53 »
I've updated microstock traffic data and ranks at http://rollingportfolio.com/ for August. As I am using compete.com as a source, it is limited to US traffic.
Interesting thing - first time none of top 14 changed rank comparing to July

General Stock Discussion / Secure Login
« on: May 10, 2008, 20:09 »
Question to everybody: aint you afraid using sites with insecure login? Looked in the list (do not check all sites, but ~ top 15), and only 5 were secure: IS, SS, FT, Zym and - surprise - ImageCatalog. Looks like for myself I have manageable list of sites to work with :) ...

P.S. Checked remaining - only moodboard can be added to safe list

New Sites - General / What is ImageCatalogue?
« on: April 24, 2008, 11:07 »
Poll refers to ImageCatalogue.com, but it is just parked domain, not a working site. Shouldn't it be ImageCatalog and http://imagecatalog.com?

LuckyOliver.com / Comment on a portfolio above you
« on: March 09, 2008, 02:11 »
As comments are the way ti get anything from LO, we can play the old game and have some fun of it:
Suggested rules - go to a portfolio of a last poster, choose an image that you like and seems underrated, and comment on it. If you want to participate, please start nit with mine, but with

Shutterstock.com / Flashback of "no flowers"?
« on: March 06, 2008, 11:17 »
Just a little bit of curiosity. Couple of my flower shots somehow got in with original submission. 3-4 from the same set (and quality) were later rejected because of "we do not need this". But... First two continue to get couple downloads per day. Is this just a customer hunger for no/little new flower shots?
I see the same policy on several sites, does it mean that soon nobody will be able to get flower picture that is not couple years old?
