Newbie Discussion / Re: Stock footage newbie
« on: April 01, 2021, 13:24 »
Was that a joke or are you serious? You recommend SS and IS, two of the lowest paying video sites on the planet.
If ss and is make 25-30% of income in big portfolio why give it up?
Also, there's big community of istock exclusive authors who live from istock and, I'm sure, they wouldnt agree with your position about their only stock agency 🙂
I also can recommend storyblocks. But I'm not sure if they accept new contributors.

This is excellent advice! Although I've never seen a professional telling someone to ignore advice from another professional.
It's not professional to give up part of income. But he gives advice about this 🙂 When you live from this, you should maximize income. Istock and ss make weighty part of my income and some people, that I know.
If I recall it right, maybe it was you, who wrote something like this in another topic: "until agency gives at least 1$ why give it up"?

Pond5 and Adobe are kings of the game in the footage department. Forget Istock and SS pennies for clips and getting worse by the day. You will only devaluate your work and clap to your abusers.

Videohive you can dictate your prices and commission is not bad.
Don't listen to advices like this.
If you want to be professional look what professionals do. All of top authors/studios upload to ss and istock

Hi there i'm a fellow newbie on the footage front. What quality do you upload, i've tried a ProRes file but a few seconds file is huge so wanted to know if that should be the standard or can i lower the quality a bit?
Prores if you shoot 10 bit or raw. H264 if you shoot 8bit.
Some agencies (like artgrid) accept only ProresHQ. Pond5 has an option for additional raw or non graded Prores. So it's up to you. But prores is preferred.

With 2021 mostly being dismal in stock earnings so far what positive steps have you taken to maintain or grow earnings? Some options I've seen people take

1. cut out low paying agencies completely
2. This is the new normal, make more stuff, put it on all agencies
3. Started something new like book covers - brutallyhonestmicrostock.com style
4. Focussed more on inperson shooting gigs
5. Left this side of the business entirely
6. Go to aggregators like blackbox, wirestock etc

Hopefully some postive way forward stuff

Aggregators do not increase your income, but decrease (taking their % cut for nothing)

Dear all,

I am new or very very new to stock footage, Could you please suggest 1 site for stock?
Did some photos earlier on is, ss, fotolia, dt and 123rf.
Closed account on ss and closing on 123rf.

In my mind is Storyblock or Pond 5, anyone of you experienced seniors could aide some light? Thank you.

Regards
SK
If you want only 1 go istock exclusive. They have their upload/submit/keywording tool (deepmeta) and this will be easier.
But if you want go professional and earn more   upload to major 5: shutterstock, adobe, pond5, istock, videohive. You can also try storyblocks. But, as I know, they don't accept new contributors. And, from professional perspective, don't accept scam advises about blackbox or wirestock. Better go iStock exclusive if you want easier way.

I'm just curious what mic are you using?

Shutterstock.com / Re: Very low video sales
« on: February 04, 2021, 14:51 »
Hi Guys,

Since January, I keep getting very, very low comissions video sales (less than 1$) on SS. Last year it was normal, with 10$+ for the video. Is there any explenation for that? I know I am reduced to Level 1, but still, less than 1$ for a footage is not what I was used to previous years. Something has changes, did I miss something?

Thanks

Good morning. Read news.

Hi,

when I go shooting wildlife (deer especially) I also like to shoot some video. Does anybody know, is there such thing as a 3 axis video stabilizer os something similar that you can put for example between tripod and camera so it would reduce camera shakes or any similar equipment.

Like this video https://www.shutterstock.com/video/clip-29498191-wild-roe-deer-grazing-field  it's pretty shaky, I used only tripod andlens stabilization, I'd like to reduce those shakes.

Thanks
For telephoto you need tripod with video head for weight of your camera+lens+accessories+little more.
For most dslr/mirrorless good/cheap tripod for travel/hiking will be something like Manfrotto 190 + Manfrotto 502 videohead

General Stock Discussion / Re: How do you keyword?
« on: October 11, 2020, 01:25 »
Easiest way to keyword - use stocksubmitter (or similar) keywording tools (most of them are based on shutterstock keywording engine). You write keywords directly to metadata and can keyword tons of images in seconds.
When you have some stable income - just outsource it to professionals.

How this can happen (my theory):
They buy many different pics like this. Then they open model release and add these pics to ads, which will see people in area from model release. For example you are 25 y.o. man from texas and they show their ad with your photo to all texas people in that age range (20-30s).
But it's too tricky 🙂
Most likely they just show it to many people like someone mentioned before.

None of the agencies make model releases available to buyers. They will confirm that there is one on file, but anything more would be totally unprofessional.
I see. That's good. Always thought they receive MR with materials they buy.

Using the shutter speed with double value of the frame rate is necessary for stock videography always? If i shoot a video outdoors without a Nd filter everything is so overexposed and i need to increase shutter speed. Can i use these type of videos and sell in Pond5?
No, it's not necessary.
Most buyers don't care about your motion blur. They watch for story in frame, good light, cute model etc.
And shutter x2 fps isn't a rule in movies also. When you shoot sports or fast motion you can make faster shutter. When you shoot something almost still -- you can make shutter slow. There's some scenes in movies shot with very slow shutter (like 24fps with 1/24 shutter) to make dreamy look.
But for stock footage sales that doesn't matter. Just shoot good light, color and catchy story in frame. It's much more important.

Payoneer / Re: Payoneer- Wirecard.
« on: June 27, 2020, 13:30 »
I gather there are problems with using Payoneer cards thanks to dodgy accounting, it seems, at Wirecard.

Does this matter to us?
Is it best to use Paypal for now, where possible?
Even just for Payoneer accounts where money gets sent directly into bank accounts?
Does anybody understand all this?
In some countries you can't use PayPal to receive payments (only to pay), so Payoneer with it's 2% commission is (was?) best option to receive money from stock agencies.

Well i'm also suspicious about the claim that they are getting more, but even telling some numbers won't really make justice in this question, as video commisions are all over the place at SS anyways. In my experience a HD sale can yield anything from 1.5 USD to 140. Maybe most of them seem to be in the 18-25 range with all kind off different numbers but really it seems to me that it can be anything

And Shutterstock doesn't even show if a sale was HD or 4K. I just know that i've had commissions over 100USD even for clips that are not available in 4k
For 4K you receive around 54$ at shutterstock.
For hd/4K you can receive from 1,5$ and up to 300$
Bb is for newbies that dont want to bother themselves.
If you work professionally you wouldnt pay someone additional 15% and you want control. Thats all.

15
Like it or not you earn more on BB through SS then you do on SS alone they are just not sharing that! Feel free to ask others as well.
How you earn more if commissions are fixed and you pay additional 15%? How much exactly you receive for hd and for 4K?

16
I can't answer the tax questions, BB gets a higher % than you on your own and passes that along to you so you get more per sale on ShuttterStock
Here's an answer about your affirmation from shutterstock (received today):
"Hi,
Please be informed that earnings for all Shutterstock account is same. Earnings of contents completely depends up to the license and subscription that was used for each download, and your earnings tier."

17
Love the video!

However my personal favorite is blackboxglobal.

No one of professional stock contributors will throw away 15% of their commission to give it to black box.
If you use tools like stocksubmitter its same easy, but you have your 15% with you.
Bb only for nobrainers, because its easier.

Hello. I don't know how to translate this into English but it's something like model release, but "rights release" or "rights transfer" in which he accepts that all rights for his creative work for some period (for example day/time he shoots for you) goes to you.
