Alamy.com / Re: My earnings on Alamy
« on: September 01, 2011, 16:01 »
@click_click  Re your: "Have you ever checked out the "Net revenue" section?  http://www.alamy.com/net-revenue.asp"

What a great link for checking one's Alamy sales info - clear, detailed, and all in one spot - thanks!

152
I contacted SS yesterday, gave them the URL - mostly to give them a head's up about the site. (When on SS, that version had an EL a couple of years ago.)

It also sold on DT, but I think they only want notice about active images misused with DT watermark still on them.

(Of course, I'd be beyond amazed if the site had bought EL, and even if they did, an EL would not give them right to have image that size online, let alone anything else they might be doing with it.)

So DMCA seems only other option left.

I wouldn't bother contacting them, go straight to the DMCA and contacting the agency.
No point engaging with these people.

153
Thanks for the suggestion.  Plus, though I had parentheses around the dots (.) in URL to stop it from being a clickable link, (dot) makes the URL less obvious.
I've changed it to that above - it's okay if someone doesn't get how to interpret it.

However it should be typed, it would be good if you didn't contribute to the thieves' search engine ranking by typing it exact. In other words, change it to fotoobol(dot)extra(dot).ua/ and then explain to replace the word dot with a period. That way, they don't get free "publicity". Just a suggestion.

154
sincere thanks click_click   :)

corrected: fotooboi(dot)extra(dot)ua/...
Despite its, uhm, hilariously inappropriate tone, it turns out the other poster's comment was helpful, since it made me take another look at what I typed, and now I'll go back & fix it on original post. too. (Oh, and I originally identified it as Czech since, though I could be remembering it incorrectly, the language translator I used for the site referred to that language.)

155
The site fotooboi(dot)extra(dot)ua/.... has images, including at least one of mine, displayed online at 1300px X 870px.   (found it through images.google.com)

This wallpaper site claims to sell images on paper, film, canvas, and they appear to be easily downloadable at 1300x870 for free, though I'm not going to try.

For a Long time, I have NOT had the displayed version of the image available for sale ANYWHERE,
so there's no way they could be planning to pay me if they sell my image. (Briefly, an improved RF version is on sale on macro, so I am particularly concerned about this.)

How does one get this site to stop displaying image, especially at 1300px x 870px (and apparently offering it for sale - though the info on their site about what's for 'sale' isn't clear to me)?

(edited to correct URL related info)

Whether or not one can sell the same image as RM one place and RF another, I strongly urge you not to.
The odds of you regretting that are infinitely less than if you offer bi-licensed images.

i saw photoshelter is paid monthly, how is it different to something like ktools that you paid one time fee? i think ktools is a software that you install on your host?

how about photoshelter? if one day i decide to leave photoshelter..will i be able to 'transfer' the site to my own host?

I'm not familiar with ktools, but it sounds Very different from photoshelter. Photoshelter Pro is generally similar to Smugmug Pro, for example.

I paid for a year, for bigger discount; plus, I figured it was unlikely I'd put time in to set up my site, learn the ins and outs, and then leave in a few months to start somewhere else from scratch.

The fee covers a certain amount of storage (maybe 30 GB; can't check now), and over that you pay an extra charge each month. I like that you can upload jpgs, tiff, Raw.

You can use a website address created through photoshelter, or use your own domain name.

There are preset (customizable to a point) themes or you can set up site from scratch. I use one of their themes, and one of these days I should make use of the two blank pages they include to do whatever with. I like how the wordpress integration for blog lets you  include your photoshelter photos without actually having to upload/resize them for blog.

Don't think you'd be able to take your site with you, if/when you leave, especially if you use one of their themes.

You can  try it for one month for one dollar.  (PM me, if you wish, to see my site, which wasn't too hard to set up.)  Ann

I'm also interested.
Also wondering if they're exclusive - before I ask them directly, anyone here know?

Views, zooms, and sales statistics are all based on the time period shown right above them. Default covers a month, and you can adjust parameters to show more or less time.

(BTW, I had up to a few dozen mostly-RM photos on Alamy for 8 months-to-a-year before first sale. That motivated me to start uploading more. Now, almost a year after that, I have a few more sales & between 200-300 online. It's a nice outlet for photos in addition to direct client work, and starting around end of last year have been deleting from, rather than adding to, my 2 micro ports.)

Also note that you won't even get a payout until you've made $250.

Trying to understand what Alamy's statistics mean is a topic in itself. So far I've gotten a couple hundred "views" but exactly 1 "zoom", which happened very early.  Weirdly, the number of "views" sometimes rolls backwards, i.e. dips lower.  I suspect these statistics are either erroneous or misleading.

I'm starting to feel dumb for having spent time uploading to Alamy and I've quit doing it.   Maybe it's not a worthwhile place for small time guys I like me.

I agree with RacePhoto about not wanting to compete with oneself.
A while back, I was speaking with someone who had a lovely conceptual image zoomed on Alamy and then downloaded on a micro. Though the 2 events might have been unrelated, the micro sale was not happy news.

wordplanet,
The whole caption/title/heading/description thing - yikes! - Each time I think I totally figured it out, I find out I'm totally wrong.
I don't see where info I put in description shows up ever/anywhere, except when I'm look at the ITPC box I've entered it in.

Then I realize if I go (in admin) to Gallery and enter info in Caption, it will show up next to image online as expected/hoped. That's good step forward.
So then I put most of the info in the captions, but the Slideshow captions become a mess because there's  too much info to fit in across the top line & text overlapped.

From the main online gallery (the one that had dozens of photos) I ended up removing all but 4, and I'll continue to work on getting info the way I want & expect to see it more consistently.
I hope at least some of this is making sense.  smiles - Ann

P.S. I just tweaked the site, and changed URL to my name with hyphen between the words:
firstname-lastname.com

wordplanet - so you have a D700, too! (Reviews of D3x indicate that D700 is better for photojournalism, so I'm waiting to see what D4 will be and cost  :D)

Thanks for asking for URL of my photoshelter home - will do that as soon as I'm sure that site is doing what I think it is. I've been focusing on one gallery of a few dozen photos and a few galleries of 1 to a handful of photos, so I can learn, try out how things work, so I don't have too much to undo when I mess up.

I'm still getting a few basic things straight (like difference between deleting photo from archives and from a specific gallery, and how changing photo descrip one place (archive, gallery) doesn't change it in another. It's both a help and hindrance that I've had my smugmug site for years.

For ex, in smugmug there's more of a flow between places to do administrative things and things any visitor can do, esp on public galleries of your site.

Whereas, on PhotoShelter - which gives account holder a greater range of options and features for RF and RM licensing... - there seem to basically be 2 different sites - my site - where I can't do anything more on it than any visitor can (on the public galleries), and the Photoshelter Account site, where I upload, make folders, galleries, prices, descriptions.
***If I'm wrong about this, I hope someone tells me.***

Wordplanet, I'm thrilled I saw your post, not only because, as of 5/12, PhotoSelter hosts my new domain (for photojournalism and fine art) but also because of your Chappaqua editorial photos.

When I read Hillary Clinton's quote on mag cover about how she wished all children could go to school like those on Chappaqua, I had the biggest smile.

Chappaqua's Bell Middle School is where I did my student teaching in Secondary English, and what an amazing school and community!  A fellow student teacher and I were lucky enough to be guests at a home along a stream, and we could walk to and from school. Very fond memories.

The only editorials I've had of HC were ones I took when my daughters and I went to her NYC events during Presidential race. One of my dreams is to photograph her with my Nikon D700, rather than the P&S security allowed back then.

Your photos are fabulous.  Smiles - Ann

Alamy.com / Re: Alamy is seeing some action!
« on: May 13, 2011, 16:50 »
I think this is sort of right:

"All of Alamy" does not show all the sales - it's the sales that are made "right after" a client does a Search, Zooms on one of the images appearing directly on the search page, and then directly buys that image.  (In fact, it may show even fewer than that, if it shows such sales only from the select customers whose Zooms are tracked and counted in contributors' stats.)

If customer does not do search & zoom to find the image, or if s/he puts image in lightbox & buys it later, it doesn't show up in "All of Alamy."

BTW, some data (zooms) was misplaced periodically for the past month or so, though they may have been retrieved by now. Also, though I haven't checked lately, a couple of days ago they posted in forum that they weren't updating  Measures after 5/11 until they fixed some software problem.

Does anyone have some insight in to what the "All of Alamy" feature is really showing us?

I ask because if this really is "All There Is"...things look pretty dismal. It would lead me to believe there were only 600-1000 sales on Almay in the last month.

I also did a search for "business", and stretch my search back for a year. The phrase "Business People" floated to the top, with just 4 sales. Fours sales, and 28k views in an entire year!!!! The same term on Shutterstock I would guess would generated I suspect 10's of thousands of sales, of not 100's of thousands.

Thoughts?

It was a nice surprise for me... keeps me at 100% acceptance rate at least. I thought I had my first failure there.

Alamy's 4/19 blog about holiday QC time gave a head's up about extended QC times:
 http://www.alamy.com/Blog/contributor/archive/2011/04/19/4868.aspx

My batches starting with a 4/22 submission passed 5/5 (and based on A forum posts, new QC results started earlier that week), and then my new submit passed hours later, so it looks like once the holidays (Easter, Royal Wedding...) passed they caught up with QC fast.

Hi ShadySue -

I think below is not accurate - does anyone have definitive answer? If it IS accurate, then I need  to get some pics off FB  :o

"As for facebook, when you upload an image, you represent and warrant that you have full rights to the image, and are in a position to grant facebook a perpetual Royalty Free license...."

I can't see it as FUD to suggest that their future actions will likely follow a similar path.

Can someone enlighten me as to what FUD is?

Hugo's mis-addressed postcard just returned today, but I sent out correct one a couple of days after it, so all should be good.

now I know a bit more Dutch, thanks to explanation on card
post Herstel/Retour: Onvolledig/foutief adres/postcode - Incorrect address

Hmmm. Opla has a very valid point. I'm afraid my postal code is incorrect. it should be 2281GK (And not 2032KA). Don't know what got into me when I passed Race that info, nor why I didnt' notice that earlier...

I'm very sorry about that. Hope I'm still on time.

My Correct postal code is 2281GK

Cheers,

Hugo

Lovely idea to send it of first RM image! "My First" is such a great theme.
Have fond memories of my 1st direct-client RM (a very honest animal shelter that contacted me after seeing it online) and macro RM (store window - Alamy).

The only time I "repeat" keywords is when I want them to appear next to different words or in different order, or with variety of punctuation, such as (to be extreme):

Mohonk Mountain House Lake Mohonk Tower [Mohonk Mountain House] [Lake Mohonk] [Mohonk Tower] "Mohonk Mountain House"  "Lake Mohonk" "Mohonk Tower" Mohonk Lake "Mohonk Mountain" "Mount Mohonk" ....

Scrambled eggs fried eggs fried egg ....
