Photography can be as exciting or boring as any other job.

I often find my shoots (and especially post processing!) boring. But sometimes a shoot can be very exciting, interesting, inspiring, funny etc.
I'd still say most of my shoots are boring routine work, 1 percent inspiration, 99 percent perspiration.

Of course it would be more interesting to shoot bikini models under palm trees, but I guess even that would become boring after some time...

(Photography is still one of the best jobs there is! :))

This blog post http://blogs.suntimes.com/ebert/2011/01/post_4.html written by Roger Ebert pretty much sums up what I think about 3D. Of course it's only about film/movies, but some of it applies even still images.

123RF / Re: New feature on 123rf? What's this?
« on: June 27, 2011, 05:25 »
I really can't understand why most of microstock sites think that the word "editorial" equals "newsworthy".

There is a huge market for "non-newsworthy" editorial images, for example unreleased travel photography, new products in-use, etc., but it's very difficult to get images like that accepted at many sites.

Rejecting non-newsworthy editorial images is not a very bright idea and creates a huge gap in the collection.

And If I ever happen to shoot the most newsworthy image of the year, I won't be uploading it to microstock sites...

I might have missed a comment you made, but thanks.  I'm shooting every day, but mostly first thing in the morning and then some wildlife stuff in the afternoon.  Sun's not setting till 8:30 or so my time so I'm not getting too much at night.

Wildlife doesnt (generally) sell well. If you are going to succeed in microstock, you can't just shoot what you like, you have to shoot what sells!

(Oh, I saw someone already pointed out that for you. But they are right; an hour spent on wildlife is an hour less spent on something that will sell)

Your studio is quite small, best suited for tabletop work. And maybe headshots.

In addition to stands, you could use some space saving solutions as

Auto Poles:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/560207-REG/Manfrotto_432_3_7BSET_432_3_7B_Deluxe_Autopole_2.html
(Autopole is something you put between floor and ceiling and you can fasten lighting gear etc. to them with
for example with super clamps http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/371927-REG/Impact_KCP_700B26_Super_Clamp_with_Standard.html ) You can put autopoles closer to walls than you can go
with regular stands.

wall booms:

How do I delete images at 123rf? I'm not deleting my whole portfolio, just a few images but I can't find a "delete" checkbox or button anywhere...?

Sorry to say, but I think rejection was justified...

He doesn't look like crying to me. he does not look depressed (He is smiling!). Can't see any signs of violence, pain or illness either... Maybe there is a tear in his eye, but the facial expression and body language looks pretty positive to me.

Try persuading your employers to close their account and open one at Shutterstock or Dreamstime. That should keep Lobo/iStock happy :)

Maybe I am missing something but I cant see any point at all in supplying editorials to any Micro agency.

They do sell, If I get some non-newsworthy images online (they will sell for a longer time), but it's such a struggle...

The problem at Shutterstock is that they don't understand what an editorial image is: they want "newsworthy" photos. And at IS they nitpick about the caption, file creation date etc. etc.

- Delete every image with 0 downloads after 3 years.
- Delete every image with 1 download after 4 years.
- Delete every image with less than 5 downloads after 5 years.
- ...... with less tha 10 downloads after 6 years.

Those figures seems about right. Maybe I would remove the last row (10dl/6 yrs.), but otherwise your system does sound reasonable.

Now I have a new dilemma. I use Capture One Pro, and it seems as a default to new dates on "date created" and "date modified" when I make JPG's from my Fuji X100 raw-files. If I state the real date on the upload page, my image gets rejected.

the real question to iStock would be: WHY DO WE NEED TO FILL IN THE DATE IN THE CAPTION AND IN A BOX ON THE UPLOAD PAGE IF IT'S THE FILE'S EXIF IS THE THING THAT REALLY MATTERS? AND WHAT IF MY CAMERA'S TIME AND DATE WAS SET WRONG???

Sorry about the shouting, I just had to.

Seriously, any professional in any market place has to know what his customer is looking for and go and meet THAT demand, not the demand he feels that the customer SHOULD have and, make no mistake, in this case Dreamstime is the customer and calls the shots whatever any of us think of that.

No, Dreamstime is NOT "the customer", they aren't the ones paying for the images. They only have a somewhat warped idea about what the customers want (for example rejecting some perfectly good shots that sell like hotcakes on other sites).

They don't even seem to understand why someone would want to choose between a vertical or horizontal image of the same subject.

667
I really cannot understand why they don't weed some of the crap out automatically. In Shutterstock's case they could throw out everything that hasn't been sold in the last three years. We are propably talking about a couple of millions of images.

And yes, they should let the new good stuff in to see if it sells.

Adobe Stock / Re: fotolia is sinking
« on: June 10, 2011, 05:40 »
My Fotolia income has dropped from 300 to 400 dollars/mo to 150....200. This month has the potential to be the weakest month since January 2009.

So sad. It seems my avatar predicted even this...

I have sometimes had an assistant that knows about photography. It's really great to have someone you can tell to move/adjust lighting without needing to explain it three times.

You can always tell the assistant to keep an eye on clothing/hair/jewellery, so none of those gets into a wrong position during shooting. (The big guys of course have their own hairdresser and stylist to do that)

Which just goes to show that we are all taught our own versions of history.

So what do you think German and USSR did between 1941-1944? Played chess and drank vodka?
The real turning point in defeating germany was Stalingrad in 1943, not what happened after d-day, even if people from US seem to think that way very often. I really suggest to read some books written by others than US writers. Or even Wikipedia.

(Okay, this is getting seriously off-topic :))

Thank God we never ended up with Hitler's vision of a united, German-led Europe!

Yes. Now instead we live in a united, German-led European Union :D

I have noticed that using a polarizer to get a bright blue sky often seems to cause noise. I don't know why, I think it's like the blue pixels in the sensor gets overload.... Maybe the bright blue sky contains no red or green information and that messes the bayer interpolation. Or something like that...

673
but also all the negative publicity that would force them to oblige.

Sorry to dissappoint you, but I don't think IS cares for negative publicity.

674
I can't really find the targets motivating in any way. I'm already at 17% this year (I have about 13,000 redeemed credits), and I don't think I could make it to 18% even if I uploaded like h*ll (I would need 27,000 redeemed credits more, the would mean doubling my income for the rest of the year - not going to happen). The gap between 12,500 and 40,000 is just HUGE.

675
I'm getting really frustrated. I was on a trip in Europe, and got a very nice sunny weather for shooting travel pictures. Blue skies and vibrant colors, just the way clients want 'em.

But when I submitted a batch of images to SS, they rejected about two thirds of them, because they didn't like my lighting. They didn't propably like the dark shadows caused by the sun. Looking at some crap they have accepted they seem to prefer their travel pics shot on an overcast day. Dull and grey, that's how they like them.

Grrrr!
