Nikon / D200 battery instability
« on: April 19, 2014, 09:47 »
I have this strange problem for a while with each D200 battery that is fully charged only showing one segment charged after briefly showing fully charged. 2 different batteries tested to be fully charged. It seems to be the camera that isn't picking up the power. Initially I had to put a small piece of paper between the battery and closing door to get a decent connection but now that no longer works. I have checked all the electrical points and they are all clean.

What could this be ?

Nikon / Spot on inside of lens
« on: April 18, 2014, 13:19 »
I have a Nikon D200 kit lens that has been fine for years. However, I have noticed a black spot on all my latest images. Looking at the lens I can see a round spot/dust mark which is actually behind the glass which is impossible to get to. It is so obvious as it shows on every shot so for now I can use lightroom to remove it. How on earth can it get behind sealed glass ? I would have thought impossible. Is there any way I can remove this myself or take apart and clean ?

Cameras / Lenses / Good all rounder for stills and HD video
« on: April 02, 2014, 10:18 »
I have been looking into getting a stills camera that shoots HD video so I can produce footage stock media. Currently I still use a Nikon D200 with the 18-70 kits lens which does me fine at a push.

I have been thinking of the Panasonic GH3 as it is amazing for video and pretty good for stills. I have heard mixed reviews about it being a serious still camera but as I use a D200 perhaps it will be an improvement ? There is also the Canon 600D which does both but the video quality is troubled with moire as are most canons.

If anyone can enlighten me a bit more I will be grateful.

Cheers.

Photography Equipment / SLR for HD Video
« on: February 17, 2014, 04:54 »
I am in a bit of a dilemma as I have a Nikon D200 which I have always been happy with. I would like to get into shooting stock footage and would appreciate any advice on a good SLR that can shoot video. Even better would be to use my D200 kit lens on a new Nikon body. The other way would be to get a dedicated video camera but I do like the idea of one camera doing both.

Thanks.

General Stock Discussion / Is it me or do Fridays suck ?
« on: January 10, 2014, 12:19 »
I find with SS and IS that sales on a Friday are always pants. Surely not as it is a working day ? I can understand the weekend being quiet.

When I edit images in LR I see crisper, more vibrant colours. When I upload to SS or IS the displayed file seems flatter and lacking the punch in LR. How do I get the best conversion from RAW to JPEG looking exactly like the LR  image ? I have tried different types of JPEG conversion and currently use Adobe RBG for all my JPEGS for all sites.

Shutterstock.com / New images selling quick
« on: December 16, 2013, 12:02 »
I must say I am impressed at how quick I am finding newly accepted images selling right after acceptance. How are buyers finding these images so fast ? I thought that it took a long time for new images to be seen (or so I was lad to believe)

I am absolutely frustrated at the constant rejection of an editorial file on the basis of the caption not being sufficient.

I filled in the info as they wanted (time, date, what is happening, where and why) and still they say the caption is not sufficient. I then have to keep re-submitting (having to re-select keywords etc) only to be rejected again.

I really don't know what else to say than the info I have already given.

Shutterstock.com / I still haven't been paid
« on: November 20, 2013, 03:31 »
I was a due a payment on October 31st as I had over the payment threshold in my account. It is now 20th November and I have still not been paid. I have looked at my earnings tab and there is no info on delayed earnings payments. Anyone else been paid this month ?

Software / Why is Lightroom so painfully slow ?
« on: October 31, 2013, 06:26 »
I have Lightroom 4 and I love it BUT as I am doing a lot of brush editing I am finding it sloooooooooow. I mean I have a new i5 8GB ram Windows 7 PC built for music making which processes a lot of audio as fast as lightning. So why do I have time to go and make a cup of tea before the movement of my editing executes ? Not good enough Adobe Grrrrrrrr  :-\

And while I am on the subject, why when you want to erase some marks with either the brush or the clone does the mark still show despite all your efforts ?

Shutterstock.com / Cant upload JPEGs
« on: October 30, 2013, 15:03 »
I am having trouble uploading JPEGs that are around 4mb and yet I have been able to upload JPEGs around the 3mb size. I have tried a Tiff but that is too large for them. I am at a loss :(

WARNING We couldn't read the following files, so they were ignored. If you're using a special image format, try using a standard one like JPEG, TIFF, or EPS. If that's not the problem, make sure your files end with a standard extension like .jpg, .tif, or .eps.

Alamy.com / Alamy sales
« on: October 23, 2013, 05:34 »
Well I have been with Alamy a few months and I have so far had 2 sales and they were in the first 2 months. I know they are meant to be slower sales but as you have to do a lot more keyboard work when submitting I am wondering if it is worth investing so much time  :(

General Photography Discussion / UK Printing Companies
« on: October 01, 2013, 03:22 »
I am looking to get a large print of a landscape done for my home. Firstly, its from a RAW file converted to a JPEG but should I convert to a Tiff for a better print ?

Lastly, can anyone recommend a decent quality printing company online where you can upload your image for printing AND a good price.

Thanks.

Shutterstock.com / Inconsistent reviewing
« on: August 15, 2013, 03:32 »
I really don't understand SS's reviewing. You can send a whole batch and they all get accepted or a whole batch (like just now) that gets rejected. To me this depends who you get. To get images taken in decent light AND  edited in Lightroom 4 to be rejected on the basis of poor lighting is quite ridiculous. What more are you meant to do ? At least IS are not over picky any more. Oh well, I will submit them a few weeks down the line and hope to get them in as I have done in the past.

Alamy.com / Alamay quality control
« on: August 02, 2013, 17:05 »
Looking through the Alamay site there seem to be a lot of very snap shot type images on there with very little thought of composition etc. Has this always been the norm or are they just letting anyone on now ?

Alamy.com / Making Jpegs larger
« on: July 05, 2013, 02:42 »
Because some of my images that have been cropped under qualify for size in the submission process at Alamy,  I am not sure how to proceed to make them bigger. I am using Lightroom 4 and only just getting to grips with it so any help would be appreciated. I am already rendering Raw edits to the highest quality Jpegs but it still isnt good enough.

Thanks.

Alamy.com / Alamy strange keywording requirements
« on: June 18, 2013, 04:29 »
having just been accepted at Alamy I am finding, even with keywords encrypted into my metadata the file editing is going to be a long long haul. Most sites just require you to select the categories and Bob's your uncle. Alamy require a 3 tier keywording, caption, description AND other info. As this will slow things right down my question is will it be worth it as regard sales and income ? If not I will keep adding here and there. If it isn't as good earner as canstock, DT I won't bother as the latter are poor sellers for me.

Software - General / Lightroom lost export settings
« on: May 27, 2013, 03:55 »
I have absolutely no idea why Lightroom is failing to save Jpegs as it has always done. I haven't changed anything but now it has defaulted to exporting Jpegs at lower quality. Also, it fails to save with it's title I have given it in the mettadata as well as creating a separate folder when I specifically ask it to be placed in the same folder with other images. Why has it started creating a separate folder ?

Help!

Shutterstock.com / SS site keeps going chips
« on: May 17, 2013, 09:38 »
Just of late when I view SS on Chrome it sometimes goes to a white screen with all thex in blue to one side mixed up with images. I refresh the screen but it doesn't go away. I have to close and open up again only for it to happen later on again.

Frustrating !!! >:(

Adobe Stock / Fotolia FTTP login error
« on: May 17, 2013, 09:17 »
I am trying to login to Fotolia's FTTP account in Filezillia but it keeps coming back with a login error. I am def entering the precise correct details. Anyone else having trouble ?

CanStockPhoto.com / Can Stock can't sell
« on: May 11, 2013, 10:17 »
I am sorry but having been on Can Stock for over a year I have made the grand total of 15. Some of my images at best  have had views no more than single figures and at worst nill. It's appallingly bad and these are files that sell well on SS and IS. They are also very picky about what they accept. Good images turned down (that sell well on other sites) for lame reasons like "poor composition" when I know that isn't the case (yes, I do admit when my images are poor composition but they usually don't get submitted). I have used Lightroom 4 to re-submit images I already have with them (deleted them first) only to be rejected second time round making their decisions look inconsistent as they passed the first time. I thought Dreamstime were poor for sales but Canstock are terrible. Why on eath they make it top of the low earners here I don't know.

Software - General / Lightroom multiple backups
« on: May 11, 2013, 06:49 »
Why does Lightroom 4 create a new file every time you want to back up? This will soon clog up my hard drive at this rate. Why doesn't it simply overwrite the previous save ?

73
As some of you may be aware here last year I posted my image that was used in the movie poster "Looper". I have looked on IS, SS and Dreamstime (I am only on these three) and I cannot see one single large payment for an extended licence. I am now getting worried that my image could have been stolen and used without my permission, or just a standard download. As posters are for sale all over the net, posters reproduced all over the world in cinemas, I feel I have been diddled here. My photographer friend knows a lawyer and thinks I may have a case.

I will now contact the company behind this movie and try and find where they got this from.

74
When I submitted my shots to IS, SS and Dreamstime I had not discovered the wonders of Lightroom. I was using the raw Shooter Essentials which I thought did the job. How wrong I was. Now I can get ok to good images looking fantastic from Raw with LR.

The question is, will I have to re-submit them as new images or can I replace already active files ? They really are worth replacing.

Shutterstock.com / Annoying Captchas
« on: April 24, 2013, 12:37 »
Why does Shutterstock insist on me signing in every time I access my page ? I have to fill in those awful Captchas on every sign in. I have set Chrome to remember settings but for some reason Shutterstock is an exception. >:(
