I read on a forum somewhere that the iStock MR will work on all if you remove the iStock logo etc. and change the wording so it reads generic.

I like to add comments to new pictures, because I don't want to rate every single picture that someone uploads in my CN just because it is new, kinda diminishes the "5" effect in my opinion.

The "5" should be saved for pictures I think are "fabulous" or give me the "wow" factor. I really like it when people leave comments. I think it is interesting to read what they say and encouraging also.

Just out of curiousity, does a comment help in the search option or just a rating?

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the ratings and that they help me get more downloads, but I would like to get a good rating because that shot deserves it.

on Fotolia. Guess I have just been impatient. Sales are trickling in steadily now.

This is good!

Just saw the post below for "crashing" - should have posted a reply there - sorry

Ok, finally uploaded almost 200 to Fotolia (over the past few weeks), expecting a bit of a flury, due to being new, but like only 14 sales so far.

This site is ssslllloooowww, it never remembers my login, which is really annoying, not well laid out from a web point of view, and you can't seem to see your portfolio properly in my opinion. (sorry Fotolia)

I really hope they surprise me and have a following of loyal downloaders.

Thought it was just me cause I'm new there.  Keeping my fingers crossed.

Off Topic / Re: MUSIC!
« on: March 06, 2007, 10:29 »
My Son, who is 15, is obsessed with classic rock and roll. He is on Music Council, in Jazz band, and school band. You would be suprised at the "classic" songs they have to play for school.

He claims there is no new sound to play, I claim he has no vision and remind him of Elvis Presley. He then revamps all the classic rock to his own sound as part of the learning curve and adds in new instruments.

My Son plays acoustic, electric and bass guitar, trumpet as well as learning saxaphone and plays keyboard, which he gets from my husband who jams with him everynight.

They play Zeppelin, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Clapton, plus their own songs they have written.

I live inside the ipod.

Off Topic / Re: income tax deductions
« on: March 05, 2007, 21:39 »
In Canada:

I believe that the main equipment (camera, lenses etc) are considered a "capital expense" and are handled the same as buying a car in a company name. You can depreciate it a certain percentage per year, but you can't expense the whole thing in one year. Leasing equipment is different, you can expense the whole amount. I think your computer fall under the same rule as equipment.

What you can do is claim a certain amount of square footage of your home (including hydro, heat, insurance etc) if you use some of it as an office and studio, you can claim business mileage and certain auto expenses, if you use your car for business as well as personal use. Payment for models, props, studio rental, office supplies, telephone (only business portion) can be expensed. Any expenses that are "consumable" and not "assets" you can deduct.

You can pay yourself a wage (so long as the cash flow is there to start) and any "help" you hire as well, but this makes one subject to submitting payroll taxes and they are ruthless in Canada regarding making submissions on time or you can get heavy penalties.

In Canada, you can only expense a certain percentage for meals and they must be reasonable. You cannot expense things like manicures, hair cuts, clothes etc. (if you are the photographer, not the model)

I have done bookkeeping for 30 years, and still maintain my husbands corporate books and tax returns. I wasn't going to bother with the above yet, but I got a T5 from iStock, so this forced my hand and was able to come up with a good annual loss, which gave me a lower yearly income (from my day job income as a graphic designer) and thus - a tax refund.

A loss will only get you a refund if you have paid tax to start with.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: RAYNOX DCR-250 MACRO
« on: March 02, 2007, 22:06 »
I guess this is like an extension tube idea but with glass for a P&S or dslr? Good Idea!

My extension tubes work really well for macro and were inexpensive. I use them with my 50mm prime lens. No glass in them to spoil your good lens glass. Three different sizes to intermingle. I ordered them on ebay right from Asia shipped to Canada with no problems.

Funny... I was going to post this same question as this happens to me all the time.

Personally? I think that it is tricky way to avoid paying for extra print runs etc.

This happens at least 3 or 4 times a week.  If reported, can admins do anything about it?

Hi everyone...

Funny, I get that every time I hit the upload button at Canstock, so I haven't uploaded anything yet.

What is that message? It asks if I want to accept it so I say no. Should I be saying yes?

Thanks

Steve... can't tell you how happy I am that StockXpert has a voice now. I was beginning to lose all hope and thought that StockXpert was slipping silently into a black hole.

So glad that StockXpert is communicating through you ( I got pretty bitchy there for a while when no one seemed at the helm - sorry) and I think you are doing a great job. Thats all we really wanted was know that someone was there and listening.

Glad that they have tightened up the quality (especially when I look at some of my early stuff - I am slowly deleting some of it as I learn more)

Is Peter still involved or has Jupiter absorbed the whole site? StockXpert always = Peter

I have a special fondness for StockXpert as they were the first paying site I applied to and I was with them right from the start. (bless their patience)

Anyway... Welcome and glad you are there.

Congrats!  You will look back in a while and amaze yourself over what you have learned by this experience.

Don't forget to have fun too. Don't let the whole "stock" thing suck the life out of what you do!

Hi Adelaide:

I believe it was DT that was trying to implement this, not iS.

iS did the dollar bin thing where they pulled a bunch of images that they felt were not up to speed and offered them for a buck.

God bless the purchasers!

I thought this one was funny, but never thought it would get accepted or sell!

Adelaide...I remember that request for image of veins!

Hi GeoPappas:

Yes, I mean IPCT - title, description, keywords etc. (sorry, trying to sneak in posts while we pack up our whole marketing/design department to move by weeks end.)

I entered it in PS CS2, but some of it was from CS and some from PS 8 now that I think about it.   Arrgg.

Thanks
Penny
