In my day job I deal strictly with editorial photos. From what I see the only place a shooter can really make money on editorial is with Getty. Getting in is another story....

We were once asked by the XXX Bankers Association for free photos, since the are a non-profit agency. We pointed out that their members were multi-billion dollar corporations and they could perhaps donate some money to cover the cost. Another time a company recently started by an investment banker who had just purchased the most expensive townhouse ever in Manhattan balked at paying a relatively small fee to use a photo. It's unbelievable how cheap people can be about photography and its value.

I'm guessing money might actually be an issue. The market for the app is limited to a fairly small group as opposed to most apps available.

I have a little over 1,000 pics there. Sell the occasional photo. I stay because of the ability to set my own price and the commission structure, but I was really hoping they would put a bigger push into selling stills ... and maybe they will.

The daily numbers not working for me now. Just shows me one old IS number, nothing for the others. New sales numbers are wrong -- picking up what might be daily sales or something like that. I emailed support but have not heard back.

I just had some rejections and my first reaction was what. When I took a close look at the images the photos were indeed a tad unsharp (not sure why but suspecting the lens). I have to say the inspectors were dead right with the exception of one image that was rejected on bad composition.

Microstockr support says they are aware of the issue, SS indeed changed the logon and they are awaiting the new one to fix the issue.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Editorial Credentials with a condition; need advice!« on: July 07, 2014, 05:46 »
Sounds like they want your images for free. I'm the photo editor at a newspaper. More and more venues want access (or possible approval) to your images as a condition to being allowed to photograph the event -- mostly concerts. I have a policy of not covering these events as we require 100% rights to our images.

Fujifilm X100s --- size and quality are great but the auto focusing suck both in speed and ability in low light. You can manually focus but it is a slow process. On the flip side, the image/lens quality are great. I've made quite a few stock images with this camera.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Let's share our story. Why are you doing stock photo?« on: July 03, 2014, 14:47 »
It reminds me of a guy I know who is a world class flutist and a music professor at a major US university. He was the youngest lead flutist in the Santiago Symphony. He fought in the Pinochet resistance as a teenager in Chile barely making it out alive. He's an avid motorcyclist and has ridden as far north and south as you can go in the Americas. Last year he became a pilot. And of course, he's a qualified train engineer just for the fun of it. Hell of a nice guy as well. I call him the most interesting man in the world. Wisely, he does not shoot stock photography!

General Stock Discussion / Re: If shutterstock introduces exclusivity« on: July 03, 2014, 09:06 »
SS already gets all the content they need. Creating an exclusive collection for them would likely just raise their costs, with possibly no greater return. I don't think the motive is there for them when they can out-sell current competitors without exclusive content.

General Stock Discussion / Re: If shutterstock introduces exclusivity« on: July 02, 2014, 11:10 »Quote Negotiating price on subscriptions is a scary thought. Indeed it is. Not pleasant and not something I particularly wanted to do, but was obligated to do. It did give me a good insight into how commodity driven micro is. Micro stock agencies are akin to supermarkets and department stores that beat each other up on price points. Image exclusive content at least gives them something different to market and sell, hopefully at a higher value. 218
General Stock Discussion / Re: If shutterstock introduces exclusivity« on: July 02, 2014, 09:46 »
I've been on the buying side of microstock where I had to negotiate the best subscription deals for a company. Each agency tried to point out minor differences in the content, but when it came down to it, the content is mostly the same. The buying point ends up being strictly on price, not unique content. When the agencies are getting beat up on price, it inevitably ends up with lower royalties for photographers. I think image exclusivity is a way to make stock less of a supermarket concept where price competition is the main factor, to a more qualitative market. SS will likely never go that way as they are very good at the competing in that marketplace, but I wonder if other agencies would not be better served going this route.

I have the Fuji X100-s. Mostly love it and the quality is excellent. Biggest issue is the slow focus. It's been improved, but still much slower than DSLR.

Also, if a buyer Google searches the image, they will find the cheapest outlet to purchase it from. This way, they have to purchase the image from the agency(s) you chose. Maybe this doesn't work in real life, but I removed my content from sites with few sales because of this.

Newbie Discussion / Re: How to apply for getty?« on: June 16, 2014, 09:47 »
I can only say that I looked into getting into GI at one point and all directions led me to the crazy contest. I have a good friend who has a long time house contract and he checked with his editor and who confirmed it. if the $50 fee has been dropped it is news to me since I looked into it. Compared to other agencies they make it an odd process and after emailing them about it I never heard back so forgot about it.
and yes sean, there is tons of complete misinformation about so many things on this MSG, it is mind boggling, and that is a fact, not an insult. ie: you don't have to pay to get an image onto GI RM. been that way for 18+ years (that is actually a bit of bu!!crap too as PC has not been around that long - maybe 12+ years and dropped down from the original $125 to $50), but hey i don't know what i am talking about 225

Editorial is a completely different ballgame (pun intended). This is just for creative. I'm also sure there are many ways around it if you are the right person with the right connections.
