New Sites - General / Re: Great site for illustrators
« on: April 21, 2011, 09:54 »
Although the idea of custom jobs seems appealing, it demands from the artist to do sketchwork for FREE with unlimited revisions(!), until the sketch is approved. Only then will the artist receive payment. No way any artist in his right mind would do something like that.

Also, the site has a lot of spelling mistakes, which make the site look unprofessional.

Veer / Re: How is veer with vectors?
« on: March 19, 2011, 06:39 »
Has anyone noticed any obvious preferences there yet? (like Shutterstock doesn't want any flowers, abstract backgrounds, and icons right now)

Are their "likes" more geared toward new ideas, or run of the mill clip art or what?  What about vintage color schemes, and vintage-looking illustrations?

I ask because I signed u,p but haven't uploaded at all yet.  I've been reading that they're more artsy and it's easy to get rejected there.  - am I off my rocker?

I have some vintage-inspired stuff that is very simple in concept but sells well because it's "cool" - but some sites have rejected them for "too simple", not seeing the big picture - if you will, and I don't want to start out with a 100% rejection rate...

BTW - how the heck do you get the little icons at the bottom here showing your ports?

I am a vector contributor there, but so far it has resulted in ZERO downloads. And very slow reviewing times, at least back in november.

Of my 55 submitted images, 3 were rejected, because they apparently didn't fit in their collection. Their loss. I won;t be submitting there any more images. complete waste of time.

To show your portfolio icons, make a minimum of 10 posts or so...

Illustration - General / Re: Best selling VECTOR sites?
« on: March 17, 2011, 21:53 »
I tried applying to ClipArtOf, but they said they didn't need another vector artist (?) What's up with that?

My vector top 10

High earners
---------------
1. Shutterstock/iStockphoto (about 50-50 in terms of $$$)

Low earners
-----------------
2. Dreamstime
3. Fotolia
4. VectorStock
5. BigStock
6. 123RF
7. Graphic Leftovers
8. Crestock
10. Veer (ZERO downloads)

iStockPhoto and Shutterstock account for 90% of my earnings.
I stopped uploading to sites 4-10, because with 75 images in my port, I make only a few dollars a month. Totally not worth it.

I really like this new functionality.Very informative.

About 75 files online, average 4-6 downloads a day, and the occasional On Demand download.

Off Topic / What's the word for an "indicated price offer"
« on: March 07, 2011, 13:07 »
I am currently writing a price offer for a client, which has to be in English. I am Dutch myself, so I have to translate every term. Now, in Dutch I have two different documents: one is a so-called price indication of the project, based on rough estimations. Another document is simply the real offer, after I've had a briefing and more info to correctly calculate the total project cost.

As I understand it, the "offer" document can be translated as "quotation", "quote" or simply "offer", right? But how do I translate the "indicated price" document? Is there a special term for it that I don't know of?

I'm not sure if opting in to the PP cannibalizes my sales at iStock itself. I'll stay opted-in. knowing that it isn't a lot of money (and I'm certainly NOT grateful for the raise, since their decision to cut commissions earlier), but if I opt-out of the PP, I'd gain nothing.

Talk about being underpaid... Check out some photo freelance jobs here. Have your chains secured firmly to your desk.  http://www.odesk.com/jobs/photography

This just made my day :D I know of sites like these, but this one is about the worst I've seen yet.

Well, thanks for all the replies so far. I guess I'll just stick with it. Still have that dream of building a sustaining portfolio that provides enough passive money to quit my day job. I just hope the return on investment is big enough in the long run. :D

Shooting or illustrating for microstock is useful for an extra little income (for most of us) but isn't in reality and extremely underpaid job? Aren't we all better off taking a standard job at minimum wage? I read in another topic about an income of $10/image/year, which is extremely low imho.

I myself have around 60 vector images in my port now. They have generated plenty of sales, but little money (around $300) in a couple of months. Yet the hours I spend on them are much much more.

So, with that in mind, why do you keep on microstocking? Is it really worth all the effort? I'm curious.

I don't like to cannibalize my collection, so my strategy is usually to offer to make them something exclusive. It can be similar, but has to be unique and different too.

In understand what you mean, but that's food for another topic. ;) Besides, I can still sell that image, because they want non-exclusive rights.

However, I am willing to sell an image exclusively, for a price that's equal or bigger than what I expect to earn from it on stocksites.

2211
A "logo" by definition, should be exclusive, since it should be trademarkable, and having it sold RF, that is not possible.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. :) At first they wanted it exclusive, but since they couldn't afford the initial offer, they now asked for a non-exclusive logo. But it's not an actual business, more like a student organisation committee or something. So trademarking isn't what they're after.

Otherwise, just write up a document (put it on the cd, and print on it as well), with whatever terms you like.  "X grants Y a perpetutal, non-exclusive license to use enclosed content for promotional purposes.  It is not to be resold, redistributed..."  yada yada.

Okay, thanks. I thought it needed to follow some juridicial guidelines or rules, but I guess not then.

2212
I recently received an email from someone who would like to use a stock illustration as a (non-exclusive) logo. Since an extended license on iStock doesn't allow for logo use, he'd like to pay me directly, and has asked me to name a price.

All very well, of course, but how do I officially grant him this license? Do I have to write a user agreement for this? Does it have to be a watertight contract, with legal terms and all? I'm not really sure how to write such a document. Should I even do this myself? How do you handle these kinds of requests?

Advice and/or examples are very welcome!

My apologies if a similar topic exists.

I have uploaded my portfolio at different stocksites. Some stocksites sell my files (vector illustrations) slightly cheaper than others. So I was wondering if buyers actually try to find the cheapest available download of a file, or if they don't care about paying a dollar more (and avoid going through the hassle of setting up a new account).

In other words, am I not losing out on money if a file is sold slightly cheaper elsewhere? I'd like to think buyers stick to one or two sites, so spreading my portfolio simply means more exposure > more sales > more money. But I might be wrong.

What are your thoughts on this?
