Weird how on the Stock Coalition Facebook page under his Calling for Entries post the option to comment is turned off.

And there is no reaction from the OP.

If you read all the comments, you'll see one from me - I turned off comments. The Coalition group isn't a place to advertise your business.

I posted a link in that comment to this thread so anyone who was interested could read the discussion here.

Alright, now I get it :) I agree that it's no place to advertise. Hopefully your comment there discourages people from uploading (at least until we know more!)

"Licenses issued by Playstock for any of your Content that is later removed by yourself will remain in full force and effect in perpetuity."

Yea, NO!!

Well, to be fair, thats true of all agencies.

Mainly true. Motion Elements is two Years. I just completed my two years post account closing and was finally able to delete my already sold vids that were locked for that two years.

Doesn't it mean that buyers who bought a license, will keep that license even if you remove your videos from the platform? Cause that's pretty obvious and fair. You cannot revoke a license a customer paid for.

I am merely relaying you the terms set forth by ME. Those were the terms.  I deleted my content in compliance with the terms.

Sorry for the confusion, I was talking about the PlayStock term you mentioned; my point is, if PlayStock issues a license to a customer for your video, and you later remove your video, then the purchased license should still remain valid for the customer.

Why would I upload for a meager 50ct bonus if I don't know anything about pricing, commissions or your USPs?

You really expect us to be that gullible?

331
There are no other major agencies selling video as well as the ones you mentioned. I'd even recommend ditching SS and iStock (ridiculously low commissions) and solely sell on Adobe and Pond5.

Subscription royalties still pending in my account for this month. Weird stuff is going on. What's their explanation? I have received zero communication from them...

I started to write on their FB page, and at least they replied that they'll look into it. They still did not do that, so I am going to continue and write them on public forums, otherwise they totally ignore my questions. I recommend you do the same it might help.

I might do that, I have sent them an email the 28th of August, no reply so far.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Is istock exclusive contributor worth it?
« on: August 30, 2020, 16:02 »
Why would you want to be exclusive with the scummiest agency in microstock history? They did even worse things than SS. Cutting royalties and treating contributors like dirt. You may not have been around in 2016 when iStock-Getty completely massacred their own reputation and goodwill, but what they did to contributors back then showed their true colors.

Their sales fell off a cliff, they lost their market leader position to Shutterstock and never recovered. So, yeah, good luck.

Adobe Stock / Re: Out of office (for a month)
« on: August 28, 2020, 10:56 »
Howdy Y'all!

I'm back in action full time and am working to get caught up on anything and everything I missed this past month. I hope you are all doing well. Let me know if there is anything urgent matters you need an assist on.

I spent my month off from Adobe Stock shooting stock...twisted right?
You can see some of the shots I snapped the first couple weeks I was gone here if interested: https://spark.adobe.com/page/GMbOYsGZ5vpQH/

Cheers!

Mat Hayward

Awesome photos! But now you're just discouraging contributors to submit their work, there's no way they can beat these views. ;)

@Noedelhap what about if a dollar amount hits your PayPal, and you don't convert and withdraw it to GBP for 2 weeks, you cant account for the actual dollars cant you? you can only
account for the converted amount in GBP?

Correct, I can only account for the converted amount (in EUR, in my case). Almost all of my microstock revenue coming into Paypal is in US dollars, save Adobe and some small agencies who pay me Euro (so no Paypal conversion fees there).
I always make sure to withdraw the same day. Paypal takes off some "hidden" fees for currency conversion (market rate -2.5%, it's not really specified), but that's not relevant for my tax returns. For the tax returns I simply use the net amount that comes into my bank account (so I don't deduct the Paypal fees separately).

And if thats right does it matter that you accounted for it two weeks (or whatever time) later than it actually hit your PyaPal account?

No, not really, but to keep things transparent (should I ever get audited) I never wait two weeks to withdraw it. I withdraw every amount almost immediately, so that the Paypal and bankaccount transaction are in sync.

I'm from the Netherlands, and I'm no accountant either, so I don't know the differences between our tax systems, but from what I read you and that government tax official are overcomplicating this.

The way I see it, there are 3 moments you can consider it "received" taxable income (and treat it as such):
- When you make a sale
This is a tax reporting nightmare. Since most agencies have a delay in reporting the sale to you, or do so in batches, or aren't transparent in when a sale occurs and in what currency, it's impossible to properly account for every sale. And what about the refunds?
- When the money hits your agency account
The money accrues in your agency account until a certain treshold is reached or until payout date, so it might be months before you actually receive the money in your bank account. This makes it hard to properly account for all the fees you incur, the currency conversions. Another tax nightmare.
- When the money hits your Paypal/bank account
This is what I do: I receive the money in my Paypal account, I use an Excel sheet to keep track of the amount per agency each month, and everything gets reported to the tax office at the end of the fiscal year as one lump sum. I only report the EUR amount I receive after currency conversion/Paypal fees, not the USD amounts, because fiddling with daily or monthly currency exchange rates is too much of a hassle and prone to errors.

In 10 years of microstock, I've never had any problems with the tax office.
If any government tax official would tell me I should report every sale when they occur, then I'd gladly tell him he's out of his mind.
Keep in mind, the tax office is old-fashioned, lagging behind and still not up-to-date with all current technologies, so I don't expect them to know what's the best way to handle this.

StockFresh / Re: Is it dead?
« on: August 28, 2020, 04:03 »
I doubt Stockfresh is ever going to get anywhere. in 9 years I've made 100 /$120...So yes, I consider them dead.

They are a fair agency, but the lack of marketing, their lack of a USP makes it tough to beat the competition.

Great, hopefully this leads to lots of users leaving the site for good.

Not that it matters anything really, those users will probably go to another freebies website...

Pond5 / Re: Enterprise custom license for pennies?
« on: August 23, 2020, 07:27 »
I keep saying, we all tend to look at Pond5 as a safe haven when running away from SS, but it's like jumping out of the frying pan into the fire.

Newbie Discussion / Re: Finding models...
« on: August 20, 2020, 12:24 »
I don't "EVER" pay Models for Penny stock. My students pay them so they can learn. I Pay Models with copies of the work. so that they can use to get paid assignments. Some of my Models have made $1,000s of dollars using My Images in their Ports.
Thats the way it is and thats the way it's been forever. How good you are and the value of the work Is their payment. Of course. I work In Hollywood. every waiter in a restaurant is a Model trying to make it and they need Images. I've had men and women who are smart enough to sell themselves make "A LOT" of Money with My work........To get them More work. If I lived in a small town In Idaho? , Im sorry. Maybe move On to products or Food or landscapes.  TRUTH.!

You paid them with EXPOSURE? Ugh.
Why not just pay them for the time they put in for you?

« on: August 19, 2020, 08:30 »
What royalty % do they pay? Does anyone have any sales here?

345
Commission rate: 50%. It's fair, it's easy to calculate royalties, and it leaves enough of a financial margin for the agency (which allows room for advertising, hiring competent people etc.).

But I'm curious about how you plan to differentiate from the strong competition. So I'll ask as well: what is your USP to the buyer?

346
Pond5 offers 40% for non-exclusives, which used to be 50%. 60% is only for exclusives. And they randomly change your pricing to suit their algorithms. People seem to forget the crappy royalty cut Pond5 gave us last year, yet now they're seen as 'one of the last good agencies'. Well, they're every bit as evil as SS.

Edit: grammar

It's your own fault for leaving them online at SS while you already know for weeks they're selling for peanuts, so why complain here when you can also simply remove them?

From what I read and hear Shutterstock has adopted the approach of cutting down on excess spending (automation, lower royalty payout) to counter the lack of actual growth in subscriber revenue and high quality images.

Sure, they're making more profit for the time being, but not because their product/offering or customer demand has improved. Cutting costs will only delay the crash, but not prevent it.

This quarterly report they can compare progress to the 2nd quarter of 2019, so the immediate impact of their failures are not yet visible in the financial numbers. But I think the next quartertly and annual reports will paint a much clearer (and dire) picture of where they're heading. They can mask it with fancy numbers and fluff talk all they want, but I believe investors are smart enough to see past that.
