I'm planning to set up my website to sell images.
I've a good knowledge of WordPress and I'm a front-end designer, so I can create a WordPress theme from scratch for this, but I don't want to cope with all the technical stuff behind it (images protection, watermarks, internal search engine, etc).

So I was wondering, if you have any advice or direct experience about which one to use: Symbiostock, Sellmedia or Grfx? Or any other solution maybe without WordPress?

These are my requests:
- FTP support
- EXIF/IPTC data support
- be able to use GPS location embedded in the image (so it should read all the data, not only a specified set like title, caption, keyword)
- images must be protected from download by unauthorized users (url masking for th downloadable files)
- internal search engine better than the default WordPress
- be able to sell different sizes and with RF and/or RM different licenses (would be ideal to have a sort of "price calculator" like Alamy for RM images)
- support for property and model releases
- ability to sell images, video and vectors
- OPTIONAL: ability to manage sales from different photographers (not many, 4-5 max) so they get paid directly

Hey Stepunk,

I'm the
Symbiostock rep here on MSG, so I'll try to answer your questions as best as possible.

Symbiostock offers:

1) FTP Support

2) EXIF/IPTC data reading and writing

3) Does not yet provide GPS support, but let me know how you would like to use it and we can look into adding it.

4) Images are protected in a secured directory

5) Internal search includes tag searching, but other than that uses the default wordpress search (however this can be altered with third party plugins)

6) You can create an unlimited number of licenses, bulk change them, bulk change prices, bulk apply licenses based on media type.

7) Support for model/property releases as well as exclusivity

8 ) Supports images and vectors.

9) Currently no option to have multiple photographers to pay separately.

Additionally:

10) Personalize watermark, change it anytime, automatic thumbnail regeneration

11) GD and Imagick support: If your server does not currently have imagick installed, you can still use Symbiostock with the base built in PHP image functions.

12) Extensive documentation and community support.

And, if you use our hosting PLUS service:

13) Automatic agency submissions (you just upload your files and they will automatically be distributed to all added agencies). This, along with metadata writing makes PLUS a one-stop solution for hosting your own store, keywording your media, and uploading it to agencies.

---------------

There are some polarized opinions on the different pieces of software, so what I would recommend you do is install each one and give it a try to compare features. I personally, as a contributor, find Symbiostock to be the most featured, expandable and easy to use for my needs. But as all three are free WordPress plugins, you should try them out and maybe ask questions while you compare them. You can try out Symbiostock for free with our PLUS service just to get a feel for it.

Let me know if you have any other questions or feature requests.

Hi Robin, thanks a lot for your answer!

3) Does not yet provide GPS support, but let me know how you would like to use it and we can look into adding it.
What I want to achieve is to be able to automatically give a location to all the images (through reverse geocoding) so the user can search all images in France, o all images of people in Paris, in all images of lighthouses in Normandy, etc

5) Internal search includes tag searching, but other than that uses the default wordpress search (however this can be altered with third party plugins)
So is it compatible for example with the plugin Relevanssi?

8 ) Supports images and vectors.
No viedo yet? Is it something planned in future development?

9) Currently no option to have multiple photographers to pay separately.
Again, is it something planned?

That is a really good idea - I will look into adding this to our feature list. Perhaps it can be coupled with a Google maps box so people can see the location in realtime, even satellite.

There are very few, if any, plugins I've seen that do not work with Symbiostock and WooCommerce. Symbiostock was developed specifically to not override any of WooCommerce's base files so that it reduces the chances of conflict.

A quick search reveals:
https://wordpress.org/support/topic/woocommerce-products

Which suggests that it is compatible with WooCommerce's search.

Development is nearly complete and is in the final testing phase. Based on the technical restrictions involved in processing videos multiple gigs in size, specialized hardware and software is required. Accordingly, for now, it will only be available on our PLUS servers.

One cool feature is that you will be able to distribute videos to agencies through our PLUS service, meaning you only upload your video once and can distribute it as many times as you want to as many agencies as you want. This reduces the lengthy time it takes to submit videos and also removes the stress involved in incorrect rejections (you resubmit it with the click of a button).

It also watermarks the video and creates a demo for customers to see and also creates multiple thumbnails so you can choose which image to use etc.

This is not a planned feature as we are also going to be releasing networking options that will link and showcase images from across the Symbiostock network of sites together for increased exposure and sales. As this serves to aggregate multiple artists together, it would be a different direction to make Symbiostock serve multiple artists within one site with separate billing. Although, it may be possible to have a WooCommerce plugin achieve this for you, we aren't planning on doing this.
