I'm getting an increasing number of totally incomprehensible, scrambled 'captchas'.  I just had to hit the 'new image' button 3 times before getting something I could read, and be able to log in.


I complained to SS. 

And I just received the completely expected, totally patronizing, 100% canned non-reply which basically says sorry, that's the way it is.

You wouldn't believe it, but today I got a captcha in SS that had an English word next to a hebrew word (with vowels!). I can barely find a spanish accents. But now hebrew with diacritic marks? Outrageous.

I complained to SS. 

The trick is usally that only ONE of the TWO words is required to solve properly in order to gain access. Usually one of the words is much better readable than the others and thats the one to solve...

Enter the easy word, type the same number of characters (best guess) of the scrambled one.

If you make a mistake USE THE BACK BUTTON!

People forget that they have to re-enter all the data after a fail and that is aggravating. Just go back and all your saved data name and password are there again, and you get a new quiz.

Anyone who reads the forums here or there knows, I have no problems and even the crazy ones with scientific notation or Greek or Russin, I get in just fine. I don't understand the problem. (if I was having a problem, I'd understand?)  

Come on, how tough are these?


Ten of my last recaptchas

Now Really? "THE" or "WATER" which one is too complicated? And these are all smaller than original and I bet anyone who tries can get ten for ten.

There has to be something else beyond the obvious going on here. I don't get it? I also don't get errors like some others. What's the trick?

Just guess or type anything when you get a silly one, usually works

I think one of the words is for security and one to help decipher text in some archive that the computer has failed to work out. The clearer one is the security feature.

A winner!  (that didn't take long) And yes last week I had two of those with half words, but I was on the laptop and in a restaurant, so I couldn't capture them easily.

You passed the test, you are a human = "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart"

I understand the need for security and the need to prevent automated 'bots' from creating fake logins.   I just think there are better ways to do it.  Obviously there is no value in presenting a captcha image that's complete nonsense, it just wastes people's time. 

On other sites I'm seeing  more of the question-and-answer approach, i.e. you must type in the answer to "how much is two times 2?".  That seems plenty secure to me, and a lot less irritating.

You are right. I suggest you'd write to SS support suggesting this, more efficient, solution.

As long as it's a win-win for both us and the agency I don't see why they wouldn't implement that.

Simple type in  "youtuest".  That's all you need.  Same with every other captcha request.  Just type in the one garbled word and your done.  There will never be any symbols, foreign letters, etc. in the garbled word (it's net really a word), just a bunch of English alpha characters.

My gosh don't we all have better things to do with our time than struggling to extract "youtuest" from that illegible mess.  As some else pointed out above, I've had no luck inputting just one word, it demands both.  I suspect that the rules change randomly - just one more way to make it less predictable and harder to crack.

IMHO:  It's like the TSA at the airports - it's gone beyond what's reasonable and rational, no longer makes sense, and is wasting everyone's time.  We should stop accepting it, quit sharing hints and tips on how to negotiate it, and start COMPLAINING LOUDLY.

Me Too. Maybe that explains part of the problem? 

I'll explain this again, for the people who are looking for the solution, and not just something to complain about endlessly. (and something that writing here or on the SS forum, isn't going to change anything?)

When you get one of these crazy images or words...  Hit the arrows. Don't like what you see, hit the arrows again.
