I made my 50th sale with SS today!

I've only been doing this for just over 4 months so im delighted.. No idea if 50 is good or bad for that amount of time, but I am very happy so far :)

Congratulations, if you are happy with 50 in that time, then its good.  I'm sure you would be even happier getting a payout every month, that was my first goal but it was easy in 2006.  Most of my sales still come from old images, getting new ones to sell isn't easy now.

I expected a lot less. My goal is also to get monthly payouts, working on that now :) I only have 200 images up... Trying to aim for that every month now.

Lol that's one of biggest fears! I'll get a barrage of criticism, not sure I'm strong enough for that yet haha

But here you go anyway.... http://www.shutterstock.com/g/David+Hewison?rid=3399407

Nice portfolio.  Have you tried alamy?  They do well with editorial photos for some people.  You might not sell any for a year there but if you are lucky, like I was last year, you might sell one and get over $500 for it.  They sell lots at low prices for web use but the occasional 3 figure sale makes up for it.

They sell editorial with a rights managed license, so you can't sell the same photos on the microstock sites but its good to have somewhere else to sell.

Thanks  ;D

Yeah I'm with Alamy - no sales but working on it. I'm told you need at least 500 images and about a year as you say, to see sales.  I think I have 370 up now.. so getting closer :)

Cesar

50th/per day or sum of sales is 50?

50 total! Per day would be nice :)

I've sold 128 files in 2 months time and I've a port of 450 images only. I think I need at least 3k images to get 200 or 300$ every month... What do you think?

I think you're trying to make Alfa feel bad about the accomplishment he's currently very proud of.

I don't think the size of portfolio helps, some people do great with 500 images, others don't sell much with 5,000.  The trick is to find what buyers want that isn't already oversupplied.  That gets more difficult every year.

It is not really only about quantity. Quality matters.
You can make much more than your wish, with a port much smaller than your estimations.

Congrats!!!

I also started in October and also with editorials and also with 200 images. Are you only in SS? I started at SS, IS, DT and Alamy at the same time and so far SS is outperforming all the others

hahahaha showing portfolio is scary indeed ;D I haven't showed mine yet in here for this reason ;D

You will have more sales if you balance your editorial content with more commercial photos. Anything interesting to shoot around your place?

Congrats. Now aim for 100 downloads a month.

I had a number of milestones recently as well, but the biggest ones will come in the summer.

Sounds like we're pretty similar then - most of my stuff is editorials which no one really expects to sell hard..

I'm on SS, DT, Alamy, BS, iStock, Pond5, DP, 500px (2nd highest earner - low sales though), Fotolia, CS, 123RF & Yay.

I have about 60 images on Getty through Eyeem and used to upload news to Demotix till it vanished into a puff of smoke.

Now my news goes to SS, Alamy or Newzulu.

So that's me.. I'm all over the place - too many places. I think for stock I'll focus on Fotolia, SS and DT. High quality images for Alamy, and all news will stay with Newzulu as they seem more embedded into the Australian media market.

Nope lol. But the city is 45mins drive away... and there are other interesting things around where I live, but nothing on my door step.. well, there's fat people.. they don't really sell! haha

Lana

Then you're in the countryside, there should be landscapes! Maybe try to go deeper into the jungle :D
But, seriously, rivers, lakes, forest? In the city (is it Melbourne?) you can try to practice with architecture (churches, certain buildings, cityscape in general), maybe street food - travel pics sell.

Congrats! You have the most beautiful port among newcomers that I've seen since the port links are up on SS.

Remember, you don't need to satisfy everyone's wishes here, just ignore uncomfortable question and keep up the good work!

Thanks Dodie! Although I wonder if you need your eyes checked?!  :P

TBH, I don't think much of my port at all but I enjoy it and sales are increasing every month - soon I'll be able to buy a nice coffee with my earnings.

I don't mind the questions - I put myself out there anyway and the feedback is awesome.. much more positive that I had expected - especially considering this forum can be brutal at times.
