Title: Most Popular Tab is gone back to Relevant
Post by: stockyme on April 10, 2018, 03:47
Hi Everyone!
I've just noticed that SS have changed their Most Popular tab back to Relevant. How do you think this will impact on sales. We were getting used to this change but they've reversed that changed just now.

Your inputs will be helpful for newbies like to understand the impact of this change.

I believe they started these experiments around mid January and haven't stopped till now. Since then, my sales have been in the toilet.

that's why this sh...t ay after good one...they are falling down down...i f they put best seller and new files...is totally useless to make new files in ss...nobody will search through zillion of   b..it ties to find a good one...they will go best seller and buy the first file in first page....that's why new files don't sell nothing in ss...even today i sold just   files of 2007==...at least stock pay 15% but it selling a lot and especially only new files. folia the same.

Top Picks is what it really was, not Popular, Relevant, or anything else. We've all seen that it has something to do with what they think should be shown first. What it's called doesn't change anything. The label doesn't make any difference, but maybe at least Top Picks is more accurate and honest for what we've seen for years?

I get Popular and New on the contributor pages, Most Popular and Newest on buyer search.

No one's forcing you to have your work on their site.

And what they label a button, a tab or a link doesn't change where it leads and what it does. It's just a name. Yes the search changes all the time, not to hurt us personally or any of that hogwash but to make the most sales for the company and make the best results for the buyers, so they will download more. It's not about us as an individual.

But I still say the best results for buyers would be clean up the inappropriate keywords and duplicate inch by inch image spamming. That would make the buyers happy and me too.  ;D I'd start by issuing warnings about spammed keywords and give people a month to fix them. If not, start removing images and accounts. Sorry, none of us are indispensable or irreplaceable at this stage. Reminder: 188,996,528 royalty-free stock images / 1,398,139 new stock images added this week

They don't care anymore. IS doesn't care, they accept almost anything, SS doesn't care, neither one does, unless there's some potential legal problem. Adobe is the last one, except the smaller specialty and selective agencies, that actually holds image standards up. Adobe passed IS, remember when IS was the top agency?

The gold rush is over, we're in for the long grind now. The rapid growth and expansion has passed. Competition is flooding the market. New competition, new photos, new illustrations, remember the race to the bottom, where we get less and less for the same number of downloads? We're there. Remember slice of the pie, spreading the same number of sales, over many more people? We're there.

And at the same time the small agencies are slowing down more, and some will be closing. FT sold, BS sold, even TS owned by Getty, a huge collection of agencies they bought, is closing and being merged into iStock. If anyone cares to look at this from a business perspective, marketing, supply vs demand, all this along with the consolidation or mergers at the top, makes perfect sense.

Video is the last frontier for now. Make money while you can.

they not accept everything...most of the b...it in ss are not not in stock...sure they lowered the standard, but ss killed any possible standard...go to the forum of ss and see those newbie asking why their images not sell...most have portfolio that i really cannot even imagine how you could only think to upload that stuff....in stock i cannot find so many  garbage photos...

just a search comparison.,,

Not sure what point you were making with the cheesecake search? Ft didn't work for me via your link, but I searched for cheesecake on the ft.com site and all three (iS, SS, Ft) look much of a muchness to me.

However, switching to New on SS gives mostly tiny variations on a few images, which is presumably what you were referring to (when I clicked on your link I got 'popular' which was much more varied)

FWIW, my usual comparison search is Blue Whale. iS's CV should make a much cleaner search, but all three searches, sorted by new, are pretty bad. I have no idea why iS has women in bed sneezing into hankies in a search for Blue Whale (the answer would seem to be deliberate spam, but weird), but there you have it, standards have gone downhill rapidly.

The downside of the CV is that if you search Balaenoptera musculus (recent/new sort), you get a reasonable result on SS, a poorish result on Ft, but iS's CV has mapped 'blue whale' to Balaenoptera musculus, so even the scientific Latin gets you the flu girls, the red bus, the bowls of flowers and all the other irrelevances on iStock.

When set on Popular, not new, SS gives almost identical results to IS and Fotolia. What was your point?  Sorry,  Shade Sue already asked the same question.

my poi wa the shutter stock has 3 times images of stock...beacuas mostly they accept any customer and any photo...new images on ss are appalling hundreds of repetition....that'swhy any mental safe customer doesn't use the new tabs and why we keep selling mostly old images, and new images don't sell....in stock 80% of sales fromfeb are from files uploaded in the last year, and view statistic tell me exactly that mostly new files are viewed. this is important if you want grow quality content.
in ss i grow only because old files keep selling but really small revenue come from new work.

Thanks for explanation. It is really a big problem for future growth, unfortunately, I see that trend on most of the stock agencies, except IS, but they have a tone of other negative moves.

It's not the same with me. If it were, the sale would be much better. I went a lot better 2 or 3 years ago than now. Now sales have simply stopped.

I doubt the world really needs new pictures of cheese cake.

Or more of most of the popular or easy to shoot subjects. Someone who uploads new versions of their old work and wonders why they don't get more sales, is missing the point. They are competing with their own established good selling work. The market doesn't need more shiny titanium gears on a blue background. It's been done, there's only so much need or demand.

The demand and market for any subject or image is limited. L I M I T E D Making more of something that's a good seller, will not necessarily make more sales. You'll just dilute any future sales. And then there's that problem with competition, over one million new images a week, most of them of the same best selling, most in demand subjects.

2018 and someone else is getting your slice of the cheesecake. But it's not one person, it's 100 thousand other people. Where's the demand and how many buyers are there for this? 57,022 Cheesecake Slice stock photos?

Suggestion is find things that aren't well covered, aren't most popular, or make specific views, angles, and examples of something. That's the kind of new work that will be more productive. Be different... The days of upload today, three downloads by Friday are long gone.

Very true.
As an example, late January, I made (and I mean "made", not "shot") a photo only available on a niche spread across a couple of pages on SS.
Since then, that photo is selling several times daily, weekends inclusive (and not just subs), reaching way over 100 sales so far, thus becoming my current most popular photo.

It feels so good when you hit the jackpot!  ;D

cheesecake was clearly just a sample to show that ss accept much ore images and have much more content compared to any other agency, especially garbage content.

in march i uploaded some easter eggs colored concept, they sold eery dy in any agency despite colored eggs in ss accounts for 300000 more images. simply because they were more creative and conceptual than 99% that are there.
even if i check cheesecake i would consider of good quality probably less than 1% of images.
ý

if you rely only on niche images i'm sorry you won't earn enough, and in my opinion if you have a real niche you should go to rm route.
the fact that stock and fotolia sell new images mostly while ss only old clearly show some fail in search engine.

food photography of high quality is totally missing in micro stock...i'm not talking of ingredients food photography. real food i'm talking. sure there are tons of cheesecake shot but not many of high quality. the trend is natural light...most food photography in micro is done amateurish, using artificial light.

Where can I see view statistics on Shutter?

SS stopped the algorithm testing a while ago and everything went back to normal in March. I check the search and everything is normal. Popular shows popular images like it always did. Did I miss something?

With so many new images added every week, growing sales is no easy feat. This is the reality we live in and doing our best is the only thing we can do. And I disagree that the quality has gone down... the quality is getting better and better, thatís why itís so hard to grow sales.

In absolute terms yes but I think the percentage of quality files has reduced as there is no doubt in my mind that inspection standards are much more lenient. To be honest I'm surprised that my sales have (so far) held as well as they have. What I have noticed is a shift in the nature of what I'm selling so I'm trying to react to that. It would be interesting to know a buyer's perspective on the search engine from what I've seen it returns way too many similars or "near identicals"

I have to disagree on a couple of points. From what I see, just like any other genre in microstock food photography quality is steadily increasing if you discount the new wave of garbage being accepted nowadays. The good shooters are getting much better. I've been shooting food almost exclusively for close to two decades now, and believe me, while the aesthetic in the blogosphere might be trending towards natural light in the real world pros use strobes almost exclusively. Client demands, deadlines, predictability and controlability are just a few examples why. The trick is and always has been to make it look like natural light.

in shutter i don't know....in stock there is view on esp....in stock only 5 10% of files are older than 2 years...in shutter stock practically only old files sells. sure you can have the nice image sold every day....but again my best seller in last 1 year and 3 months  is a photo of dubai landmark, and not even commercial but editorial...has sold 408 times so far mostly sub but also 25 times sod and 2 el...so according to the post before considering dubai has literally 1000000000 photos i shouldn't have sold...

But it wasn't just any Dubai it was a specific landmark. How many is that search? You say according to views on SS but there are no views on SS. Or do you mean views on a different site which means nothing to do with SS because you don't know the views. ESP views you decide are SS views? Keep shooting your better lighted cheesecake. You don't listen when someone tries to help. Your superiour 1 of 44,000 cheesecake will surely make you rich, because it's better and new. But new doesn't sell you say? You're right, new doesn't sell if there are already 50,000 of the same identical search, and your new much better copy can't get seen.

i said in view in istock. my new files sell only i in fotolia and stock, in ss i have sale mostly of file with good position , but they are older than a year mostly, new files cannot reach any position due to garbage spread.

as for dubai photo, the search for that landmark name show 6000 results and i'm first position, the search for "dubai" i'm in first page high rows too.
the funny part is that i uploaded only in 2016 while i took it in 2012...i spend the good years where i could have earned a lot not uploading(

Sales are holding up because your images are probably high on the search results. The people uploading new image have a mountain to climb in order to make it to the first page. I've seen my superior images (to something I did earlier) struggle to climb, while images entrenched in the first page sell like hotcakes. It's no secret that the search results favor good content that's been there for years. That's why I'm not too worried about the new contributors... not only do they need amazing work and incredibly keywording, they still have to make that climb to the first page.

Based on my own sales and the download habits of my design team (we have a SS subscription account), they sometimes download 1 or 2 similars. A few weeks back, a buyer download every images from a small set.

Not necessarily I recently sold some very old and poor,in my opinion images for the first time, and I do sell newer images. I'm not a big player so my results are not statistically meaningful but I find sales trends random and very changeable.

Where do I see my views on ESP?

https://esp.gettyimages.com/app/stats

Either my account has died, Getty has frozen in the Winter storm or there's nothing going on. I haven't seen a change in downloads or views for days.
