Title: Shutterstock 120$ comission...! wow!
Post by: Morphart on June 20, 2012, 22:14
What a surprise today, 3x sales of 3 illustrations (nothing special about them) for a 120$ commission each... on Shutterstock... That beats my 90$ record of last time.

I find these new licenses more and more interesting, they keep growing up. What a surprise to see a weeks worth of income come in one day!

Anyone else got those high commissions?

That's awesome!   :)  My ELs have completely dried up since April (never gone so long without one), so it's good to hear high-dollar sales are still happening.  Congrats!

Yes!  That's fantastic.  Congrats. :)

Right now I seem to be languishing in Subs City.  I was beginning to think someone had turned a tap off somewhere, so it's lovely to hear someone else is doing exceptionally well on high returns this month.  VERY good news! :)

I hear ya Karimala, no EL's in May for me got me starting to worry, just got one this week to put my mind at ease, as well as a few of those $16.80 ones. OD's are high this month too, but nothing like a $120 sale! Great to hear!

Very nice Morphart, congrats on those.

I've had a $75 last month but other then that the usual $28.

I've had one $18 commission so far.  If I get some in the $70+ range, it might motivate me to start producing images for microstock again.

Awesome! I never got anything more than 28$ from SS, just ELs and those 16.8$ SODs. Well at least those sales are happening, I can't say I'm disappointed. Congrats!

With all the stealing of images going on around the net, it's good to know there are people who still value stock images and are willing to pay for the correct license.  :)

I never had this kind of amount on SS, only 3 EL (3x 28$) once in a month
The most I had was once on 123RF : 3x 90$ in a day! It never happened again...

seems like buyers prefer to buy very strong licences only 3x at once ;-)

Unfortunately, there isn't. They promised they'd explain on their blog and when they posted here that the blog was updated (http://www.microstockgroup.com/shutterstock-com/single-image-no-longer-in-trial-mode/50/), it just said (paraphrasing) custom licenses (http://www.shutterstock.com/buzz/individual-image-licenses-update). IOW we never get to know what they've licensed for that fee. I think that's a problem, but no one else seemed concerned...

Thanks. That's pretty ambiguous. One line says up to $75, another says between $75 and $90, and another says $90 or more. I'm not complaining. I was just curious.

I assume I got 30% of it and the license cost $400, but what the difference between that and a $300 license seems kind of a mystery. Or is it more of a RM thing where it just depends on how they plan to use it? Which leads back to the question of what did I just sell?

I guess I can always opt out of the sensitive use stuff. I assume that is what this was sold under. I'm not overly concerned, but more curious.

On your Contributor Page, when has the Monthly Earnings  at the top right, change to total Gross Earnings? I just had a "GREAT!" moment until I realized that the sum was not July Earnings . . . . . . . . oh well.

For me, at least, this is new.  And if you click on "Earnings" then it brings you to "Earnings Summary".

Kind of nice.

Key to success in one naive step by Morphwanbeeart.
Buy cheap old fake illustration book. Put it on scanner an vectorized it in Illustrator with thousands or millions of dots and open paths?!?
Upload and enjoy... Cool

THNX for sharing this kind of lobotomy ;D

Tomorrow I'll go to school of brain disabled persons who are hungry for any kind of job and show them how to press Scan button on scanner, after that button in Illustrator how to trace it and Ill by them few grams of peanuts (because they are not wealthy (peanuts I mean), one scan one peanut, one trace one peanut. No more)
Ill bee back tomorrow (like Schwarzenegger as Terminator) and pick up my DVD with this traced old fart shits and upload it to all stock sites.
Watafakija

After that Ill proudly post my EL or whatever great earnings here at MSG forum.

P.S.
I dont like copycats (who does)
But you portfolio is first who deserve my big PUKE.

OK I understand that you know to draw something in illustrator or in other vector applications but this is not what buyers want to buy. So you as I can see you find trace option in Illustrator or Corel which made you Illustrator Master Blaster as you present yourself.

If you are offended with my piffle fell free to tick IGNORE button (its not harder than press Scan or Trace button which you are using so often in you lets say work)

Good luck

I don't know about Morphart, but mine was about the farthest thing imaginable from either a sensitive purpose or something for a "mature" audience.  It was a photograph (not illustration) of fall leaves, composite of three individual leaves actually, with some shadowing and text thrown in.  I can't imagine an application for this image that would call for a sale of a couple hundred dollars (my commission $112).  I have received a couple of EL's and numerous OD's for this image, but big dollars ..... I just don't know.   No complaints of course, but I sure am curious.

Hope you fell better after this? So much hate and frustration in you, things must not be going well for you to be complaining about other peoples portfolio. I'm the one working on it, why should you care?

1st nonsense :
...but this is not what buyers want to buy.

How please enlighten us with your knowledge... What DO buyers want to buy? My earnings and download shows the contrary else I would have stopped doing this a year ago.

2nd nonsense:
So you as I can see you find trace option in Illustrator or Corel which made you Illustrator Master Blaster as you present yourself.

Do you take drugs? Illustrator Master Blaster... Maybe find something less nerdy next time if you want to insult, just had a good laugh :). You try and do some of those type of image, you will see that there is a lot more than what you think you know.

And for your reference I do have also 700 hand drawn color illustrations and 320 video. Not sure what is your point. Not my fault if you didn't get those type of commissions. Stop crying start working, maybe you'll see results.

For my part I am not artistically proud of my portfolio, and I do know that it does not have the top level quality aspect your portfolio might have, but from a business point of view (yes this is a business, not an art gallery) I can say I would not switch my portfolio with yours :). There ARE buyers for these type of images, I see 3.3k of them saying it each month in Shutterstock.

From what I understand, these high dollar images are negotiated on a one-on-one basis with the customer.  That's why the dollar amounts can vary so widely.  Based on the 20% to 30% commission mentioned in the SS blog, my $112 image apparently sold for somewhere between $375 and $560.  I sure would like to know what it's going to be used for.  I've one image that was sold several years ago for $0.25 when I was first starting out with SS that I later found on a billboard in Oklahoma.  Bummer.   :'(

Hi All,

When you receive a high royalty for a single image, it is because the image was sold under a license that offers the option for sensitive use. That does not mean that the use was a sensitive one.  The majority of these images will not be used in a sensitive manner.  However, such use is a possibility. Unlike some competitors, we give you the ability to opt-out.

High royalties are often the result of a prenegotiated agreement with volume buyers such as large advertising agencies.  These volume buyers may require additional license or workflow features, such as the option for sensitive use, indemnification, multi-user accounts, prenegotiated pricing, and special billing and workflow features.

By opting-in to sensitive use, you get access to all sales made to these buyers.  By opting out, your images aren't available to buyers who require the option of sensitive use.

Overall, these sales are a great opportunity to drive additional revenue to you and we're excited to make them available.  :)

@scottbraut: I wish Shutterstock would give us the opportunity to opt in or out on an image basis. About 10 % of my pictures are of children, and I can't (and won't) opt those in. But the other 90 % of the portfolio would not be a problem.

Totally agree with you.  An opt in/out option at image level (not all the portfolio) will be a much wiser decision. I am willing to opt in the majority of my pictures BUT not all of them.

Maybe I am misunderstanding this:  I've only recently opted in for the "sensitive use" sales.  Before opting in I had several "Single and Other" downloads.  They were much less that $75 or $100 but were more than the OD downloads.

Are there separate rate charts for "sensitive" and "single image" downloads?

Maybe I am misunderstanding this:  I've only recently opted in for the "sensitive use" sales.  Before opting in I had several "Single and Other" downloads.  They were much less that $75 or $100 but were more than the OD downloads.

Are there separate rate charts for "sensitive" and "single image" downloads?

I guess so, so far in the "Single and Other" I had 11 downloads

- 1 for 2.8$ (28%)
- 1 for 5.32$ (28%)
- 2 for 16.8$ (28%)
- 6 for 18$ (30%)
- 1 for 70$ (28%)

from which values are they sensitive us? I have no idea but I believe only the 70$ (which is the 75$ if i havenīt had it before the last club)

Thanks for the explanation Scott.

I have a question though...at 3 x $120 commission ($360 to the artist per the original poster) does the 25% commission that Shutterstock says artists get still apply?  In this case would Shutterstock be getting $480 per image for a total of $1,440?

What i don't understand here is why somebody buy a image/illustration ( without people in it) with $480 and not using the file for sensitive purposes when they have the EL option for $100.

They must have different options and uses that is not possible with EL.

How does an illustration get a sensitive use license? I thought those only applied to photos with people in them...

Good question....

i really don't like this secrecy around this ''sensitive use'' license price, terms and conditions. They must be public like the RF and EL licenses.  :-\ :-\

It looks to me like more along the lines of special licenses that are outside the scope of the regular RF license that is covered by the subscription packages or ELs.

That could include much higher print runs or maybe usage for a corporation that wants to use the image for several businesses within their company. Well, scottbraut already outlined it for us anyway...

Obviously there is a need for such licenses and I'm glad that SS caters to these kinds of clients. No complaints here.

Apparently some people have a broken scroll wheel on their mouse?  ;)

Best,

Scott

;D ;D ;D Ok, so where can i see the '' additional requests'' terms that volume buyers want, beside the sensitive use that is very clearly. I don't want to sell a image without knowing what rights are applied to that specific license.

SS contacted me saying someone wanted to buy one of my non-people images under this license and that I should enable sensitive use 'til it sold and then disable. I responded they should allow disabling by model release - which they really should. I enabled my port. After a week with no sale, I disabled. Maybe I was too slow or the buyer found a different image or who knows. It would have been nice to get the big $ boost though.

The exact same thing happened to me a couple of months ago.  Was told that the buyer went in another direction.  Was also told that SS was considering Sensitive Use on an image by image basis.  Hope it happens!

...but this is not what buyers want to buy. So you as I can see you find trace option in Illustrator or Corel which made you Illustrator Master Blaster as you present yourself.

If you are offended with my piffle fell free to tick IGNORE button (its not harder than press Scan or Trace button which you are using so often in you lets say work)

Good luck

Finally I got one lobotomy follower :)

How many empty letters. Can you please hob-nob with you scanner and with make it good trace button in Illustrator...

Congrats for you sales anyhow...

Hehe congrats on reading that reply :p Anyhow everything looks simpler and easier when you look at it from the outside :).

You're an artist, I am and investor and wannabe artist, bottom line, we make money, and that is what selling Microstock is about for the most part.

Hope it made you feel better, else a therapist might help :p

Yes, but I also only have vectors at SS.

Just got another one tonight, looks like same buyer (East Coast - NY). The illustration had a similar theme and tonight's commission was $72.00.

I thought this was going to be a slow week, but it's looking like it could easily be a BWE.

Just had the same image sell 2 x SOD's today for a total of $168. First was in the UK a few hours ago for $18 and another just now from the US east coast for $150. Fairly ordinary image that's only been on-line for a couple of months too.  It's definitely an aspect of SS that keeps growing.

On the earnings schedule it says 30% and in parentheses it says "up to $120", does that mean they are charging customers a max of $400 or does it mean that even if they charge $1,000 you only get $120?

No, Scott from SS said customers pay up to 400 dollar.

Thank you! As it happens it is also the first time I've exceeded $250 from a single day from one agency alone. Not bad from a place where everyone keeps telling us we only earn "25c a download". My RPD as SS so far this month is currently running at $1.33. Good times for SS contributors!

Wonderful!  :D

Last month was pretty poor on ELs for me, but the "ODs and SODs" (that always makes me laugh) are going pretty well.

Well done to morning.light too.  Wishing you both (and all) many more sales and increasingly high returns.

Noticed the same with EL's, last 2 months have been light on for me, well under my usual amount. Hoping it returns to normal levels soon! And yes, congrats on the big sales guys!
