Post by: Julied83 on May 19, 2014, 10:12
Hi ! I need your help. Since last week, my language on SS website set itself to french. ( ok yes I'm french ) but I prefer work on my microstock in english language. Even if i set it back to english, it goes back to french when refresh or changing pages. How can I fix this to make english my language everytime ?

Salut !

I have the same problem too, with Shutterstock, but not with Shutterstock contributor.

When I open a session in Shutterstock (to take a look to my portfolio for example) Shutterstock seems to chose automatically the language in function of the language that I use for my Operating System - actually italian (at least it is like this on Mac).
I have never found a solution to this problem, even trashing the cookies and cleaning the cache the problem persists.

Assuming you are in France does it not pick up your IP address as French so uses that as your location, similar to what Google and such does?

clearing the cache didn't change anything to the default language automatically set itself to french !  :(

Depends which browser you are using. All browsers have a default country setting which you can change.

You could use a different browser to your usual one for Shutterstock and change the default country setting on this one to the country you want which should work fine. You may also be able to set the language change for a specific site.

I use Firefox - just go to tools > option > content > languages. You can then set your preferred language for a web site.

Go up to the right and click on the flag, choose English.

Go up to the right and click on the flag, choose English.

It's annoying that the website doesn't remember that choice. It always switches back (to German in my case).

It still goes back to french in safari and firefox too... so I guess I can't do nothing about this ! Except if SS decided to gave us an option in our account to choose language of our account. Just switch to english everytime is just not funny... but it can be worst ! So I'm gonna deal with it.

I had this too some time ago. Every time I went to Shutterstock (buyers) site, it gave me the Dutch version (as I'm in NL).

What I think I did to get only the English version was to change the language to English on the Shutterstock site in the dropdown menu and then save/bookmark SS at that setting and delete the bookmark that kept giving me the Dutch version of the site. Now I only get the English site from the bookmarked link.

I found out on the SS forum that the team is aware of this bug and are working on it.

You could try: http://www.hidemyass.com (http://www.hidemyass.com)

This uses a free proxy server to search with an anonymous IP. It might work for you with the free option - or not!

Are you on Mac? (but maybe with Safari maybe it is the same on PC, I don't know).

If yes, it is because Safari analyses the language settings of your system and automatically propose you the chosen language as the language for the web page (some sites set the language in function of your IP address too).
I think that you cannot do a lot because it depends of the code of the web page, and you cannot change it.

As a kind of test, try to go in the language preference panel and drag "English" up, in first position in the list. Your system language will change to English, and your page will change to English after you would have opened/restarted Safari.

Note: you have not to restart your computer after the change of language, as the system asks, but only the app that you open or restart will use the new language. If you want to have the new language active for all the apps a new login will do the job.
