Hey you stock photo enthusiasts,

My name is Alexandra. I am the Community Manager at Snapixel.com, a new photo website that combines the social aspect of Flickr with stock photo sites like Istockphoto. We just launched and put out our first press release this week. I was wondering if you'd like to check it out:

newbielink:http://news.yahoo.com/s/prweb/20090428/bs_prweb/prweb2361764 [nonactive]

We want to make it easier for people to sell their work online, and want to welcome creative photographers who may not have been in the market before.

I appreciate you taking the time to check us out. Please contact me if you have further questions.

Plus:
- euro
- RF and extended at very good prices - 60% for the photog
- solid platform, well programmed
- IPTC, mass-upload
- clear business info with street address in the US

Minus:
- The mix of a social and a stock site didn't work for Mostphotos.
- "Snapixel offers 1GB of free storage or a premium package for unlimited storage." So it's a paying photohosting site where you can occasionally sell and "share". Hosting fee = 35 euro/year. On a free account, the resize quality of the thumbs will be inferior. @$%*&%$!
- "Free Accounts have 1GB of space (Approximately 2000 photos)" - that's incorrect: a 10MP photo in top jpg quality is around 5MB so it means 200 photos.
- Model Release Forms must be on file and faxed to Snapixel. Why can't we just email a facsimile like on all other stock sites, and do we have to do it with every person shot?
- Giant 640px wide unwatermarked "thumbs". (no comment about the "quality" and the liberal framing of this shot  ;D )

Sounds like allot of minus to me!...and pay them 35 euros for storage, after 200 photos "I don't think so".  ::)
Good luck on your venture Snapixel.

Thanks Flemish, for breaking it down in details.  ;)

Um well hate to be a pain in the a$$ but would the OP please reffer to the following thread?

I don't really think that this current thread really applies to newbies. Best of luck to the OP though with your venture and welcome to the lions den!

I agree with everything FlemishDreams said - I think he said it well and the owners of the site would do well to listen to the advice given.  So here is another I agree.

also,
Perhaps they could have image upload free if you put them in the 'Marketplace'
If geotagging is part of the site, I don't see anywhere where it is searchable.  Wouldn't this be a great search method for buyers?
The watermark is VERY faint and will probably get a lot of complaints from microstock photographers.

Thanks to Flemish for saving me some time clicking on the link.  I am not uploading to a site with large preview images and no watermark.  I disagree about mostphotos though, that site works for me.

What will it take for a new site to succeed?  They will have to forget us paying to upload for a start, that is ridiculous.  There are enough free sites that make money for us.  They will need a big advertising budget and lots of unique content.  I think it is almost impossible for a site launching now to generate enough sales to make it worth using.  Hopefully they will prove me wrong.

I completely abhor "stock photo" sites that charge for hosting.
It's a clear conflict of interest and a certain indicator that they are not serious about selling your images.  They just want to make money from naive photographers.

It's an absolute indicator they have no intention of making a serious attempt to sell images. Big fat pass on this one.

Welcome ,
I agree on the topic on watermark. But if you want to take it a step further, do like 123rf where the contributor gets to move the placement of the watermark. As you know, not all images work well with a fixed placed watermark.
Also , get one that is large enough and transparent to cover the image yet enabling you to see the work .
I like some sites with large images, but I am not sure if that's a good idea, as one can easily printscreen and use them illegally. I prefer the ones like some of the Big 6 that are small but enable you to zoom. eg. Stockxpert is a good one like that.

I haven't time to visit your site, but I know FlemishDreams has a good but critical eye, a great pain most times  ;D   but I would listen to his suggestions as they are almost as good as it came from me  ;)
Seriously, you would do well listening to some of these constructive criticisms
as they are what contributors are looking .

That image is truly not front page material. Slanting horizon, bad composition,
cut off subject, not anything good in this one, sorry. If you want to make a good impression , that is not the photo to use. For sure.

Hi Flemish,

I really appreciate your suggestions. I have discussed some of the issues you have presented here with the team. We agree there should be more than one option to send the release forms, and have added the option to send the release form via email. Also, for anyone who has applied and been accepted to sell photos in the marketplace we have upgraded them to a premium account that allows unlimited storage.

As we fine tune the website all of these suggestions will help us offer a better service.

Feel free to contact me directly if you have any suggestions or feedback. We really appreciate your constructive feedback.

Thanks Again,

Alexandra

Hi,

Just to clarify, as it may not be clear, a Snapixel pro account is free. There is no charge, and each pro account is bundled with a premium account free of charge. We are going to do some fine tuning on the site so that this is clear when signing up.

Thank you,

Alexandra

When I beta tested the site I discovered that all of my images were automatically placed on the Flickr style part of the site while they waited to be reviewed. As stock images I was uploading full size images not realizing that they would be made available to the public in this manner. Is this still part of the process?

Hey Azurelaroux...   noticed the same thing, but they aren't available to the public.  Through the marketplace they are and after emailing them today, there is are new watermarks applied to the images and the right click options have been removed.   Good start.

I quite like the site, the people behind it and their vision for the future.  Sure it'll take some working, but they've only been "live" for a week.  I've written to them twice and have had immediate responses.. even had the CEO ring me overseas to chat.  Try that on any other site.

We all talk about how poor the sites generally are, how bad the market is and how to do it better!  I said in a thread late last year that people should stop bitching.. and put their money where their mouths are.

Look at the list to the right of this post...  seriously, draw a line under BigStockPhoto..  from there down, is there anyone that you really want to support?   Personally...I'm tired.

I'm taking my bat and ball somewhere I'd like to play.   If you don't want to come, cool.  If you have something constructive (not destructive) to say... throw it to these guys as they seem willing to listen and learn.

Ok.. start the bagging now!

Cheers,  JC

CanStockPhoto, FP, PM, ZYM, MP are all making money for me, cutcaster might be worth a shot, as John seems to be trying his best.  I wont try another new site until they come up with a different strategy.  Trying to sell the same images that are already on all the other sites doesn't work anymore.  Perhaps this site will be a little bit different but I still think they wont have enough unique content to attract buyers.  If I wanted to start a new business, a microstock site would be the last thing I would try at the moment.  There are already too many established sites.  I hope they come up with something different but snapixel already seems similar to snapvillage and that was a disaster even with Corbis behind it.

Yes they are. When I uploaded my images for review I then went to members - found my name - clicked on the images that were pending review - and got the unwatermarked image in the flickr style page.  You can still click on members and click on their images, I just don't know if they are pending for stock or if the contributor was intentionally uploading to the flickr side.

During the Beta I wrote several critiques of different parts of the site. Not once did I receive an email in return. Even when I asked a question it went completely unanswered. Personally I'll stick with companies that have an established buyer base or who I think are truly unique in their approach. But whatever works for you.

Hi Azurelaroux,

Just checked to see if we missed any emails, and unfortunately I don't see anything from you. If you need anything, or want to provide us with suggestions feel free to contact me directly. I can be reached at newbielink:mailto:[email protected] [nonactive] . If any of your questions went unanswered during the pre-beta stage, it was unintentional.

As an update regarding the watermarks, the next revision, which should be live in a few days, will include the ability to watermark any image when you upload.

Good moves. There is still the watermark issue, certainly for the marketplace pictures. Marketplace and "share" pictures should also not be mixed in searches, and notyet-approved marketplace images should not be available at all, certainly not in the "share" section. For releases, it would be handy to have a library where you can pick the proper release, and not upload it every time. The geotagging (if done like in Flickr) is a great tool in looking for images of a specific location: nature, landmarks, architecture. I also hope there will be some decent QC for the marketplace pictures, or you will attract all the straight-upload-from cam people with tens of similars.

@sharpshot: Mostphotos can work if you play the commenting game. The advantage of this site is the high reward and favorable commission. In principle, we should support sites like that, if they sell.

Hi Nancy,

I sent a reply to you on March 26th and I appreciate the input.

We've heard your suggestions and feedback from you and others and we have made changes as needed. We are aware of the challenges and hurdles that are present with any new service. The site may not be for everyone and we know that many of you may not have a need to use Snapixel.

I do want to echo the comment by JC-SL: We are listening and we will probably make a few mistakes here and there, but with some time, the features and service will evolve.

We officially launched the service on April 28th, 2009 and we will continue to iron out any bugs and continue to fix any problems.

Thank you to everyone on this forum for all the great feedback. It helps us build a better service.

Feel free to email Alexandra or myself if you have any ideas, comments, questions or concerns.

Best Regards,

Adam Oliver

Yay!! "Snapixel pays on a 60/40 revenue share. The photographer retains 60% from each sale." I don't care too much about what prices images sell for, 25 cents, $4.05, $35.10, $1000. I'll support any agency which gives us the Lion's share for our work. Cheers Snapixel. I hope you come up trumps.
