Hi All,
adobe bridge CS5 is running extremely slow, I usually use it as a image browser and key in metadata, but it is getting so slow that it will become non responsive.
I wonder what I can do to improve it..
I read about the harddisk space is important, is it the harddisk space of cache or the drive where i keep my file (external drive).
I keep all my photos by year, so it is kind of big size folder, maybe like 2-3k images a folder, will adobe bridge able to handle size like these?
I notice there is a cache of preview thumbnail, should i purge it once a while?

I'm sure someone more expert will be along soon, but I certainly wouldn't purge the 'cache'. Creating the thumbnail 'cache 'is what takes a long time if you have many images in a folder. After the set is complete, the folder is much faster to load in the future.

I have tried to purge and it takes like 2 hours to generate those thumbnails again..but it doesn't help the performance too. I want to right click and choose file info, or select multiple file..none of it can react..it shows 'non responding' but back to normal in a while..
even i can browse every image, but it seems i can't edit and multiple select. I wonder why such a lousy software? at least give me a message like the hard disk space is not enough or blah blah.. it seems so clueless.

I like the software. I can choose multiple files and edit etc., but I don't keep thousands of files in one folder and everyone's computer configuration and setup is different. I remember five years and two computers ago downloading all my files (probably over 2000) from a safari into one folder prior to sorting into sub-folders: it took hours to crunch all the thumbnails and I thought my computer was dying, but after it had crunched them, I had no further problems.

Lightroom is where Adobe is focusing its file management efforts and it works reasonably well. I don't expect them to do much more with Bridge (for which they don't charge), but it's always been slow.

i use lightroom for raw to jpg.. and use adobe bridge to edit keywords.
I wonder is lightroom works perfectly for keywords and possible to dump the adobe bridge totally? one thing i like lightroom is the zoom feature is really good to check the quality of image, the zoom in bridge is not really helpful.

You need to provide a lot more info. Also, you'll find a lot more help on the Adobe forums.
Sounds like a ram issue. Buy more ram.

Why don't you use Adobe Camera Raw, which in integrated in Bridge?

Why don't you use Adobe Camera Raw, which in integrated in Bridge?
Butting in, it's not as handy as it would be if you could just either hover to zoom, or click to zoom into a detail, e.g. an eye, to check sharpness.
Unless I'm missing something, from Bridge, you need to click to open ACR, then go down and select 100% zoom, then go up and select the hand tool and navigate to the precise area you want to check. Of course, it's doable, but not optimal if you're trying to select from several 'similars'.
(I guess this isn't an issue for those with large monitors who get huge Bridge previews. I only have space for a tiny monitor.)
In old versions of Bridge, you could click and get a zoom on the immediate area, e.g. an eye, BUT it was a 200% zoom, and I never found out how to reset the default to 200%, before the feature disappeared in the current version.

R U using a Mac or Windows? How much RAM do you have? What type of drives are you storing your files on? SSD works best to launch your CS5 and 7200 to 10K rpm drives to manage your files...

i got 6G ram.. the adobe will become slow when i try to multiple select or right click for 'file info'..

You are not the only one. There are some threads about this issue on Adobe Forums. It seems that it has something to do with cache memory. You should try to play with cache / under preferences.

i tried to purge the cache one time and it takes few hours to generate those thumbnail again.. but the problem comes back.
for hard disk space, is it the disk that adobe install on? or the hard disk i save my final jpg? which hard disk space is more critical?

I don't know. I have Bridge installed on same disc as saved images. But as I understand it - previews are saved on system disc, so it shouldn 't have something to do with speed or free size on external disc if you keep full previews in cache.

Have you tried assigning/using a scratch disk.?..
