I never used text in Illustrator. I was doing a logo today and everything was fine until I tried to put some text. I can put the text, but if I try to save it, I get an error message ("an unknown error has occured") and the program says it doesn't have enough memory, ending up aborting if I try anything further. First I thought it was the text over a path, but even a simple text does that. The file itself is very simple, a few paths in three layers, 165kB file.
All other programs are closed, except for a My Documents window. I have 1.5GB RAM, 1.0GB are free according to Task Manager (with AI closed).

It may be a font problem. Try to make outlines of the text and see if that helps. Do you use a Mac or a PC?

I ended up finding an answer (not a very clear one...) in Adobe forum.
http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?128@@.3bbd130c
basically this, posted on Feb 26 2007, guided me to the solution:
"Still no go, so I went to the CMap folder for Reader (Program FilesAdobeReader 8.0ResourceCMap) and copied the 2 files (Identity-H and Identity-V) to the earlier created CMaps folder and it worked. "
Other posts saying to delete aiprefs were useless to me.
I was amazed to find how many fora in the Internet discussed this problem with various solutions (or trials) and Adobe support seemed a bit lost too.
