What is a good free IPTC software? I am currently using Irfanview but it is for non-Mac users. So just wondering what the rest of the people are using if I want to switch, which would be a better one to switch to. Any reasons for using the particular software for your IPTC? Pls tell me the good, the bad and the ugly. Thanks!

I use Photoshop CS3. I have a large database of keywords and descriptions in Excel, and the two combined do the job for me. I know its not ideal, but it works and I am used to it. Since I sell other things than images, it is handy to have keywords if a form I can use with any program.
I tried a few free programs, but always came back to Photoshop and Excel.

There is XnView (http://xnview.com), it is free and available for MacOSX, Linux and Windows. The only problem I have is with iStockphoto, as for some reason the IPTC is not recognized.
When editing IPTC, don't forget to do go into browse mode, then right click your image and select "edit IPTC data". This way, when saving the IPTC data it doesn't re-compress the jpg, so it's a lossless operation.

I've been using Photo Mechanic (http://camerabits.com/site/downloads.html) lately and I love it! The ability to create as many master keyword lists as you want is a huge plus for me. Plus built-in spell check! Available in PC and Mac...

There's IPTC and XMP. XMP is used by Adobe (Adobe Bridge and Lightroom) to store keywords (and also by Istock).
Irfanview uses IPTC.
I had problems with double groups of keywords until they told me that one group was in the IPTC and the other in the XMP of the photo.
For I didn't know this before I wondered why only my older keywords did show up on some stocksites like Istock and I had to copy and paste the newer ones.
Cushy Stock also uses IPTC. In the next version of Cushy Stock there will be ability to show metadata separately for IPTC and XMP.

I use Exifer, sometimes editing in Irfanview to change the order or include a keyword in a certain position, depending on the image.

I would have answered the poll but I don't use any of those .. I actually use Pro Photo Tools 2 for IPTC .. it's free and can be downloaded from .. dare I say .. Microsoft

I use CS4 until Lightroom makes a new version that does NOT put my keywords in alfabetical order. Lightroom is perfect for caption and description, but Fotolia (and Alamy in a certain way too) wants the first 7 keywords to be the most significant ones.

Wow, I am the only one who answered the poll??
looks like it lol, and like a few of the other comments suggest I don't think all that many more will, due to the tools that almost everyone uses being missing from the list (bridge/photoshop/lightroom)

I'm using PS CS4 but it's not working for IS. I'm looking for another alternative and not Deep Meta as I would like to use it for all sites.

same here - it's a great freebie, does multiples, easy to use and even has geocoding
i keep my captions & images in an excel sheet, so they're easily avaialble as templates for new shoots, etc

Cathy, what is not working for you in PS CS4 for IS? For me, it's only disambiguation that I have to do in DeepMeta. If I use all the keywords from IS CV, I could do without that but I can't blame that on PS CS4.

I've used Fotostation for the last ten years - it's probably more "pro" based captioning software, but worth the price. You can get a free 30 day fully useable download at www.fotoware.com (http://www.fotoware.com).
For batches of pics it's great - if anyone else uses it I'd be interested in knowing how they get on. I should be a sales rep I've plugged it that many times.
It's straightwforward to use as well.

Off topic but relevent, anyone that has problems with keyword spelling there is a website I found, controlled vocabulary (http://www.controlledvocabulary.com/), where you purchase and plug-in wordsets for software like PhotoShop etc:

I use Prostocmaster, the free edition. Even if u don't use it for upload, it works wellfo metadata !! Stu :)

copy and past with Cushy Stock
maybe changing in Cushy Stock the keyword sorting
and the upload to most of the agencies with FTP through Cushy Stock

I have used exifer in the past, but found that it was damaging/removing clipping paths from Photoshop files, so you may want to be cautious with exifer if you utilize clipping paths
