As I was "playing" with the latest version I realized I still had my test site running as well as my live site.

I deleted my test site.  I suggest others do as well, while we think about it.

Remember not to link from your live sites to test sites, because they will appear in network directory. They can be disabled in marketing page, but sometimes it is hard to deternime, if is test or not. Opposite direction is ok, you can play with your test network and link to live sites.

And my test site is still active.

My test site is also still active.  I was considering using it to test new versions of plugins to make sure there were no problems.  I did have a question about how this affects the SEO process.  My test site is a sub directory of my production site.  Does that show up on the site map?

Ensure you have checked option "Discourage search engines from indexing this site" in Settings/Reading. Most crawlers honor it (some minor don't). And place file "robots.txt" in main folder, with

User-agent: *
Disallow: /

Site shouldn't affect SEO, it doesn't appear it site map.

Thia may be a dumb qeustion and I'm sure it's been answered elsewhere, but if/when SY gets installed by non-stock people (ie. musicians, software or any other download seller), do those sites get automatically added to our "whole" network pages? The auto generated page that shows every site?

If anyone from our network will be linking to them, they will be visible. Here I have  list of Symbio sites:
http://symbiostock.info
Every day this site is fetching symbiocard from all listed sites and adds new items found in their network.
Of course other people may build separate network and it will be invisible here, until someone from "our" network will decide to link with it

Ok, I guess I'm just not understanding how one can be part of one network and not another. I have the people i've added to my site, but then I get the "listings" page with what appears to be all the sites. How is that grabbed? I'm not sure I want to list every site off of mine. I'd prefer to just link to the sites I've chosen to link to.

We had a discussion in V1 about how if there are substandard or undercutting sites, they'd get shunned if we chose. Or sites that are too similar in products even. I think we should be able to edit who appears listed on our individual sites.

You may have up to 10 sites in your network list, and this is "your" network. Marketing page has list of sites, that is made in this way: all of your 10 sites from your network is scanned, and every site from their network lists is added. Then each of these sites may be scanned again, and new sites may be found. When someone will search for something on your site, will see results only from your site, 10 network sites, and max 5 promoted sites, if keyword will match something in their "Promoted Keywords".  This list in marketing page is some kind of help, you may decide, which site result will be displayed in that 5 positions (Promote), and maybe find site, that you will add to your network. You may also exclude them (even all). Now all sites are promoted by default, this options are not working yet in  current version.  All of this is working in one direction, you have no control, who has your site in network list and who is diplaying your results.

Fair enough. Thanks for the info!

right, now neither promote nor exclude are working -- but I think one default a should be promote all rather than site owners have to constantly adjust, and let the search randomly choose up to 5 that fit

also, for many search terms there will be few of the main network sites with matches and only a few of all the other sites -- eg, 'green sari'

I'm in my second day of building my new site, using Clean Theme (which is nice!). I've used WP and various themes on other sites before, so the process isn't new.

When I first installed SYS, I took the advice to set up a file called /testing, and that's where all my stuff is at present. But I'd like to get out of that now and work on the site "live". I'm sure it's easy but I don't have a clue how to get out of /testing mode. I need guidance on that, please!!

Also... right now my new URL only shows up on a generic Bluehost site filled with ads. When I deactivate the /testing file, will the actual URL go live??? If not, what do I have to do to make that happen?

I tried to find answers in the SYS Forum and this is the only thread that seems to address the issue. But I didn't find info here on actually HOW to deactivate a test site. It just says we should do it.

Can somebody who's been through this already please clue me in? Thanks in advance if you can!

if by file you mean /testing is a directory under your root, then just create anothersubdir /livesymsite ad install wp & sym there  you can then just delete the previous one (technically you should get rid of the other wp database too, but not really necessary)

what's your url?  most likely the current url isn't pointing to your testsite and you need to change that on the host -- usually something like /public-html/mysite

if the ads still show up, it's because you don't have a default page installed -- these lower cost hosts play on novice users and grab some extra exposure  for themselves -- it should actually show a file called index.htm or index.php

if you dont know how to do that we can walk you thru it

Thanks so much for your willingness to help. I ended up calling Bluestock and had them walk me through the steps I needed to do. Might have figured it out on my own eventually, but that saved some time.

Now... if I can just work out a few other kinks!

I have always found Blue Host support to be very helpful. Glad you got it sorted! I can totally relate...I had many kinks in the beginning too. Hang in there.  :)

The Symbiostock network is full of helpful people.  Just ask and I am sure someone can either help or point you in the right direction.  They have been a huge help to me as I setup my site.

Have fun.
