Title: Symbiostock Network: 74 Independent Sites, 80,000 Images
Post by: Leo Blanchette on June 15, 2013, 03:29
This thread has evolved a bit! Looks like the question has become:

100,000 by September?

There's certainly no rush. Quality over quantity!

See attached pole.

This is what my site (and everyone else's site) aggregates and random. 37 sites and 32,000 images are randomly accounted for by my site, so there are probably more out there.

Could we initiate a challenge? 64,000 images in 2 weeks. 14 days.

It took 3 months to get in the vicinity of 32,000 images while in development. Now that things are becoming stable could we double it in 2 weeks?

www.symbiostock.net (http://www.symbiostock.net)

...is hosting the party :D

But things are still going awesome. Join the fun.

I still have 700 images that need to be uploaded, wont be in two weeks as I need to do SEO per image, but I will do my best.

Symbiostock is at 56,000 images already.

56000?

LOL

Bamboozled again. Never underestimate that innocent looking little rogue strawberry.

Ok, cut that in half.

Contest is still on. Rogue strawberry does not count in results. This just got challenging.

I updated the numbers.

Half is too low, there is about 32000 images now. Strawberry has only 23700, because many sites still run 2.4.1 version, with 24 images in csv.

That should definitely be a consideration for everyone. Which makes it that more challenging. The network thrives in search due to everyone's keeping that regimen.

Yes, now my search engine pretends Symbiostock site, and everyone can add it to network list (2.4.3 version required) . Side effect: is has number of indexed images in symbiocard and it sums with other results.

Network scanning is often very slow to me too. It is because (in my case) curl on my server sometimes has problems with DNS, especially with bluehost sites :)
It happens from time to time, and fetching one symbiocard takes 20-30s. So I think that network scanner should work somehow different. Maybe like my search engine: every hour takes only one site and adds new found friends to list.

Oh ok. I'll add something in the middle for shady sue to vote on.

Edit - nevermind. It messes up the pole and makes it look confusing.

Edit - Your right! I do need sleep. Anyway, have fun. Back to life again for a few days.

The first 100 images I uploaded dont have SEO, they have been indexed yet, the one where I did SEO with the Yoast, do already show up. So I need to delete those images and redo them, and then add the other 600 new images. Oemph.

Symbiostock.net is the community hub Mat Dixon is working on. Maybe you can knock on his door and it will finish  :)

Don't know what crashed everything. Email is still coming back online too. A call to Inmotion got things going again anyway.

Even as it stands, Matt is riding on the SEO coattails of SY but doesnt actually sell any items off his SY travelwitness.net site. He directs buyers to his stocksy site. So maybe he is going to set up the rest of the stocksy crew to also make use of SY seo? If so, I hope the rest of us get to ride on the coattails of stocksy traffic the same way.  :D

Under all the confusion (and I have to wade through it sometimes too) its quite simple.

1. Sell your images direct, no strings attached. http://www.symbiostock.com/about/ (http://www.symbiostock.com/about/)
2. Network with other microstockers - which creates benefits too many to name.

Regarding confusion of functionality - I've set up an optional service: http://www.symbiostock.com/symbiostock-site-setup-services-maintenance-assistance/ (http://www.symbiostock.com/symbiostock-site-setup-services-maintenance-assistance/)

Although its likely possible you could do it easily yourself, and you'd probably just need me to alter some basic settings at the worst.

oh - and tutorials http://www.creativembers.com/ (http://www.creativembers.com/)

Hi Symbio community ;D

Firstly I want to congratulate Leo for all the work on the latest months and now all contributors joining building their own Symbio websites, it is just impressive, well done!

Secondly I am sure this was talked before but I have been thinking why don't we all join together in just one site instead of everybody working on their own sites?

I understand that working on our own we can work on the design, the prices, the collection, make it a little like our home but I believe the audience would grow a lot faster if we had just one site, something like an agency, everybody would be free to upload whatever they wish, pick their own prices or we could come up all with an agreement and of course we would share expenses (hosting, domain, etc etc)

I guess it would be the real cooperative, sorry if I am having a dumb idea, sure you guys wonder about this before

best of luck everybody!

You can also look here:

http://www.microstockgroup.com/symbiostock/ (http://www.microstockgroup.com/symbiostock/)

As we were all setting up our sites, at some point or another someone had the same issue already that you might run into. Basically you start out getting an ISP host (bluehost has been recommended) then you set up wordpress on that hosts server. From there, you load the SY theme.

The closest we'll be coming to that is "hub sites" that do just what your asking. They will import preview images, create their own watermarks, and interface with everyone's sites to allow payments and downloads remotely. Also there is a paid promoter on the way www.picturengine.com (http://www.picturengine.com) which will be tested out too. They've almost finished their Symbiostock connected system.

So really anything is possible - the Symbiostock tool is being made to cater to as many options and ideas as possible. The marketing feature allows what you are suggesting.

As things mature people will have more themes and more convenience, and I'm sure someone interested enough can set up a Symbiostock site hosting service which takes away 100% of the burden for people, allowing them to upload their images and not have to do anything else.

And also, what you are suggesting Luis, sounds almost like another agency. If some people are responsible for working on the site and maintaining it, etc., next thing you know, a percentage of sales are going to be asked for to pay for that work. I think your key words that explain why SY is NOT what you are talking about are these: "we could come up all with an agreement and of course we would share expenses (hosting, domain, etc etc)". It might be very tough to come up with terms that everyone would agree on. SY is the best of both worlds.

And if at any point someone feels like SY is not working for them, they can just disconnect from the network. They of course would suffer SEO penalties, but at least all the work of having their own site up would be done. It would just be a matter of rebuilding the SEO (no easy task, for sure). I, for one, feel more independent having it the way it is. But that doesn't mean if someone comes up with the model you are talking about that I wouldnt be interested. That's the freedom of being independent...we can put our images anywhere we want and still make 100% of the royalties.

no Cathleen I am not suggesting another agency, I just wish we could all join in one site and we would work together uploading and promoting, I haven't talked about royalties and such, I believe it is possible once SY seems to be made of a very good group of contributors, honest and hard working people so I don't think we would have much worries like ALL agencies deposit on us, anyway it was just an idea, we never thought a person would create SY so perfectly, like Leo said anything is possible :)

I have to admit I'm intrigued by the whole Sy thing, but for the time being I'm watching from the sidelines.  It looks like it's a fair amount of work for a payoff that, at the moment, isn't there yet... unless I'm missing something?  When the threads start popping up with people saying they're getting daily sales, I'll be motivated to jump in.  For now, I'll watch and wish everyone the best.

It looks like a lot of work because there are so many sites being opened and people posting about everything. If I look at my own work, it took me a few good hours to set it up. But once its set up, its maintenance and uploading images. I think people that were engaged with the initial testing and bug fixing had indeed a lot of work to do. But if you step in now, its really quick and easy considering you can build a complete working website without any involvement of a web developer or having to have programming / coding skills. The more people join the network, the more chance of getting towards daily sales. If everybody watches from the side lines, the growth and momentum slows down. But I understand your point.

But now I have, and I am not now adding the other 500. Ugh, cant wait for it to be complete. I can see hits on my images via google by the way.

Same here. I have only 250 images online now. (still 3000 to go). I put some careful painful  ;) effort into SEO and I see results. Several google searches bring up my images on page one. Traffic from outside MSG is picking up accordingly. First sale seems to be just a matter of time. Can't wait, though  ;D

I have to say, I made a lot of mistakes when I see keywords and titles on my older images. I think it has definitely cost me sales on the agencies. The good thing about it is, that the titles are now so much better, it might actually benefit me now selling direct.

That's only his opinion. Maybe he didn't spend enough time looking around. There are always going to be people criticizing, we might as well get used to it. I think your posting links to some of those excellent sites was the right thing to do. People will look and judge for themselves.

Besides, in marketing, negative publicity is just as good as positive publicity. It makes people look to see what everyone's talking about.  :)

He has a point - it isn't easy to find what you want (for now) - but it doesn't matter at this stage.
All that's important is the image database is growing and the theme is stable and evolving into a viable platform for selling images.
When the database is big enough the search / hub sites should take care of finding the right image quickly. It will be a different ball game when that happens.
I would guess 70% - 80% of the entire micro market comes from the top 1000 contributors - if 500 adopted the Theme things could change dramatically.

The point wasnt it not easy to find an image you want, but that all images are crap and that its hard to find a good one. But I am butting out of that thread, that guy is seriously nasty. Brrrr.

Sorry for taking this off topic.

ON: Why is the marketing tab in SYS lagging a few thousand images? 62,219 vs 64,570

Besides, in marketing, negative publicity is just as good as positive publicity. It makes people look to see what everyone's talking about.  :)

So true.  If we can get people talking ( and looking) then we will create a buzz!!!... And I have no idea who he is and his credentials but he does come off like a pompus twit

Bully!!

Well, I've got another 1,000+ to add to the 450 or so already up on my site. And I'm planning a long photo trip later this year, which will add even more to the number and variety. Doin' what I can to help. :-)

Symbiostock rocks.

We missed the first goal. I say thats great. It just shows people are more interested in quality.

If we make it to 85,000 and the next 5k are super high quality, its an accomplishment :D still fun to watch though.

I think it will take awhile to get to 100K, since the avg # of images is 1000, and half the sites have about 400 or less, so we'll need another 20 - 40 sites added.  (not that quantity is anything to encourage for its own sake, it's just an easy # to follow)

There have been over 20,000 images added in the past month.

If we extrapolate, that means there will be about 100,000 images around the first or second week of September.

I am at around 400 right now but still have 3000 to add. Hope I manage to do 200 to 300 in August. My goal is to have 1000+ pics online by end of September.

I just started with a very basic site look and about 30 online images. Still testing, finetuning, and learning.
Planning to add 1,000 images this month.

Don't underestimate the adoption speed and growth potential. The Symbiostock growth will be steep and exponential.
10,000 images in last two weeks vs 20,000 images added last month vs 65,000 images in previous 5 months.
I can see 120,000 images by end of August, and 250,000 by year end.

[Edited on Aug 15] At 300 images now
