Before we all load too many images maybe we should share some thoughts on watermarks?

My thoughts - I want my watermark to identify me as well as make my image a little more difficult to use without  extra work for whoever thinks it would fit their use without their paying for it (after that we have no control but at least it has been paid for once)

The big sites don't always need to put their names/web addresses on their watermarks because they are so well known (usually) and readily identifiable but I think we probably do so it is our signature as well as a watermark.

For some reason (networking and easy identification mostly) I thought that most people would probably base their watermark around the default SS, but it seems this is not the case, is it something we should think about?

I think it would be awesome to see people discussing watermark drafts before committing for years to come.

Watermarks should serve their function without getting in the way of image details, and help branding a bit.

I'd love to see a watermarking thread. Its one of the more fun enhancements to do.

This is perfect timing. Desiging a watermark is one of the next projects on my list.  I may come up with a few options and post them to see what everyone thinks is most effective.

This is what I have settled with (first few don't have it exactly like this but from now on they should)

If anyone likes the idea I can make the psd file available so you can put your own details in - the colours just layers while I was testing it

can you share the size you built your watermark?

edit: Nevermind, I see one is 522x522 and the other is 590 x 546. I am assuming the site will up or downsize accordingly.

edit yet again: I just found the branding templates. Thanks so much to you guys for doing this!

Good thread!

Initially my watermark was a full square, taking advantage of the biggest possible area to cover several parts of the image.

Then I realized the problem with panoramic images since the watermark won't be re-sized  (which is ok though) but half of my watermark was cut off.

I therefore settled for a 4x2 aspect ratio watermark including my logo, name and URL - I guess this way I have all bases covered AND it's a pain to remove the watermark.

Advanced Photoshop users can always get rid of watermarks so it's not something that can be prevented 100% anyway unless you use areas with less than 50% transparency because then the retoucher would have to recreate the content again which more of a pain - but often not impossible...

It's me again.

Well, i change watermark, or at least, i try.

Using FTP, i put new watermark PNG file at address below

http://hitvectors.com/wp-content/themes/symbiostock/inc/classes/image-processor/

Go to control panel and change current default SS watermark for my "hitwatermark.png" file. Save it.

Go to my site to test, but still old watermark is over image.

Any ideias?

Yes - the watermark is added during file upload and processing. Changing your watermark file makes no difference to images already in the system

In your Symbiostock settings page - what is the path name in the third box - above where it says

"Transparent PNG image (522 x 522px). If not supplied, default watermark (Symbiostock S) will be used. "

you might need to change - symbiostock_logo.png to hitwatermark.png if you have not done it for the final bit of the path

Thanks Tinny, but it's ok like below:

I try to reload page, but old watermark still there. I check file permissions also, but but both files have the same permissions.

I will do some new uploads to test. Thanks again
