Title: Network Promotion - Food Photos
Post by: djpadavona on July 29, 2013, 11:07
Here's another Symbiostock network promotion article I put together this morning, with a focus on sources of food photography -

http://dpstockphotos.com/pictures-of-food-3-tasty-websites/ (http://dpstockphotos.com/pictures-of-food-3-tasty-websites/)

I encourage more people to start writing quick posts like this. It took me no more than 20 minutes to put together. Start by promoting your work, then mix in the work of a few network friends, and create a post that might be helpful to designers/bloggers looking for affordable photos in a category. And once you've written it, make sure you post it to a few social networks to get it some attention.

Other topics can include hot-button topics such as the way X agency treats its contributors...and by the way here are 5 artist direct download sites so you can support your fellow artists rather than X agency. Whatever encourages you to write, go for it.

As always my door is open if anyone has questions on writing promo pieces like this. Just shoot me a PM or post a reply here.

Do you buy the images or just get the thumbnails and link to the images?

Good idea, I really need to get  more blogs out.

when you search at http://symbiostock-search.com (http://symbiostock-search.com)  it creates thumbnails which also have the caption as a link
http://cascoly.com/trav/turkey/nemrut-dag.asp (http://cascoly.com/trav/turkey/nemrut-dag.asp)

what I've been doing is searching on a topic I need, eg 'nemrut', then just extracting my images. ( do a 'view source' of the results page & cut & paste to your new html) if there's interest I can make the search specific to a site to make it easier for searches like 'food'

SOrry to take this off topic, but that means anyone can take a thumbnail and use it in a blog? I know thats always possible, but that means the bloggee is quite useless as a size to sell then. The buyer just has to take them of the search page and he is done.

I purchased the bloggees when I wrote this blog http://semmickphoto.com/2013/06/10/symbiostock-fair-trade-image-licenses/ (http://semmickphoto.com/2013/06/10/symbiostock-fair-trade-image-licenses/) and if I write a blog and use some images, I will have to purchase them.

Yes, that is why I am considering adding a watermark to the thumbnails as well.

How can you add a watermark to the thumbnails?

How can you add a watermark to the preview?
I thought that was already the case, because I have two watermarks, a small and a large one.

I can't see any option for adding a watermark to the thumbnails. Only to the main images

How can you add a watermark to the thumbnails?

I believe that you would need to change the code for that.

There are two watermarks in this folder /www/wp-content/themes/symbiostock/inc/classes/image-processor  a large one and a small one

But only the large one is used I believe.

hmm but somehow, this would need additional coding...............
That's the problem, I can't do that.

a big difference I see is that you posted the images, but they don't link directly to leo's image pages; so I would expect someone to pay me if they used my images this way.  in Dan's blog, the PURPOSE of the post was specifically to highlight the sites whose images he used, so it seems entirely appropriate, and well within the bounds of fair use

however, the images that are produced by the global search engines produce links to the original sites -- that's the whole idea of a global search. this is no different than google images -- they let you see the image in situ, OR just the original image - which may or may not have a watermark.  anyone can do the same thing even without the global search sites, since the data is available to anyone who knows where to look - it's what allows the network to work in the first place.

when I extract contact sheets for use on my site, I only use my images, or those for which I've been given permission by the owner

personally, i'll let anyone use my thumbnails on their sites as long as they link directly to my site.   i'd rather give away the blog size (for which I only charge $1 anyway), in order to get my portfolio seen and sell the large sized images.  I've only had a few sales thus far - but all have been the large size

Actually, you have a good point, I am no longer uploading to agencies, so now I have better control over who gets my images so I can track them better. Now I will know if the use is legal or illeagle, certainly on my newer images.

If you click on any of the hot linked images, you go to their purchase page. I always use the purchase page as the Custom target URL.
