From Alamy's forum:
(only on request) Alamy is able set 'Geo-Restrictions', thus preventing your images being seen and sold in Russia, for anyone who wishes to make this minuscule gesture of solidarity with Ukraine. Email [email protected]

Only for information: do with it, or don't what you will.
Some have said they will donate any money they receive from Russia or Belarus to charities benefitting the Ukranians.

Awful to punish Russian people and businesses simply because of their nationality. Plenty of Russians disagree with the war, but cancel culture seems to be normal nowadays.

In the Netherlands there are stories of Russian supermarkets being harassed, Russian children bullied at school, people on the street being yelled at because they 'look or sound Russian'. In fact, a woman from Moldova was scolded for speaking Romanian (which sounded Russian to the Dutchman who yelled at her). In their misguided anger, people have lost their minds.

One additional suggestion was to donate at least all your earnings from Russia (=blood money) to a humanitarian organization able to support Ukraine and its refugees.

I chose https://novaukraine.org/

A lot of russians are leaving their country through Finland, before their country goes back to what it was during communism.. a prison !!

The Economist reached a similar conclusion:

Just got the answer from Alamy:

Weve now added the geo-restriction to your account, so you wont see any direct sales to the territory of Russia.

Does that mean that they will sell it, but you don't see it and you will get no commission from it? Lol then :)

No, and you know it.

Even if, as I said above, I don't want any blood money from Russia.

I'm posting again, the link to that Ukrainian charity. Your donation will be more appreciated than your Lol:

Chill down a bit Zero. I am just asking you a question because you state literally that you won't see it but it doesn't say it's not being sold. So what is it they do actually at Alamy's?

And do you know, that you are almost hijacking these whole site with your Ukraine frustration, right?

They restrict sales based on geography as explained by the OP.
You can't see things that don't exist.

I also said that you have no reason to laugh out loud because even if I alone don't get money from Russia, I don't care because I don't want to have anything to do with Russian blood money.

I also suggested that you better do some good, instead of laughing:
https://novaukraine.org/
Btw, donations to Ukrainian charities were also suggested on the same forum and topic indicated by the OP. They proposed to donate to: https://www.dec.org.uk/

This is no hijacking, but strictly on topic.

.... even if I alone don't get money from Russia, I don't care because I don't want to have anything to do with Russian blood money.

You are contradicting yourself here. Or it is that Alamy doesn't sell your photos to Russia or they do but you don't get to see it and receive any money for it. So which of the two is it? Because your first remark, which was a quote of Alamy, as you say, clearly states that you will only not see the sales and not that they are not going to sell it. Or did you misquote their reply?

This is no highjacking, but strictly on topic.
You are ranting all over the place in almost every topic about Russia :)
Maybe we decide on one topic and do all the discussion there instead of the 9 topics about this subject currently on the front page.
And maybe other people that have started those topics can move it to Off-topic where it belongs by now.

There is no contradiction. Let me try again, sometimes things have to be repeated to go through:

What I told you is that even if I'm the only one not getting money from Russia, in other words, Alamy keeps everything (reason why you laughed out loud)... I don't care. That's because I don't want to have anything to do with the Russian blood money.

What happens is that Alamy is restricting my work to be directly sold in Russia.
Is that clear?

I'm posting the two charities again, I'm encouraging you to donate to:

https://www.dec.org.uk/
https://novaukraine.org/

I'm not ranting. I am on topic.

It would be if you didn't say "even if" and if you didn't quote this weird sentence from Alamy which is interpretable in multiple ways.

Do you have a link stating clearly, from Alamy itself, that they will not sell your pictures to Russia if you ask them to set 'Geo-Restrictions' for Russia?

You must admit, what Alamy says is distinctly ambiguous, and very strange wording, although in this case, hopefully the first part of the sentence is correct:
"Weve now added the geo-restriction to your account, so you wont see any direct sales to the territory of Russia."
It would have been more logical and usual to say "... ... so your files won't be directly sold to the territory of Russia"

Probably just bad wording, like that quoted on another thread by Sean, where Dreamstime says on their homepage:
Headline: "Help charities fight the war against Ukraine!"
Which could definitely be read in two ways* if taken alone, though presumably they are actually supporting Ukraine, as the next sentence is:
"5% of our revenue will be donated to charitable organizations helping Ukraine as a War Relief Stimulus."

*If you doubt the ambiguity of the headline, how would you interpret: "Help charities fight the war against Hunger"?

Yes, I agree that it could have been better formulated, but as you said, the first part of the sentence was more than enough to confirm what I requested them to do:

Dear Alamy,

In the light of the recent Russian aggression of Ukraine, I can't accept being part of the Russian war economy.

Please restrict the sale of my work in Russia.

In case clarifications are still needed:

Geo-Restrictions use IP recognition software to block your images from appearing from certain IP addresses. Therefore, your images cant be licensed from the territory of Russia.

No problem. I wish I could do the same with Shutterstock.
I just had 3 sales from Moscow today.  >:(
I suspect that these are part of a subscription pack paid before the sanctions became effective.

I guess I have to block Alamy thread also.
There are crap posters all over this entire forum.
It's not only crap posting... Some of your comments are so irrational and full of hatred.
I don't think Russian money is blood money. Is American money blood money? I mean, look at Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria... the list goes on. Is Turkish money also blood money, since they fight Kurds? Is Australian money blood money, because they celebrate the day they defeated Aboriginal people as Australia Day? Should we ban republican party supporters (or vice versa, democrats) from buying our products? We could go on and on, but it really gets down to this: Cancel Cuture.
I am sick of cancelling and I am sick of your crap posting.
You are not adding any value to the discussion and to this forum.
I also think all this is very, very unprofessional.

No, this is not "cancel culture". It's "cancel war".

But no worries, even if sales to Putin's state own media (= ALL media) and propaganda machine are blocked, there is always piracy.

https://torrentfreak.com/russia-will-probably-legalize-some-software-piracy-to-mitigate-sanctions-220307/

From this point of view I agree that this is just a symbol, far from being an effective war deterent.

Otherwise, I encourage you to do whatever you consider necessary to keep your conscience clean.

One more thing: consider donating to the Ukrainian war victims (links above).
That would add real real value to your post and would be a very professional thing to do.

So here's another way to shoot ourselves in the foot?
I don't know if I have had any Russia sales ever, but I won't ask my work to be boycotted.

Edited to add: Much prefer Dreamstime's take on this.
