Hi all,

Alamy has certain restrictions as to what type of images can be licenced for sale on its website (e.g. RM image on Alamy cannot be sold simultaneously on microstocks as RF, etc.).

In your experience, have you ever come across (unintentionally, of course) to a situation where your photo was put on Alamy as RM and at the same time it was on microstock as RF/editorial? Does Alamy track this down? In other words, how does it enforce this rule/limitation and what could be the consequences if you get caught?

I asked because I just realized that a couple of my RM photos on Alamy are accidentally put as RF on micros (or vice versa, just overlooked this somehow with thousands of photos) and while I'm about to delete them from portfolio on Alamy, I'm concerned that some sanctions could be imposed on me anyway.

Thanks for your feedback.

I don't know the answer to your specific question, sorry.

But in case you don't know, deleted files can still be sold by Alamy for six months (to cover someone having comped a file but having a long lead time). To make sure no-one else can find your file after you delete it, remove all caption, description, keyword, location etc information BEFORE hitting the delete button: you can't do it afterwards.

Not great advice really, as any customer who already may have seen the shot / made a note of the ref / downloaded a comp will still be able to find the image using the reference code or download link.

Don't worry - these mistakes can happen from time to time and we can help! Your best bet in this case is to let us know which images are affected and we can either delete them immediately for you or switch the licence over to RF (where possible). We can also check to see if the images are already in a sales path, e.g if a customer has already downloaded the comp for potential use.

Just drop us an email at [email protected] or PM me the image refs here and I'll take care of it.

Cheers

It happened to me to set unintentionally some photos as RM on Alamy
Then I wrote them asking to change it in RF and they did it it very fast.
So yes their support is very good.

Their system is a little tricky by the way It would be more simple to have the possibility to set a kind of licence as preference, and then change it for the single image if necessary.

But all the Alamy system is unnecessarily complex.
It remembers me the old French adage "Why to do it simple when you can do it complex?"

You can set a default licence - just go to Manage Images, select "Defaults and Pseudonyms" from the top and make your choice.  :)

With the release of the new tools (coming soon) you'll be able to select RF editorial too.

Alamy support is excellent. They are polite, helpful and prompt - you couldn't ask for more. I recently wrote to ask if they could cancel the deletion of images I had scheduled late last year (when I was thinking of making some images exclusive to 500px, before KK Thompson nuked that notion). I couldn't see where to do that from the contributor interface.

They wrote back that it would have to be done their end and shortly afterward that it had been done. I wish it weren't so exceptional to have great contributor support, but kudos to Alamy for theirs!

Wow! Did I just read and understand that correctly? We'll be able to upload editorial images which we currently have under an RF license elsewhere?
That's fantastic news if I've understood correctly. The vast majority of my port is editorial, but I cannot currently upload those to Alamy because they have to be RM if editorial.
Kind regards, david.

that i agree too, but then again elena (if i recall of feature pics), linda of yay, john griffith of cutcaster,
.. all excellent in CR. but CR is not the only impetus to submitting your work there...
sales is.

and to give credit where it's due, ss has always been prompt in responding to their queries (via Contact us). they may not come here to do so, but why would they if you know how to direct
your personal issues to them via their Contact box???

Yes, I have set RF under"Default attributes and pseudonym management", and chosen my default pseudonym too.
But every time that I use the batch to change the attributes of more files I have to reset up the licence kind and the pseudonym.

Yes, but we'd still never advise doing this because it doesn't solve the issue. Also, the image could be found by someone clicking on the contributor name within a comp to show their full portfolio. :)

If there is ever a situation like this it's always best to contact us as we can usually help out.

OK, I didn't know that. I've found a couple of times that I've stupidly uploaded the same file twice (several weeks or months apart), and I've always just deleted one as above. Hope it doesn't happen again, but if it does, I'll make contact. Tx.

Great news about the RF editorial.

Does the change mean there will now be a simpler way to note files as editorial use RM as well?

And I can vouch for Alamy's excellent customer service. Last few weeks I uploaded snow storm photos taken with my property released house - or with items that don't need a release - via Live News so they ended up as RM but I wanted them to be RF and they went in and changed them all within a day or so. I've been with Alamy since 2009 and they've always been pleasant to deal with. I'm happy that they are rising in the poll here and I'm seeing much more activity on my files - particularly many more zooms - so in my eyes they are moving in the right direction.

You should be able to leave this and just use the batch editor to change the attributes you want...
