I thought I would start a new thread as its no longer a case of istock vs Shutterstock
(24th July) [17th July]
1 Fotolia 1,013,804 (977,382) [944,904] increase 36,422
2 istock 956,000 (940,763) [926,538] increase 15,237
3 Shutterstock 923,690 (906,228) [891,452] increase 17,462
4 Dreamstime 520,000* (510,000) [490,000+] increase 10,000 *27th July
5 Big Stock Photo 430,000 (424,000) [417,000] increase 6,000
6 123 rf 300,000+
7 Can Stock Photo 242,798 (240,520) [236,056] increase 2,278
8 Stockxpert 170,000?
9 Stockphotomedia 68,875 (67,325) [66,235] increase 1,550
10 Featurepics 47,253 (43,962) increase 3,291
11 Gimmestock 46,260 (45,835) increase 425
Yes in a week Featurepics have overtaken Gimmestock and have a bigger increase than Can Stock.
FT at that rate of growth they could break 2 million in 6 months
Anyone tried to delete their account at Gimmestock??
-
thanks again for the info. It is nice to see an overview like this.
-
Anyone tried to delete their account at Gimmestock??
Not yet, but I may in some months if it remains so bad. The same goes for other sites such as Microstock, Area Image, Scandinavian Stock and SPM.

Well its Monday the start of a new week so how are those microstock companies doing?
1 Fotolia 1,048,546 {1,013,804} (977,382) inc 34,742
2 istock 970,255 {956,000} (940,763) increase 14,255
3 Shutterstock 940,323 {923,690} (906,228) increase 16,633
4 Dreamstime 530,000# {520,000*} (510,000) incr 10,000 #1st August *27th July
5 Big Stock Photo 438,000 {430,000} (424,000) increase 8,000
6 123 rf 300,000+
7 Can Stock Photo 244,776 {242,798} (240,520) increase 1,978
8 Stockxpert 170,000?
9 Stockphotomedia 69,765 {68,875} (67,325) increase 890
10 Featurepics 49,802 {47,253} (43,962) increase 2,549
11 Gimmestock 46,691 {46,260} (45,835) increase 431
So FT still double the number of new images of iStock + SS
-
The start of another week looks like everyone is uploading their holiday snaps
1 Fotolia 1,085,190 [1,048,546] {1,013,804} inc 36,644
2 istock 988,501 [970,255] {956,000} increase 18,246
3 Shutterstock 958,473 [940,323] {923,690} increase 18,150
4 Dreamstime 550,000* [530,000#] {520,000} incr 20,000 *11th August #1st August
5 Big Stock Photo 446,000 [438,000] {430,000} increase 8,000
6 123 rf 300,000+
7 Can Stock Photo 248,429 [244,776] {242,798} increase 3,653
8 Stockxpert 170,000?
9 Stockphotomedia 70,452 69,765 {68,875} increase 687
10 Featurepics 52,037 49,802 {47,253} increase 2235
11 Gimmestock 46,784 46,691 {46,260} increase 93
Who is still uploading to Gimmestock can't be many though there is queue of 400 FT increases by 78% of their whole portfolio every week. I think for small sites its best not to post image numbers.
So maybe on Friday we shall the millionth image/(exclusive illustration) at iStock

The latest Stockxpert newsletter reports that they now have over 200,000 images.

Since this hasn't been done in a few weeks (and I believe fintastique is away on business), I have decided to try my hand at this and give the latest figures.
Fintastique: I hope that you don't mind.
Rank | Agency | Current Count | Previous Count | Increase |
1 | Fotolia | 1,195,751 | 1,085,190 | 110,561 |
2 | iStockphoto | 1,036,911 | 988,501 | 48,410 |
3 | Shutterstock | 1,006,608 | 958,473 | 48,135 |
4 | Dreamstime | 596,762 | 550,000 | ~46,762 |
5 | BigStockPhoto | 474,000 | 446,000 | ~28,000 |
6 | 123RF | 400,000+ | 300,000+ | ??? |
7 | CanStockPhoto | 258,815 | 248,429 | 10,386 |
8 | Stockxpert | 211,893 | 200,000+ | ~11,893 |
9 | Stockphotomedia | 72,746 | 70,452 | 2,294 |
10 | Featurepics | 61,726 | 52,037 | 9,689 |
11 | Gimmestock | 47,375 | 46,784 | 591 |
Some thoughts:
Fotolia is still on a tear.
FeaturePics is gaining ground on Stockphotomedia
-
Nice.... Thanks StockManiac :)
-
thanks :)
-
I seem to have lost the original thread and i have missed a couple of weeks but here are the numbers today
FT 1,264,747
iS 1,055,075
SS 1,032,613
DT 610,000
BS 509,000
123 400,000
CanStockPhoto 264,470
StockXpert ??
SPM 73,091
FP 72,995
-
yeah, where DID that thread go?
You started a new one after the istock vs shutterstock thread.. but i can't find it either. Do you remember what it was called?
-
found it :)
and have merged the two.
-
I had a high rejection ratio in teh last batch at DT. Are they getting picky now? Accepted at most other sites so maybe they aren't playing the numbers game.
SS is catching istock slowly and FT continues to power away (depending on if you beleive their numbers - see other thread).
-
Leaf can you remind me where the other posts comparing number of images is hidden - wasn't there a search option here once?
FT 1,306,484
iS 1,076,000
SS 1,054,242
DT 620,000
BigStock 528,000
123 400,000+
CanStockPhoto 262,081
StockXpert 170,000+ ??
FP 79,169
SPM 75,122
So 123 finally register an increase they were stuck at 300,000 for months
-
the search is now on the right hand side under UserTools.. the third option down.
-
Well I am away on business again in Calgary at the moment so thats why there is a late posting numbers in brackets are from 18th september
FT 1,353,879 (1,264,747)
iS 1,089,000 (1,055,075)
SS 1,076,738 (1,032,613)
DT 630,000 (610,000)
BS 549,000 (509,000)
123 400,000
CanStockPhoto 267,053 (264,470)
StockXpert 170,000 ??
SPM 75,506 (73,091)
FP 85,273 (72,995)
Not surprized at the big increase at BigStock they seem to have a very high acceptance rate at the moment.
Featurepics' big increase may be an artefact as the count may include adult images as I am using a different computer.
-
FYI: StockXpert is well over 210,000. Not sure why you keep putting them back to 170,000.
-
BigStock recently recruited some 'temp' approvers to get through the Q hence the big jump in numbers
-
The latest image count from Seattle.
Sorry to all StockXpert fans for undercounting their image base where are you getting this figure from? their newsletter? how do I subscribe?
FT 1,403,576 [1,353,879] (1,264,747)
iS 1,113,000 [1,089,000] (1,055,075)

123 400,000+
CanStockPhoto 276,377 [267,053] (264,470)
StockXpert 210,000+
FP 90,073 [ 85,273] (72,995)
SPM 77,168 [75,506] (73,091)
FP have slowed down a bit closing on on 100,000
BigStock still growing fast probably due to their temp reviewers being not fussy at all.
CanStockPhoto supposedly only a 7 day queue better than a 17 day
Yes my guide does need updating its on the list for the next rainy day
-
bigstock has allready 'layed off' their temp reviewers. sometime last month.. but yeah, i am sure it helped their numbers jump
-
Sorry to all StockXpert fans for undercounting their image base where are you getting this figure from? their newsletter? how do I subscribe?
The StockXpert newsletter just came out and says that they have over 270,000 images. It looks like they are about to overtake CanStockPhoto shortly.
You can subscribe to the StockXpert newsletter by going to your account and editing your profile.

SPM starting to plateau most people must have given up on the swedes by now.
Yep StockXpert closing fast on CanStockPhoto though the latter have reduced their queue.
Thanks I will subscribe to this StockXpert newsletter to keep myself up todate

I think that a disclaimer should be added to the Fotolia #s.
It seems pretty obvious that they don't have as many images online as they claim. The true # of images is probably somewhere around 60-70% of their claim (I base this % on their approximate overall acceptance rate).
-
I suspect FT are including their free images maybe why they didn't make that big a fuss about reached 1,000,000 - no prizes.
-
I suspect FT are including their free images maybe why they didn't make that big a fuss about reached 1,000,000 - no prizes.
That is precisely why I think that there should be a disclaimer. If you added free images to Stockxpert, then they would have over 500,000 images, and jump two positions (on your chart) ending up in 6th place.
I personally think that they are just displaying the # of images that have been submitted, because the # of images that they claim (1,453,900) is very close to the highest image # that has been accepted (1,448,884).
But however they calculate their #, it is obvious that is not the true amount of images for sale on their website.

# SS seem to be closing the gap between them and iS
I wonder if that's because of the major hassle now involved in 'tagging' (as they call it) when submitting to iStock. I know my heart sinks when I see that long list and a load of 'Did you mean?'s when I come to sort out my keywords on IS

They've been closing the gap for quite some time now, but the new tagging system probably does help...
-
The StockXpert newsletter just came out and they reported over 320,000 images online.
So this now moves them up a spot (above CanStockPhoto) into 7th place.

So by the look of things FT will reach 2 million (claimed images) before DT reach the 1 M. Talk about a build up they are still about 3 months away. Maybe they are trying to stir up a surge of uploads to keep ahead of BigStock who have a worryingly high acceptance rate these days.
-
thanks again for the images update.
I really am curious how fotolia is counting their images. I know they have been asked numerous times, but they just sort of avoid the question. They sure don't have that many images when you try and search for things. i.e. the number of results that come up when you search for "student" and compare the results between istock, fotolia, and shutterstock.
-
thats right the search engin is awful.. sorry im from germany my english is bad... but fotolia is my best site there I sold Images for 200 euros a month shutterstock only 150
-
Maybe out of topic, maybe useful, but I think you shold notice this:
Web Rank by Alexa.com
Daily reach per million (averages by myself... in alexa there are graphs my months)
IS 1800
DT 450
SS 400
FT 220
BS 220
Please keep in mind these are averages by myself and they are only orientative, just to notice IS has four times visitors than DT and SS, and DT and SS have two times visitors than FT and BS.
I hope this will be useful,
Regards

The problem with Alexa ratings are:
1. they only survey people who have their search bar.
2. they include photographers as well. Not sure if they count unique hits but if someone goes to the site 5 times a day to check there stats, is that one hit or 5?
Interesting none the less.
-
i don't really see the problem with the fact that alexa only measures the hits for people with their search bar. it still accuratly shows the visits on one site in relation to another site.
hits from checking stats and forum posting is another thing however. dunno how that is measured. I believe though, when measuring reach, that person who looked at 10 pages, still only counts as one. they have another stat that states how many page views each visitor had.
-

Agree but, business are less likely to use an alexa bar (maybe i am wrong) so this is skewed towards individuals (submitters??). Sampling is fine but does the use of the alexa bar make it a random sample or does it favour certain demographics (ie is it more of a US thing? is it more individuals rather than corporates etc).
Will start a new thread.
-
yeah the us thing could be a valid argument.
But if for example it favoured desingers, and did not favour photographers, it would still give a accurate representation accross the various microstock sites, as probably the same ratio of designers to photographers are on each site... the same demographics....... maybe
however it would not work to compare a design forum against a photography forum, because the sites will not have the same demographics.

Well it would seem FT will reach 2 million (claimed) images before DT reaches 1 million actual images.
I am surprized there isn't a bigger gap between SS and Istock probably the 15/week limit will start to take affect soon

I'm not. iStock seems to breeze through the Q for exclusives, and they can upload more than 15/week.
-
and they have about a billion members as apposed to only millions at shutterstock.
note: exageration may be present in this post.

I missed a couple of weeks being in away in an internet free void but its MOnday so here are the numbers
FT 2,038,858

StockXpert 330,000 ++
CanStockPhoto 338,944

SPM 94,308
When did Fotolia break 2 million?
-
More importantly, what do those numbers mean? We shouldn't upload to IS, FT and SS because our images will get swamped in the mire, tougher competition, higher chances of rejections, harder to conceptualise new images, oversaturated market?
OR
We should upload to those sites because they're fast expanding which means they get noticed by buyers, that's where the buyers are, they take in almost anything to boost their database, sales are high on those sites and they're the best so photogs go there?
???
-
My images do quite well at FT, so I don't believe we get lost in the crowd, at least if our keywords are good. My performance at IS is better after the disambiguation thing - I'm not sure it's a coincidence or not, given that despite this, there is still a lot of keyword spamming, so things are not perfect for a buyer yet (but he can now at least have some images out of his searches).

Adelaide

*4th Jan figure so BigStock aren't catching up on DT as fast as you would think
What does it all mean?
Not a lot but at least you can see which sites still have photographers confidence and are continuing to upload.
Regarding FT's 2 million images I strongly suspect (and I am sure I am not alone) they count their free images so there isn't really 2 million images for your images to be lost in though for popular subjects on any site good keywording is vital.

Interesting data. I also read that IS has over 30k images in the queue. IS has 25k added last week alone.
And in the SS forum even some contributors with large portfolios start to notice a slowdown (while uploading more images). http://submit.shutterstock.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16101&start=0
Seems that things start to get crazy on the supply side of the business.
Whats your experience?
My sales went up in Jan, but I increased my portfolio a lot as well in Dec/Jan.

Seems that things start to get crazy on the supply side of the business.
Whats your experience?
This market is bound to become over-saturated. Not only are there increasing numbers of photographers, but they all seem to upload the same technically perfect but conceptually boring photos that they believe will become best-sellers.
The challenge to survive with increasing sales will be to see into the future, and find new areas, new angles and new motives. Smiling pretty girl with headphones apparently sells very well, but there is a limit as to how many are needed, I guess.
For the agencies, the challenge will be to find new markets, both with regards to types of customers, but even more with regards to geography. From the download time of day, it's easy to see that most of the downloads are in America, so Europe is lagging behind here. Even more so is Asia, where more than half of the world population lives. Many Asian countries are relatively poor, but not all, and it's a huge market with different needs and a different taste from the western hemisphere.
-
I really don't think that things have already to start crazy.
I guess it will become harder and harder to submit those headphones smiling babes, or those "really rare" American flags or flowers.
But there is a lot of room for new images and there are some unexploited areas.
The real problem for me is when buyers start to really complain about keyword spam.
The other day I did a search i can't remember where for "water background" and guess what, the first pic i got (first line, left column) was some pretty naked girl laying on her back
I guess we can expect some hard rejections in the future but not as soon as one can think.
The markets thing will be a natural development of this business model and I guess with time more and more European and Asian clients will arrive.
I guess and hope this will be a very competitive but profitable market in the future

... not sure what was going on at iStock ...
I've had a wodge of images approved at IS these past few days. They show up on my file management page but not in my portfolio. Nor do they appear when I search on their keywords. (And we're well outside the 24hr they allow for the database to be updated.)
I don't know if this affects the numbers, but if this is happening to everybody then thousands of images must be 'missing'
-
thanks again for the update. Shutterstock is really moving fast.
-
StockXpert now has over 448,000 images.
That is quite a jump (82,000) from last time (366,000 on 1/15). Maybe that is one reason why they are rejecting so many images recently.

Interesting, I appear to be having the same problem with a few of my images. I have a few photos that were accepted last week and they are not searchable either. One was accepted on 02/07 (#2821552) and the other on 02/08 (#2827143). Neither are findable via the search engine.
Have you reported this to admin?
EDIT: Just found a thread on IS. Admin is aware of the problem. Here is the thread in case anyone is interested:

Things seem to be slowing down at IS.
Waiting list at IS has reduced from 30,000 images to 20,000 and approval time has shrunk by a couple of days.
DT input seems to be rising.
SS still going strong and approval is fast and efficient (possibly automated).
Perhaps IS has recruited some additional inspectors. Or the flow of new images has declined given the complex upload procedure.
Time will tell.

Fotolia really needs to get serious about their numbers. IF they were serious, they would have promoted the 3mill mark - or did I miss that?
-
3 mil??? :o
-
I am concerned about FT quoting that number. It may of course be correct, but I think there are sufficient doubts to suggest that it isn't.
As a recent new contributor to FT I am actually quite pleased with sales progress. But I feel uncomfortable all the same; its something to do with this massive headline number and the fact that their forums seem to be controlled and edited like something from Nazi Germany (I do not contribute to their forums).
It has a taste of 'dishonesty' about it and I am concerned about that.
Having said these things, I am pleased to be able to see the customers who buy, and with clients like BDO Stoy Hayward, FT are clearly making some progress into the professional market.
But of all the agencies, this is the only one where I feel I cannot trust them; I have been in business a long time, and at my age one gets a feel for honesty or untrustworthiness.
Let's hope that FT will make a leap forward and start to address these things. They certainly won't attract a large number of volume photographers unless they do.
-
It has been mentioned before and I will mention it FT state the number of "online images". They don't claim to have 3 million images for sale
If a submitted image is accepted, rejected, made a free image or deleted by user a thumbnail is kept so is "online"
-
Well I believe that in business one should play fair and at least not be misleading; 3 mill images 'online' implies 'for sale' and therefore appears to be deliberately misleading.
I think it would be appropriate for FT to actually state the number of images accepted and available for sale. That would be the more professional approach.

I think LO must have overtaken some of the sites on the list. They reported reviewing 20,000 photos in a week. Would be interesting to know how many they have now.

In my opinion, Fotolia needs to be moved into 4th or 5th place.
A search for the keyword "flower" gave the following results:
SS: 143480
IS: 106227
DT: 65115
BigStock: 83571
FT: 9346
A search for the keyword "business" gave the following results:
SS: 144940
IS: 125148
DT: 114166
BigStock: 97204
FT: 9799
A search for the keyword "background" gave the following results:
SS: 435460
IS: 212687
DT: 307208
BigStock: 287812
FT: 9611
As you can see, Fotolia has far less images in their database for these popular searches than any of the other top sites.
-
Ft at position three was a guestimate they may be lower I thought 50% of their stated figure was reasonable.
I think that Fotolio has a 10,000 image ceiling on any search which gives misleading results in your searches plus they have a weighed keywords so for popular searches if a keyword isn't listed in the top 7 it won't be listed, I started obscure and then tried to widen the net.

I think that Fotolio has a 10,000 image ceiling on any search which gives misleading results in your searches...
If that is true, then that means that a large % of the images in their database will never be found by a buyer. For example, if there are 400,000 flower images in their database and only 10,000 are shown, then that means that 390,000 images will never be found (at least with that keyword).
...plus they have a weighed keywords so for popular searches if a keyword isn't listed in the top 7 it won't be listed, I started obscure and then tried to widen the net.
And if this is true, then why would they have us include more than 7 keywords???
-
My final word on this for the moment FT are probably fifth I presume they must have attracted a lot of photographers and rejected far more images that I thought. There is a 10,000 result ceiling in searches but fear not as in more refined searches photos will appear I saw some of my spring illustrations in "flower london" along with a whole series of graffiti photos with not a flowers in sight, do we need property release for graffiti? I have photos rejected in the past because of tagging.

I will be away for a few weeks so if anyone wants to take over this thread temporarily send me a site mail.
Looking at my sums after 20 days of May have elapsed this month should be the best month ever for me. Even if I don't include the funds for selling the rights for a photo at FT.
One positive note about FT they seem to have cleared their review backlog they were reviewing some last night just as I was adding the categories.
-
It has been mentioned before and I will mention it FT state the number of "online images". They don't claim to have 3 million images for sale
If a submitted image is accepted, rejected, made a free image or deleted by user a thumbnail is kept so is "online"
Online to me means online and avaliable. It is not online if they are the only ones who can see it (ie rejected and delted files). The free image theory also doesn't cut it given the large jump this week (there cant be that many giving images away free).
Are they simply multiplying by 6 (or however many different language versions they have?)

Well SS broke the 2 million barrier no bells no whistles, I forget did they make a fuss of breaking 1 million.
Not sure what the next big milestone will be I suppose DT might have a decent give away for their 2 millionth image. I ma sure as soon as I buy a new mp3 player i will win one somewhere.
FT actually experienced shrinkage either miscounting or maybe their cull of old unloaded images. I am a bit concerned about this long wait to upload. Will everyone dump 1-2 weeks of images in one mammoth FTP upload one evening overloading the servers. Rather annoying as I have soe seasonal illustrations that won't get a chance to sell at this site
I noticed CanStockPhoto have celebrated three years in the business certainly one of slow performers

Here is an Article about Dreamstime Industry record in Image submissions: http://animators.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=160314
Apparently they seem to have grown faster then SS in June.. although the time when you fintastique submitted exact numbers of weekly additions they had a slower growth.. Amazing how fast they have grown. And it seems to be right if you look at the numbers of May 21 to July 9th. In this period DT had a faster growth than SS. Thanx for the numbers fintastique!
-
yeah dreamstime seems to be doing well. they are one of my favorites - a stable site, nice interface, and good payout.
-
Yep there were no accurate figures for the first half of June as I was out of internet access :-[
A pity a few of the sites aren't inspired by some of their features such as autopopulate.
I had four $4 eps file sales at DT yesterday ;D a pity the other sites don't charge as much.

So FT should be the biggest again next week?? Or at least the week after.
Are people still disputing their numbers or do they appear correct after the big drop that came with v2?
-
I am sure they are still counting all the rejected images. A lot of people haven't been uploading to them recently, as the V2 still has problems, so I can't see how they can have all those uploads, unless they count all the rejected images as well.

A bit of a slow week for BigStock. The top four very similar growth, I wonder if DT will have a special prize for the two millionth image in about 5 weeks
-
Would be good to somehow get an updated figure for StockXpert. Since August their image ID numbers have gone up by more than a million - if correct, that's over a million submissions in two months (and explains the problems with the review process).
Perhaps Steve could give us an updated number if he reads this.
-
Is this thread still active?
FYI: Currently active on BigStock and DT with approvals pending (forever) on FT, 123rf. I'm on my third attempt to get onto IS and awaiting my 2nd attempt to get onto SS.
I wonder who gains the most new contributors per week?
Mark

Good to see you here Mark.
This thread is usually maintained by Fintastique who is presently on an extended vacation of some sort.........
-
123RF now appear to have 1.6 million images.
I'm pleased with progress at 123RF (in a modest way) - they do seem to be developing their business and attracting customers.
-
They also attract contributers. I have stopped uploading to LO, SV and FP, but still uploading to 123RF, i feel they have a future. SV will make it too, eventually, but now it is a drag to upload to them without FTP.

I am pretty happy also about the progress of 123rf fairly constants. On teh other hand no results with CanStockPhoto and BigStock
-
Extended vacation I wish, failed business adventure would be a more accurate description of the time since my last post in London. With the Alamy fiasco and all the micros being so picky about travel pictures these days.
If there is interest I will restart the counting on the 10th of December
-
I would like to see the updates :)
Hatman good to see your a regular on this site as well !

Thanks fintastique. You know, I've never really paid this thread much attention before and I'm quite surprized to see that IS doesn't have the largest library.
If they would just accept a few more from me now and then, they would have a chance to catch up. ;)

No doubt Pixart. I think I'm on my 5th application with IS just to try and get started with them ... all of my applications have been with images that have been approved by DT, BigStock and Fotolia ...

Two weeks worth of numbers, I thought I would try a new way of presenting the data, I was getting bored using a calculator.
a new iPod is imminent at DT for the 2.2 millionth image
123 at 1.5 million +
StockXpert at 1 million +

Good, I prefer this new method.

A forgotten post of mine which I used to update weekly listing how many images each site has in its portfolio (I have modified the original post to avoid more confusion)
how have things changed in the last 11 months
(http://www.fintastique.com/HMI111208.jpg)
Istock is pushed back in 4th place and DT surges ahead look out FT
I was updating my microstock guide mainly FT new rankings, so I thought I would resurrect this thread I will try to update it monthly in future.
-
WOW! Fintastique,
This list you put together or found is excellent, thank you so much for the effort. It truly shows a trend that has taken place over the past year. This is great news to photogrpahers. The more even all these guys are in sales the strength of Micro continues to grow and so do our options. You can see why Istock is restructuring their pricing it is all there in numbers. Thanks for this input I see I have to upload my collection to another site that I didn't realize had so much traffic. Your one post will increase my sales by a good margin. ;D
Thanks again,
Best,
AVAVA

AVAVA - I'm under the the impression you think this shows sales. These are number of images online, not number of images licensed.

Steve - Fintastique,
I was actually looking for a way to send you a message. I'm going to take advantage of this topic and use it to say thank you for all your efforts!
My name is Anna and I work for a small photo studio and design company in Dublin.
I started reading your blog about a year ago.
Checked in every week or so, to see if you added anything new.
Among many, many other useful hints and tips it was your blog that actually gave me the address for this forum.
You told me to wait before applying to Shutterstock. Until I had at least some images up and running with companies like Fotolia, DT and IStock.
I did that.
And in a way it is your merit that I got in the first time with 10 out of ten.
In return I'm going to buy a few more of your images.
Because I'm grateful and because they're beautiful!
Thank you!
All the best.
PS I keep on recommending your blog to everyone interested. It is well worth the read.
-
Thanks Sharply,
You are correct. I misread the post. I will take a second look and see how I can use this data. One thing it does show is the growth of imagery is still being spread evenly across all agencies and I think that is still a strong sign for the photographers but not nearly what I thought the data was. I still want to thank the poster for offering such helpful info.
Best,
AVAVA

anaire (Anna)
Thanks for the public thank you
the "blog" is linked under my signature as microstock guide lots of comparison tables sorry I never added new sites as I never signed up
-
ss added 2.4 mill images in 11 months, wow.
throw in say half? of IS being exclusive say 700k
+ a scattering of exclusive images elsewhere not on ss, say another 100k
over 3 million images hitting microstock in just under a year, pretty mindblowing imo.
-
There is still a long way to go before they catch up with alamy who currently have 14.3 million images online. I think the other micro sites will probably follow istock now and split their images in to smaller collections.
-
Quantity does not mean quality! on the contrary, many times quantity render loads of rubbish and irrelevant material. I would say out of Alamys and IS totals, you might get, what? around 25% of professional quality, no more.
Bazillions of dilletants pick up DSLRs and all of a sudden theyre Pros, nothing wrong with that. Whats wrong is that most Micros seem to accept into their files whatever is thrown at them, as if its a big deal.
Theres no big deal in having millions of shots, flaunting around the files.
Big deal lies in that a buyer with the twist of a finger and within seconds find quality and highly relevant material.
That results in a good name, PR, trust and known as dependable. A good service.

Good point lagereek.
Alamy has around 75% crap like you said, but we have to remember those are mostly old stuff when they first started. Lots of horrible travel photos with no model release, IP without PR,etc.
I think they would do themselves good but getting rid of those sh##load , as they don't do Alamy any good to keep them.
Yes, less is more. Good point , lagereek.
