Our dear friends at Getty are once again offering a take-it-or-get-out contract change to photographers. This time it's editorial. See the PDN report here (and thanks to sjlocke for posting on FB as I hadn't seen it yet).

It doesn't directly affect those of us selling via the micros, but following on from the April 2011 contract changes, again shoved down contributor's throats, it doesn't signal anything good for contributors, IMO. All this talk of more opportunity would be fine if it actually happened, but I'm not aware of any signs of Getty growing markets or volumes, just trying to get a larger slice of the pie for itself.

Here is a BJP article about the Spring changes. And some blog comments on it here. Here is an earlier MSG thread on this.

So Getty want to reduce prices and therefore give less to their contributors. Sounds like a familiar story, they themselves don't want to take any kind of hit for discounting, so they pass it on to the peons.

When the Flickr/Getty alliance thing started I made my photos there 'eligible for invitation by Getty Images'. I long since changed that to 'No thanks, I don't want to license my photos through Getty Images'.

I'm not saying that my photos would have been chosen but I don't want the option. I know people feel that they've made it if they work for Getty and I'm sure they enjoy the money. But I don't think there is any prestige in working for a company like Getty.

I think they lose money every time they lower royalties.  It takes away contributors incentive and sends some of them to their rivals.  Its a shame they have failed to learn this lesson.
