Since there seems to be a few of us going to the iStocklypse and SWPA Awards in Cannes, France. Lee Torres from MicrostockDiaries, Holger Mette and I have decided to organize a relaxed shoot and GTG just after the iStock party ends.  There is still a lot of planning to do about where and how but it WILL go forward so you can put it in your calender as a for sure happening.  Also, if you are interested in helping out organizing we are grateful for help.

I'll try to keep this post updated with all the current info so you don't have to go search through this thread for all the details.

Can't make it to this shoot?  Check out the one on June 7 in Dublin, Ireland

SHOOT INFO
=======================================
Where: Cannes, France

When: April 27, 2010
10:00 - 14:00 - French Lifestyle Shoot
14:00 - Lunch
15:00 - 19:00 - Beach Tourism Shoot
19:00 - Supper / evening out

Cost: We are hoping to have 8 models - 4 models for each shoot.  Each model will be paid 100 Euro.  If there are 4 shooters for each shoot your cost will be 200 Euro.  If you only want to shoot for one shoot, then you only pay for that shoot (ie 100 Euro if we have 4 shooters).  If we only end up with 2 models then the costs of 200 Euro will be split between the shooters for that shoot.

The only thing that will cost though is if you shoot - so you should be able to get your money back from image sales.  If you just want to hang out in the evening or assist in the shooting then it will be free, other than what you spend on food / drinks for lunch, supper or in the evening.  Anyone who comes to one of the shoots and doesn't take pictures will be put to work holding reflectors / lights.  We will be happy to have you  there  :) If everyone who comes wants to shoot then we will switch off assisting and shooting.  Or, if you just want to shoot for one of the shoots then just assist for the second shoot, you will only pay for the shoot you actually shot images.

Non-Exclusivity: We will be getting releases from all the models at the shoot so they can be used for stock.  To make the shoot as open to everyone as possible, the images will be free for you to upload to any agency - the only problem this creates is for istock photographers who might not be able to upload the very similar images they take as exclusive content.  I'll let the exclusives decide how to deal with that themselves, but know if you are exclusive and want to upload images from this shoot to istock, there are going to be other photographers who have very similar images on other stock sites.

Models:  I'll put our confirmed model count here.  Hopefully we can have around a 1:1 model photographer ratio (again depending on the number of us who shoot), but at a 1:1 ratio we can group up and get 4 models in a shoot with 2 people assisting and 2 shooting or something....

Model Update - 5 confirmed and counting.

Can't make it but I was in Cannes about that time last year. Plenty of great old buildings for backdrops. Also there is a park between the marina and the beach which should provide plenty of open shade.

Oh, yeah, you could have some fun with this carousel.

Will appreciate if you share your experience/learnings about that shoot after it will be completed. I can't join you but I will be in that area in the summer...

The site http://en.book.fr seems to be helpful for French models (though I didn't use it myself).

Opla

Hmm, tempting.
I think I'll be there.
How will you be traveling?
Watch out where the huskies go...

michealo

Do photographers all shoot at once or take turns?

leaf

it depends on how many people we have, but if we have 4 in a group for example with 4 models.  2 people could shoot and 2 could assist, then they could switch off.  With the iStockalypse I was at, the people were all shooting at different angles and different lenses so even if they were shooting the same subject their images turned out quite different.  Or else we could have smaller groups so there is only 3 people/group and 1 shooter and 2 assistants.  That would mean less shooting for everyone but perhaps more original pictures.

Awesome tip Mikhail, thanks!

Just noticed the GTG is on tuesday while the 'lypse ends on sunday, any particular reason for that?

I don't think exclusives will get in trouble as iStock lets non-exclusives participate in their shoots.

For anyone traveling from Holland: Transavia flies directly to Nice from Amsterdam or Rotterdam fairly cheap.

As we have the same camera! and lenses!! the risk of similars is quite high :-)
I think splitting the time works better, and it ensures the models are looking at the right camera

Yes, to put some space between the late night parties of the weekend and the shoot.  It'll also be easier if we end up shooting in Nice instead of Cannes or need preparation.  The fact that it extends our stay in this beautiful part of the world may also have been a factor.  The date is not locked in, so feel free to make a case to have it on the Monday.

It's more a matter of having exclusive contributors upload photos that are similar (same shoot) to photos that other photographers upload to other agencies. That defeats the purpose of exclusivity, so it's not cool with iStock.  If iStock exclusives want to participate in this shoot they're as welcome as anyone else, but they need to be aware of this issue.

Opla

I booked the flight today, so let's keep it on the 27th. Cannes is best for me I think, going to book the hotel soon.
Got my crown today, so I'll find out one way or the other about the exclusive issue ;)

most istockalypses are closed to non-eclusives.  The one in Malta and this one in Cannes is an exception.  But even though anyone can participate, the image taken at the istock event have to be uploaded to istock ONLY, which is why it isn't a problem having exclusive and non-exclusives shooting the same shoot.

Are you guys buying tickets to the awards ceremony as well or just the photographers program?

I like this sort of gathering.

A crowd of microstock photographers showing off their Canon Rebels on the sea shores trying to steal each other's "secret sauce" and calling themselves superPros.

I bought for both. The awards ceremony is Black Tie, but given it's Cannes I'm sure tux' rental is not an issue.

Opla

I only got the photographers program.
It's the black tie thing that put me off.

We aspire to have Canon rebels, we just have point & shoots so far and secret sauce is far tastier than sour grapes.

@Leaf - I don't have a closing ceremony ticket, just the event ticket

I was thinking just the photographers program. Not a big fan of ceremonies really.

jovannig

I hope I can make it.
I'd prefer to shoot on Monday, for work issues...
I can't stay so many days!

Ciao Giovanni

Ok, sounds good.  I have my hotel and event ticket booked (I didn't get a confirmation from SWPA though??) .. I just booked to the event as well - no awards ceremony for me

So are you taking part in the shoot michaelo?

Anyone going that needs some accommodation?

I've booked an apartment here:
http://www.expedia.co.uk/pub/agent.dll/qscr=dspv/nojs=1/htid=2204249
(described as: One Bedroom for 4: One double and two twin beds. Balcony. Kitchen. Television. telephone. Tea and coffee facilities. )

At the moment there are 2 beds free from 21st-24th, and one free 24th to the 29th. Cost would be  US$15-$30 a night each depending on how many end up staying.

Its a little way out of the center (3km), but close to the beach and apparently there are buses into the center every 15mins...

So... any takers??
