I activated the Symbiostock theme in WP and now I have nothing but a white screen for a website! what?? I can't even get into my dashboard to activate another them because nothing shows up! I removed the Symbiostock folder from my themes folder hoping it would revert to a default WP theme but it made no difference. I still have that white screen. How do I fix this?

Kerioak~Christine

I only ever had that when I tried editing a php file and mucked it up.  First time I deleted Wordpress from my cPanel then reinstalled it, second time I had two windows open so could get in that way.   Never heard of simply installing Symbiostock causing this problem maybe the upload got corrupted.

Things I would try (I do trial and error, not technical.
Shut down browser and reopen and hope it works
Go to cPanel and if brand new installation of WP delete and reinstall
If existing version with previous data (early versions of Symbiostock needed a clean version of Wordpress, do not know if that is still the case) then go to cPanel or somewhere on the hosting side of the website and do a backup, hopefully they provide one

I was hoping to get around it without having to do a re-install. I don't want to try again if the problem is going to keep happening. I'm using the latest version of WP and it's a clean version as far as I know.

who is your host (that might help the more technically minded people) and where is your site, will see if I can see anything obvious which might help  before they turn up ?

Ron

I had the same problem when fiddling with php files and a back up restore fixed it. But a normal install and not touch php shouldnt cause a white screen. But if you google white screen wordpress you will find a lot of hits talking about it.

I had this happen here is what Leo had me do

1. You log into your cpanel or FTP and delete the theme folder. Replace it with the last theme that worked for you.

You then need to disable all plugins and reinstall the newest version of the theme.
Then one by one activate the plugins.

This worked for me and I have not had any problems since

Your install of WP is probably ok. As already mentioned, activate the Twenty Eleven theme, which will automatically deactivate the SY theme. Then delete the SY theme. Then reinstall.

Once you get the white screen on everything, to fix it without a reinstall you need to get into the database. Most hosting setups have phpMyAdmin for this.

1. Fire up phpMyAdmin and select your database

2. Browse the wp_options table and find the option_name 'template' and 'stylesheet' rows which will have values symbiostock or symbiostock-child

3. Edit these both to twentytwelve

4. You should now be able to get back into your site. Delete and reinstall the symbiostock theme.

This is a popular pastime when tweaking Wordpress themes...

I did that... deleted the symbiostock themes folder. the other themes are still in the themes folder so do I still need to replace them? Also I do I disable plugins and reinstall the theme when I can't get to my dashboard?

I can't activate or deactivate anything because I can't get into my dashboard.... the screen is white... all white... nothing else.

neither 'template' nor 'stylesheet' appear in that table, could I create them somehow?

Kerioak~Christine

My guess would be that the problem is your host.  A free hosting service with only 10Gb of space and 100 Gb of bandwidth is not going to get you very far.

Try using one of the recommended hosts

Ok, I did find them eventually and did as you suggested and it worked!! Yay! Thank you! You're a life saver  :)
Any idea why the problem occurred though? Could it be a server issue?

Thanks Tinny,

I'll look into it :)

I have same problem on my local testing host. I've tried all advice from this thread and nothing worked.
I am not going to re-install my WP or the theme again and again as it is of no use.
What I have noticed is that when I'm trying to see the theme with 'Live Preview' it is going to /wp-admin/customize.php?theme=symbiostock link with the same white screen as a result.
I have also defined WP memory limit to 128M and still with no change.
In debug mode I'm getting this message:
Fatal error: Call-time pass-by-reference has been removed in /var/www/mysite/wp-content/themes/symbiostock/inc/classes/network-manager/network-manager.php on line 1645

Sorry for my English  :-[
Thus I have done: go to the C-Panel and rename the Plugin folder in Plugin-Temp. Then provide a new Plugin folder. The white screen is away and you can log in.
Now move the plugins of the "-temp" folder one after the other in the empty, new Plugin folder and kontroll whether all OK is. It takes 5 min ::) Delate the "-temp" folder.

If you have tried this, i apologize. You might try toggling the theme off and on again a second time...i think i remember reading this as a solution.

It's a bit hard to tell what could be happening without knowing much about your local testing setup, a little Googling looks like that error may have to do with the PHP version being used.  Can you check that for us?

Also, just curious did you activate the network?  I'm not certain if that would cause errors on a local environment depending on the set up.  I took a look at the line it's referencing and I don't see an obvious cause for the error but I'll send AJT a note to double check since it looks like it's in his network search function.

I am on newest LAMP server at Ubuntu 13.04
WordPress Version:      3.5.2
PHP Version:            5.4.9-4ubuntu2.1
MySQL Version:          5.5.31-0ubuntu0.13.04.1
Web Server:             Apache/2.2.22 (Ubuntu)
and as it is on my home computer, which is connected to internet through the local cable provider, I have no network activated.
I have tried deleting and installing theme a few timed and it still pointing to network-manager.php as causing problem.

Yes, that '&' is my fault and it will be fixed. It should not be there (I've put & in function call instead of header). But I think that it has nothing common with blank screen. This & is reported as a bug in debug mode (as it was) or sometimes as a warning only in rare php versions, but maybe...

I've sent you PM with link to theme with & bug fixed.
Try it and let me know if it works.

I am just checking in quickly - let me know if you've solved this.
