RAW will soon need a different GPU

A bit off topic but have yet to see an answer elsewhere.
It seems my laptop will soon not be able to use RAW - or parts of it. I did manage to get a message that my GPU was partly compatible or something - but despite updating it (again) it now just says accelerated GPU has been disabled - again.
So how do I stop Adobe updating Raw and/or CC automatically and effecting stopping me processing photos in PS please? A new computer is not really what I want to hear. And neither is 'use Affinity'. :(

Perhaps reach out to Adobe? Or mat here - and see if he can pass the feedback onto the devs?

PZF

That's rather what I was hoping - that Mat might have something to say on the matter. :(

So is the claim that you will not be able to process RAW or you will be able to but it will be slower because it won't use the GPU?

Just upgrade your GPU and you will be happier than before.
Especially if you also do video.

You can find good deals on ebay. I just bought a 3080Ti, but you can buy a 1080Ti for less than $200.

Edit. Sorry, I just realised that you have a laptop. Different story.  Desktops are much easier to upgrade.

If your GPU is very old, it might not be compatible with PS.

I had that problem with my laptop, but I found a way to force PS to use it anyway.

You can try to making a .txt file called PSUserConfig.txt, containing the following:

# Force GPU On
GPUForce 1

And save it in [Installation Drive]:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\[Photoshop_version]\[Photoshop_version]Settings\

Not THAT old I don't think and I made sure I got 16mb (?) rather than 8. It's been fine till now and all this AI, I imagine.
But will keep this message in the hope that a tekkie can help me do it.
Thanks! :)

PZF, what is your laptop configuration?

PCDMedia

Check for a GPU manfufactuer's firmware update.  Might help.

PZF

Not sure what you mean by configuration here - Windows 10?
I've downloaded the latest driver from Nvidia too.

What processor? What video card, motherboard, hard drive, GPU?

PZF

Well, in case it is helpful, which I doubt, I see

Intel(R) Core (TM) i7 7700HQ cpu @2.8GHz 2.81 GHz
16 GB RAM
64 bit x64 based processor

Motherboard? Whatever this laptop came with.
Would it make a difference to anything if I knew this?

I am surprised that I would need to know the detailed inner workings of my computer.
I don't know how my car engine works, either, but I can still drive the vehicle. If some clever mechanic tweaked something that rendered it undrive-able I'd expect that person to help me fix it.

Adobe, where are you???

PZF

Thanks. That could at least be a starting point and alternative to a new computer! Appreciated.

Well just got the message that I need to enable GP acceleration but GPU is not compatible. Feel I might be going down a rabbit hole to get this sorted.

Any other alternative editing programs anyone can recommend?
