My photo used in a commercial YouTube video. How to get it checked or removed?

I recently discovered that one of my Shutterstock images is being used in a commercialized YouTube video. I'm trying to figure out the best way to handle this and would really appreciate your experience and advice.

My concern is whether the YouTube creator licensed the image at all. I'd be interested to hear how others verified this and whether you went through Shutterstock, YouTube, or both.

I have taken down a channel in the past where they clearly used stollen content (videos, animations, including mine, etc) and were offered for free. After the ban he did approach me by email but of course I ignored that since it was a clear steal. In your case - keep in mind that there are thousands of people in good standing that do have subscriptions somewhere and pay for the images/videos they use. Its a delicate situation. I would say dig deeper if you are concerned and see if that person offers any of that for free/profit anywhere (I mean the visuals they use) - that is a red flag.

Did you try to submit a DMCA report?
I didn't try it on Youtube, but it always worked for me on other platforms (Instagram, Pinterest, Etsy, etc).
If they have a license, they will most likely appeal to get the removal decision overturned (although, in rare cases, some experienced infringers may do that even if they don't have it).

Is it not the entire point of selling pictures for them to be used?
Or was it an editorial picture used in commercial context?

Do you mean I have to submit it myself without involving Shutterstock?

Yes.
Google "Youtube DMCA" (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) and you will land on a page where you will be asked to fill a form with details about that potential copyright infringement.

What about just contacting the channel owner first asking if they have a license for that image?

I did that initially.
But, each time I looked, I found my photos stolen by many dozens of channels on each platform.
It would have been a big waste of my time to be cordial with all those thieves.
The platform's reaction is rather effective and takes less than 24 hours remove the infringing content, after a report.

In fact, I even began working with a company specialized in identifying these thieves, and make them pay.
