September is nearly upon us which means gracefully brace yourself for the next latest and greatest brain fart that iStock will be bestowing upon us to lower our already terrible DPD average down to a whole nother level of the new new.

Any predictions for this forthcoming manmade disaster?

Given that each announcement is worse than the last I reached the limits of my imagination several announcements back.

And drops everyone to a straight 20%

I feel a dose of the word "Unsustainable" coming on. Perhaps followed by something like "It's not about the money". Then a mention of lens caps.

iS drops exclusivity.

Even though that wouldn't affect me directly, if this happens, countless new indies will appear on the other sites, further diluting our sales there.

20% would be an improvement for me :)

You meant 15%, right?

What would be positive:

- get rid of the RC system and replace it with lifetime earnings, including all earnings from getty,pp,subs etc...

- offer the third path of exclusive images, like adobe does

- reestablish the old public lightbox system and encourage people to "collect" files across their favorite theme and post these galleries to social media and sharing. Think of an intelligent system to reward those that do this and drive sales and traffic to istock. Use the crowd intelligently to curate millions of files. Discover and promote the editing talents in the community.

- make istock work smoothly and speed it up to be competitive

- give artists a good app for direct uploads from mobile phones, look at how great the fotolia app is.

- offer industry standard rates for video, especially 4k

- a new CEO that knows how to communicate online and can draw people in (buyers and producers) and attract a loyal following

- bring in a social media manager who leads by example with visible experience.

If a single artist like Thomas Hawk can have over 7 million followers, then the social media manager of a company like getty and istock should have a much, much larger following. Dont allow amateurs to run your campaign, bring in professionals who can show from their own blogs or following that they know how to lead.

etc...

What they will do?

something abrupt and aggressive and very unlogical,

untested, so the site breaks down and people cant buy files in the most important buying season

and many "exciting" announcements that will lower our income...

At least this has been their routine for several years now...I dont see an indication that they will break their pattern, sadly...for some reason I dont understand they love drama.

Whatever they do, the biggest benefit will go to SS and adobe, like in all the other years...

The reality is that it is NEVER good news for the indy. It may be a small uptick in some way to appease exclusives, but it will NOT (please mark my words) be positive for the indy. Why? Positive means more revenue through better commissions. The old 'go-to adage' that you will get more revenue from more downloads is ALWAYS BULLSH!T.  So the only positive thing that can come is better commission structure. With Getty/Istock leveraged so much, is it really feasible that anything positive can come from this impending announcement?, for indy's at least? No. Because revenue is so important to Getty, and they've proven it through all of the cut-throat moves they've made in the past, I simply cannot see them doing away with the RC system. If they do it will be reinstated but with a lower commission model, so it "APPEARS" as an advantage until it gets dissected here to expose the real effect on contributors.

Of course there is never good news for independents because agencies are going to compete on price when they are trying to sell the exact same thing.  When SS was the cheapest place everywhere else had to adjust to match them, now Adobe is cheaper so everywhere is going to have to adjust to match that.  Expect that all the sites are going to have exciting announcements in September or soon after.  It sure seems like Shutterstock will have to do something soon.

I've never understood why the agencies don't consider this kind of editing a priority - every buyer I talk to values their time more than any savings they can make by shopping around.

Finding the image you want in the libraries of tens of millions of images that the agencies feel they have to accumulate is going to be the biggest problem from now on.

They should make micro payments to crowd-sourced editors for creating useful collections that buyers use.

Not disputing anything you said, Ticktock. But it's the advertised "big announcement" that I am specifically referring to.  Big=bad. Never good. An announcement (maybe from any agency) should read, "Horrible announcement for contributors coming in September". Just be honest for crying out loud.

I didn't see that there was a "big announcement" advertised.  Where do you see that?

I did see it but don't recall where. Going to try to find it. They definitely said that they had some announcements coming this fall, but that was before my Hawaii shoot in June.

Ok let us know when you find that quote.  I don't recall anyone saying there would be a "big announcement" or seeing that advertised anywhere.

You mean this:  "It's definitely not the right thread. We will have something on the state of RC targets and the like closer to September." from Lobo?

There is definitely nothing there that says "big announcement", quote unquote, as in said by someone.   It honestly bothers me a lot when I see things quoted that weren't actually said, one member on here has done that with things I've posted, changing what I wrote and putting quotes around it.  It's at best extremely misleading.  There is a very different meaning from that post and saying "We have a big announcement coming" don't you think.

Not that I care, but I imagine anything to do with the "state of RC targets and the like" to be pretty important to most people.

that is the vain hope it would be good things, they screwed istock within two years, look at istock ranking graph, it is very tragical, constantly down, down, down from 450 to 1050 in recent year, this mean roughly, the number of visitors decreased by more than twice, really tragic... It is easy to loss something but it is very difficult to recover.

Yeah that's true but they've had that announcement the last few years that nothing is changing you won't go down from where you are.  So it's not necessarily a big announcement.

I don't know if one can assume that is the content of the announcement this year.

thats really true, I've lost 1000 bucks already so what is the meaning of gaining a little 1-2 bucks?

I'm not, I think there will be a change this year.  Still when you put something in quotes you are saying iStock said there will be a "big announcement" when nobody actually said that.

You mean when you went nonexclusive?  I'm sure you'll make it up at your other sites.
