OK, take two.

Wishing everyone a very happy, loving and safe holiday season, and a New Year full of successful and fulfilling beginnings.

@Thijs I love hearing about other countries.

@Pacesetter I hope your Sydney move went well.

@svh I dont think its the C word thats the problem, I think its the V word. Perhaps just let everyone have their own thoughts and opinions about it. To each their own.

@Martha come back :-)

@Leaf Please dont take this thread down.

I love hearing about how Christmas is celebrated around the world. As far as stock is concerned, I think its very relevant and something that agencies often ask for. Christmas during a pandemic is also very topical and something on everyone's minds. It should be documented by none other than stock photographers. Also, when something is concerning you, it helps to discuss it and even just to put it on paper.

Here in Australia, its hit us hard. Sydney is having 3,000 new cases a day, and here in my Capital city, we've gone from having zero cases a month ago to a few hundred new cases a day. This is troubling and on everyone's minds.

Thijs, I am sorry to hear about your family. I hope everyone is safe and recovering. Its going to be Christmas by Zoom, for our extended family. I will be cooking a turkey breast with all the trimmings just for my husband and I, and then Zoom to watch our little nephews open their presents.

Goodwill to everyone.

Love,
Annie

Thanks Martha and Thijs ! Merry Christmas Wilm.

So what is everyone cooking/eating for Christmas? For those who dont know me, I'm a chef's daughter and love cooking and sharing recipes.

And before anyone complains that this is not stock related, I will add that Christmas food around the world is a great festive subject. You can even shoot this year's dinner or meal prep, and upload later for next year. Christmas tends to sell all year round anyway. My suggestion is to set up an area beforehand and have all your equipment there ready for a quick shoot before it goes on to the table. Do all your lighting and testing beforehand.  If you don't have indoor lights then use natural light. Push a small table up against a window or door.  Or even place a tablecloth on the floor and shoot as a top-down flatlay. Or even photograph everyone eating and celebrating at the table. If you can get up really high and shoot that top down, then that would be great too. I can just imagine your guests: Whats that big ladder by the table for?????   (And don't forget your copy space!! LOL)

OK, so that's the stock side out of the way, what's everyone eating?

We tend to follow the traditional English roast turkey with desserts like plum puddings. But when the weather is too hot, a lot of people have things like seafood and salads. Or BBQs outdoors. I make an ice cream plum pudding (or some sort of ice cream cake) for dessert.

Martha, I suppose because you have turkey for Thanksgiving, Americans dont tend to have that again for Christmas? And Thijs, Wilm and others - what do Europeans have?

Hi again, Annie!

Around here, Thanksgiving always features turkey, while Christmas dinner tends to be unique to the family and the cook. Often it's ham or beef, especially something fancy like Beef Wellington.

Annie,

I have to smile a little. Do you know Asterix & Obelix? There's a short dialogue when the two of them are on their way to England in a boat together with Asterix's cousin.

"Do you often have fog like this here?"
"My goodness, no, only when it's not raining!"

There is always a grain of truth in every humorous stereotypical statement.

It's much the same here in winter. At 9am it starts to get "light" (if it's not cloudy, because then we have only twilight all day) and by 4pm it's dark again. It's raining or, as is currently the case, it's freezing cold. One would freeze in the grass at the BBQ, so this alternative does not offer itself here. You would have to cut your beer out of the ice block and suck it as ice cubes....  ;D

We have raclette. The whole table is full of bowls. Very finely sliced beef tenderloin, pork tenderloin, chicken breast tenderloin, bacon, corn, green onions, herb butter, peppers, champignons, potatoes, raclette cheese, marinated prawns (with olive oil, garlic, honey, cognac, a few dashes of Worcester sauce, thyme, rosemary, salt, pepper). Served with water and Chilean "Montes" Cabernet Sauvignon - no Rosemount Estate this time ;-). This usually lasts a couple of hours. Yummy!

On the second day we have crispy baked duck in orange sauce with almond croquettes and red cabbage. As an appetizer there are slices of white bread fried in garlic butter, topped with blanched red cabbage, small orange slices and freshly shaved Parmegiano reggiano.

My daughter will make a tofu dish to go with it instead of the meat because she is vegetarian.

For dessert there is stratiatella and caramel ice cream with amaretto.

Enjoy the Christmas holidays! All the best for you too!

Making a turkey on the kettle grill, at least starting it on the grill for the flavor. I shot that last year and it has sold in small numbers. Champagne, shrimp dip (top secret Mom's family recipe) Pumpkin pie, stuffing, some kind of inspired vegetable, like steamed squash? Just the two of us, which is just dandy. Packers play in the afternoon, while I'm cooking. Basic and simple... probably a fire in the pellet stove for a cozy evening.

Holiday Shrimp Spread  for Crackers

1/2 pound shrimp - fine chopped

1 t fine minced onion or scallions
1 t minced celery
1 t minced green pepper
1 t chopped parsley
1/2 t grated lemon rind or
1 t lemon juice (or both)
1/4 t salt
1/4 t ground pepper
1 dash of Tabasco

1/4 C  Hellmann’s Real Mayonnaise

Let sit overnight in a covered crock in the refrigerator.

Soda crackers are best

Hi Ralf,

I suspect you got confused by the "sauvignon" and were thinking of a sauvignon blanc. It is a red wine - the Montes Cabernet Sauvignon. Certainly not a Mouton or Petrus, but it has a very good price-quality ratio.

I wish you a nice Christmas with delicious food too!

Oh, wow! Look at all the wonderful food ideas. Yum !

Martha, Beef Wellington sounds fantastic.

Wilm, I have heard of raclette before but thank you for your mouth-watering description. I would love to photograph something like that. Would make a great flatlay. And yes - the Rosemount wine! I forgot. We were supposed to 'share' that when I reached 100k DLs on SS this year. I was so busy and distracted at the time that I never posted it to SS forum.

Of course, Rosemount Estates is here in my home state, but Wilm - because our winery industry here is one of our big exports, I am always interested to hear how much you would pay for a bottle of that wine overseas?

Pete - thanks for the shrimp recipe!! Yum. We would call them prawns here - and do you remember the old Australian 'put a shrimp on the barbie' tourism ads with Paul Hogan??

Hello Annie,

the Rosemount Estate Shiraz is about $8 here, the Cabernet Sauvignon is $9.

But for you to just hide the 100,000 downloads is outrageous! You can't be that busy that you forget to post that!  :P

Congratulations on this well-deserved milestone! Super!  :)

You are cordially invited for raclette. And of course, feel free to take pictures. The tabletop is brand new and makes a very nice background. And: It's not far. Only 12,000 kilometers! We have a guest room for you... :)

That's not bad for the Rosemount. Our most expensive export wine, often bought by collectors, is our Penfolds Grange - starting at around $900 AUD (!!) a bottle. If you ever see that around, please let me know the price if possible?

Yes, you have to check your wine racks. These types of wines are often given as wedding or milestone birthday gifts.

The second most expensive wine we grow here is the Henschke Hill of Grace. I just checked and it starts around $800/bottle. One day I accidently took a bottle of it to a BBQ!! Big mistake!! lol  It must have been given to us at some point as a gift, and I didnt realise it was there. I just grabbed the bottle from the wine rack before rushing out. Oops.

BTW, if anyone IS interested in collecting - the prices I have quoted above for the Grange and the Hill of Grace have gone up about $200/bottle since the last time I checked about 2 or 3 years ago. Not a bad investment.  8)

I have drunk Penfolds more often. But I did not know the Grange yet.

The 2012 bin 95 costs here from $ 1,000 AUD.

The prices are very similar for the Henschke Shiraz. It depends on the vintage, of course.

And, Annie, the prices for the Rosemount I had written yesterday were $US. Sorry, I hadn't paid attention to that at all.

For Real: the 2016 St. Henri I get here for $ 190 AUD.

But is also not my price range...  ;D

Ho! Ho! Ho!!!

Just in case, the idea is chopped shrimp, not mashed. That's the most important part of the recipe, which leads to an attractive little treat. The rest is whatever you want it to be. Sometimes people think cracker spread and associate, a soft paste kind of thing. This is more of the chopped shrimp and minced seasoning kind of idea.

Of course, Rosemount Estates is here in my home state, but Wilm - because our winery industry here is one of our big exports, I am always interested to hear how much you would pay for a bottle of that wine overseas?

Pete - thanks for the shrimp recipe!! Yum. We would call them prawns here - and do you remember the old Australian 'put a shrimp on the barbie' tourism ads with Paul Hogan??

https://youtu.be/95OovSKEtfs (https://youtu.be/95OovSKEtfs)

Hello Annie,

the Rosemount Estate Shiraz is about $8 here, the Cabernet Sauvignon is $9.

But for you to just hide the 100,000 downloads is outrageous! You can't be that busy that you forget to post that!  :P

Congratulations on this well-deserved milestone! Super!  :)

You are cordially invited for raclette. And of course, feel free to take pictures. The tabletop is brand new and makes a very nice background. And: It's not far. Only 12,000 kilometers! We have a guest room for you... :)

Oh, thanks Wilm. Wouldn't that be wonderful if we could share the raclette. Thanks for the offer of the guestroom!!  ;)

That's not bad for the Rosemount. Our most expensive export wine, often bought by collectors, is our Penfolds Grange - starting at around $900 AUD (!!) a bottle. If you ever see that around, please let me know the price if possible?

https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_529926/penfolds-grange-2012 (https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_529926/penfolds-grange-2012)

But is also not my price range...  ;D

We have one bottle of Moet & Chandon Champagne Extra Brut Grand Vintage 2012, then we drop back to Freixenet Brut. The Moet is about 10 times more expensive. Once a year, one good bottle of a recent vintage champagne and it's fun.

Yeah, I reached it 3 months ago, late September. I knew it was coming up and one morning I opened up my SS dashboard and there it was. It had just ticked over to 100,002 or something.

But Sept and Oct were horrendously busy months. I was helping with my husband's accounting business and we were working really long days every day. No breaks. No days off.

But I printed it out and was going to frame it. (Which I still havent got around to doing)

Thankyou Annie, yes the move to Sydney did go well. Was a tiring experience but all very well worth it. Have a lovely Christmas :)

Yeah. A big move!

I've been keeping an eye on those horrendous new cases figures in Sydney. Keep safe.

when we skied in Switzerland or France & went out for raclette we were always told we had to have it with a particular white wine (which they just happened to have) and that otherwise the cheese would form an indigestible ball in the stomach!!

we were going to have wine anyway, so didn't need the upsell

often we'd go skiing the week before xmas & drive home xmas day with all traffic in other direction

if not skiing, for thankx & xmas we'd usually trade dinners w friends - turkey both times but different trimmings

Hello cascoly,

yes, the subject of wine & cheese is tricky.

In Roquefort in France they serve blue cheese with sweet white wine. The more intense, older and saltier the cheese, the sweeter the wine. An incredible combination, even if you don't like blue cheese like me.

White wine is often served with a cheese platter. Usually there is also fruit. Fruit, cheese and white wine is often a difficult combination. It can lead to problems.

I don't know whether white wine or red wine is the better choice though.

What I do know is that the Swiss drink mostly white wine with raclette - and also with cheese fondue. But tea is supposed to be even better than white wine, because it's supposed to be more digestible.

My personal conclusion: the raclette with the red wine was very tasty and is very good to us!  :)

Pete explained to me that Diamond Members are allowed to do this. I already knew that they also approve the first input of new members before it is published (Martha and Zero Talent approved my first answers  ;) ).
I don't know what the rights are to warn or remove someone from the forum.
That seems like a good system to me, but apparently removing a topic is not communicated on some internal site.

And now on to the new year!! Then everyone here eats oliebollen. The oliebollen stall had already been set up in our village. For people who don't know what oliebollen are: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliebol (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliebol)

It is also difficult for administrators. You want to keep a discussion alive, but not turn it into something like twitter.
I could live with the fact that my first New Years wish topic was removed before the discussion got out of hand.
The second time surprised me.
What surprises me too, is that you can't see from each other who removes a topic and can't discuss it with each other (not on the forum of course).

But let's talk about the new year. No fireworks with us this year, which may be set off by private individuals. Fireworks shows continue. Things got out of hand with burning buildings and eye injuries.
Normally you can already hear firecrackers popping at Christmas and now it is wonderfully quiet.

Just for a matter of fact, since I know you're new and you've asked me some questions. In simple terms, this is Tyler's (Leaf) forum and he's the only one who can delete, archive, merge or alter things. Except for, move a topic or approve a new member post? (hopefully I didn't miss something unintentionally?)

There are no secret Admins and there's virtually no ongoing communication between Diamonds behind the scenes. Everyone here is mostly equal, not like super heroes with super powers. Just regular old and young, starving artists.  :)

I thought that other people might have the same questions as you did. We're all pretty much equal visitors here.

Won't be long and it's Happy New Year and there we are, into another season of Create, Upload, Wait for approval, and then watch and wait some more.  ;D

If I don't get motivated to make something new in the next couple days:

Thanks for the info Pete.

The funny thing is however that when my messages and account was deleted there was someone here, that with full conviction, stated that they didn't do it and that I deleted my own messages and account myself. That made me a bit suspicious. Also because I wrote to the forum about this and Tyler only responded there was some mishap but it didn't look like he did it himself.
But let bygones be bygones.

Happy new year to you to :)

Only a couple of hours left here in Germany.
It's the time I dread the most all year, because one of my dogs freaks out because of the fireworks. I hope this year won't be as bad as the sale of fireworks was forbidden in Germany again, just like last year, but people still manage to obtain them from somewhere or mybe have them stocked up. But so far it has been relatively calm, with only a few fireworks here and there. Before the sale was forbidden because of Covid it used to be like a warzone out there all day.

In the Netherlands it is also banned (except fireworks shows of course), because it got worse every year and the hospitals are already full enough.
I've heard enough bangs in military service, but I like a fireworks show. At my parents' house we had a dog, who immediately crawled under the bed with every bang, because fireworks had once been thrown at him.
We celebrate it quietly with the two of us. My wife behind the TV and I behind the computer.  ;D But soon a glass of wine with an oliebol or apple turnover.

Here in the southern Rocky Mountains, we've got 2 1/4 hours more to go before 2022 lands on our doorstep.

I'll watch the "doings" out of New York City 1/4 hour from now and then — like the old lady that I am — hit the sack.

Over the decades, I've partied through many New Year's Eve celebrations, including the very first one that my brand-new husband and I hosted to welcome in 1970. These days, there's no thrill for me in staying up until midnight.

No regrets here about saying goodbye to 2021, but it's hard not to be just a wee bit nervous about what 2022 will bring.

Still… I wish everybody on this forum a happy, healthy, safe, and prosperous 2022!

With 5 days of January done, this has been the slowest start to the new year for two of my major sites: Shutterstock and Adobe.

Granted this is only the third new year I've been in this but even when I had waaaaay less assets on SStock in January 2020, I was still 6 cents in front then than what I am now in 2022.

Having said this, I'm still hopeful as it's very early days and I've been busy uploading these past few weeks.

May I say, and hopefully not offend anyone?

A watched pot never boils.  :)  Which for me means, watching day by day, Microstock earnings, especially in January, isn't going to make anyone very happy. OK it's going to be downright depressing, if you care?

In the past, we've had "what's the worst month of the year" opinion polls, and for most people, it was either January or June. Like everything, it depends on what we create and what we have made and what's in demand, but January isn't the best or favorite month for many people.

From my data over six years, the year looks like a sine wave.  It rises from January to February, starts a long decline to June, then climbs until September and October, then declines again until January.

So I'd say my worst months are typically January and June, and my best September or October.

As you know, my port isn't that big yet and there isn't much to say about the best month yet. Also because photos are still being uploaded. Only now it's extra frustrating for Shutterstock if I don't sell much in January, because I want to get out of those low levels!!!  >:( In that respect, smart (mean!!!) from Shutterstock.
It is addictive to keep checking to see if something has been sold. Two years ago I was happy if there was one photo in one day. Now I am dissatisfied. But gambling addict is worse shall we say.

For Adobe, I can now upload photos for editorial use only. I had forgotten for a while to see if I already had permission for that. Nice, because at the moment there is not much to photograph (too little light and too much rain)

I hadn't sold anything at Alamy for two months. To my surprise, January 1st (when I wasn't expecting anything) I sold a photo for $5. Still, I don't know if I'm going to continue with Alamy. Luckily nothing has been sold in China for a few cents yet.

Adobe is Illustrative Editorial, unless something changed, they don't take News Editorial yet. But yes maybe someone else will notice they have access now as that has opened up to more people over the year. It was silver and now it's anyone with over 100 downloads.  https://helpx.adobe.com/stock/contributor/help/illustrative-editorial-content.html

Right it is frustrating, but it's January?  ;)

Way back, someone created some software that would check every few minutes, to see if there was a sale on any of the sites, and then report back. I can't say for sure, but if you imagine thousands of Microstockers running that app and checking their sites, every few minutes, all day, all night, it could bring the system down? Needless to say, the agencies blocked that software.

But the reason I mentioned it is, sure thing, you wouldn't have to go click through all your agencies, it's automatic. And of course people check and check. That's perfectly natural. Did my latest upload get accepted? Did I make a sale... I try to control my urge to do that, but first thing every morning I look. I mean before I start Thunderbird.

Just like the "are sales reported in real time" because we need to know right now!  ;D

That must have been back a few years ago when many more could still do this for a living, I used to have the SS app on my phone and it was kinda fun to see the sales alerts go off, now I just check every 2-3 days on my PC to see if I made 10 cents or $1.70.   If this was still a viable way to make a living then it wold be fun and more motivating to have instant sales alerts, I remember being out on the road and filming and the alerts would go off and it was a great feeling.

I wrote it wrong Pete. Why didn't they make Dutch a world language? That was much easier for me.   :(

That's what I meant. Everything with recognizable people is still not going. I've put up a few pictures, which have already been accepted.

That photo of the letterbox is doing it on Shutterstock. It was two cards with congratulations for our grandchildren, who received a swimming diploma and we couldn't come because corona had just broken out. Seems like a century ago. But I still made some money from it.

Yeah nit picking, but at least someone reading would get the idea that Adobe does take some Editorial images, if they don't have people in them? SS rejects photos with cars, AS doesn't. Good luck.

I just looked at a list of 100 common Dutch words. I know none of them.  ;) But I do know what a Klompen Clog is, I can't understand how anyone would say they are comfortable. Maybe I should try and see before I prejudge? And I had some Oliebollen for the first time, last Summer, with raisins. Pretty good.

You mean Klompen. I don't have them anymore. On the farm where I grew up, we all had clogs. If the top broke off, my father repaired it with a special iron band, which you could buy for that. My brother-in-law (unfortunately passed away last year) always walked on it, even on birthdays.

We had bought the oliebollen this year. Usually my wife makes them herself.

I get cars accepted as commercial on SS as long as I remove license plate & model names & car isn't the main item - eg winter driving, parked cars, etc.  even police cars & armored cars w only the license plates gone

Yes and others do too, it was a broad generalization of one of the differences. Every agency seems to have their own version of the laws and their rules. The lower we go down the stock agency food chain, the less restrictions there are for what's acceptable and what's editorial. You have mentioned maps before.

SS who knows but last I got was, we no longer accept this kind of material. IS must be before 1900, AS before 1927, DT I don't know how picky they are.

An adaptation of a work in the public domain may have copyright protection on its own as a new version of a work. Adaptations include translations, amended versions and annotated versions. So we can adapt, revise and make transformative works, which are now protected as a new work.

I always thought of Editorial as "it is what it is" News, Educational, 1st amendment rights, until someone came up with Illustrative Editorial. The whole license plates, address numbers and identification seems to be new also. I suspect the license plate part came about because of privacy where people didn't want to be identified as being someplace on a specific date or time. Maybe because there didn't want anyone to know there were there.

Anyway, yes AS does take illustrative editorial for people with over 100 DLs.

Oops, left out the M. So they aren't as terribly uncomfortable as they appear to be? There's a local who makes them and sells at the craft fairs. He's got the augers and chisels and everything old and authentic.

Nice idea that klompen are made in America. They are being used less and less than in the past.

If you were used to clogs, it was not that bad. I scanned all the old family photos from Mother's shoebox.
I think I was about eight (now 72) in this photo. Here I am in clogs, with a whip and a top.

Same here: 2 DLs min cents for me this year on SS but I only have 660 photos on there. Alamy I have over 800 and ziltch sales for many months. I don't know what's going on there but just like SS they cut the royalties by a lot but only for $250 below earners. This makes it even harder for low earning people to get to that amount, Well Alamy was always a bit of an elitist agency.
