General Stock Discussion / Re: If you had six months...
« on: July 30, 2018, 15:03 »
Back 2009, I'd take that 6 months off to produce images. Not so much now.

102
It happens. That's pretty much the only given anymore.

103
The beauty of the microstock model is that contributors bear a huge proportion of the risk...thats why some agencies drift along apparently selling next to nothing...

And that is the barrier to entry to new agencies too. They don't really offer anything because they don't have any clients or business.

104
One look at chart on the right and the earnings ratings tells me this is a challenging market to enter to put it mildly ....a slightly polished version of what's already there is not going to cut it. it would need to be a radical departure.

It might be easier to just salary the artists you want and create a full ad agency/design studio that offers a stock catalog as well. That way you can poach the best talent, have a curated collection that fits your market. It does put you on the hook though to create enough business and clients to actually pay your artists and make a profit.

105
...But to get exclusive contributors youd have to offer them a pretty good deal :)

As always, I can easily be bought. The phone lines are open. :D

106
Average contributor royalties for images have held steady at $1 for a while. That may have worked well in the past when larger volumes were easier to obtain, but not so much now. I've thought for a while that average royalty should be in $5 to $10 range to maintain a lot healthier and profitable model for contributors. Selling images for $20 and receiving $10 (or 50%) would be great. There's not much chance of that happening as long as subscription services dominate the landscape.

What do you get per download on a 4k video? I can't imagine splitting 25 cents of a subscription sale 50/50. Might as well push a boulder up a mountain for all eternity.

I'm with the vector illustrators and would be very glad to have my giveaway (I qualify for it, yay!) for Adobe Illustrator - sadly Photoshop it's not really useful for me in itself. It's nice news nonetheless, but would be truly great news for us to be able to use it for what we need and work with. Is there any chance to have this changed in the future? :)

Thanks Mat!

I guess you can get a single app subscription for $20.99. That mixed with Photoshop and Lightroom would cover most of my needs and save about $32 a month. I guess if you are doing a lot of side work in InDesign or other programs then maybe not. I'll have to weigh it all out.

Well, that's all assuming that you can run 2 plans at once Photo Plan and Single App plan. If not, then back to square one.

I have confirmed that yes, you can have both a CCP subscription and a single app Illustrator subscription running at the same time with the same Adobe ID.

Cool. Thanks.

LOL. No love for the Illustrators.

Not true! We definitely love illustrators! I understand you are referring to Adobe Illustrator specifically but it's important to note your vector uploads and earnings from vectors do count towards the CCP giveaway.

-Mat

Will the credits for the photography plan go towards a full CC version that I'm already paying for? Like others have said the photo version isn't a ton of use by itself to me, but a little off my bill is always good.

All the agencies are pretty much all the same. They are an impediment to making a better living, but better than making nothing. Until they are the same as making nothing, then nothing will change.

113
Should the joke be that you need 1000 good images to make that per month, then 10,000 good images a month after that to maintain it?  :o

114
Sure, if better people (of which there are many around the world) upload enough clips in my area, my clips will stop selling. Absolutely.

That's the thing though, it doesn't really matter if it is better. You eventually get drowned in a sea of images and keywords. That guy that shoots 5000 clips of garbage a year might not make much money, but he'll eventually start cutting into your earnings. Maybe not much this year, but they'll be another hundred or thousand people like him next year. I'm not saying this to be bitter, pessimistic or a jerk. It just seems to be the pattern. As an illustrator, I strolled by several photogs that were probably proverbial canaries in the coal mine.

115
I could have uploaded 400 clips of random stuff walking around all day, but most of them would never ever sell, so it would be a giant waste of upload time.

Don't worry. You'll be a commodity soon like the rest of us and it will all be a waste of time. Hooray! :D

116
You can also put in lots of great hard work and go nowhere. Nothing is guaranteed to rise to the top. It just gets thrown into the pile with the rest of the work and either gets noticed or doesn't. That's kind of the system that's been built though.

117
It's been that way for at least a few years. I'm hoping to ride this fiery rocket to the ground and emerge from the ashes. I'm not optimistic about that plan, but we will see.

118
SnapVillage (Corbis) - although its nickname of CrapHamlet (don't know who coined that, but kudos) is almost worth it

Was it Corbis that paid per upload to contribute for a few months? I remember enjoying that little chunk of change.

I think that was the Veer "Dash for cash" or something like that.

That might have been it. I have trouble keeping track of some of these agencies.

There used to be exciting news all the time (price increases, raises, etc.). It's sad that isn't happening anymore and probably a big contributor to it all stagnating or careening towards a ditch.

So what was the good news that was supposed to be announced? Not being sarcastic. I just don't remember seeing what the whole deal was other than new levels.

122
LOL. I have enough ideas to work on until I die. It's just nobody wants to pay for them. :D

123RF / Re: Again late with 1099 this year?
« on: April 16, 2018, 10:10 »
So how much of a fee do they get hit with? The inter-webs say they can charge $50 to $100 per late 1099.

124
Apparently the problem is solved. I'm not producing any stock art any more to have a working environment.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Thinkstock Gone?

I got the email today, and it made me realize that Getty is pretty much a secret bunker that sends me a check every month. I really don't know what's going on or where the money comes from.
